The effective overhaul period of the AL-31F is only 750 hours, less than the 1000 hours often quoted. The PLAAF now has a requirement for 1500 hours; PW and GE engines often go higher than that, 2000 to 4000 hours at least. Only very recently is Salut able to achieve a 1500 hour certification on its engines like last year, just about the same time Liming managed to meet PLAAF certification for the WS-10A.

For export purposes, something called the FD-60 is still being offered, and that’s the export variant of the PL-11. It does appear that the F-8IIM may be compatible to both R-27 and R-73—all the late model J-8s are using the HMS from the Su-27. At least, based on the publicity photo. Probably the J-8F too, at least potentially.
I don’t think the PLAAF invested itself to build a lot of PL-11 stock, since they know it would be superceded by the PL-12 and supplemented by the R-27/R-77. Yet the potential for the J-10 and the J-8F to launch the PL-11 should be there as a prime requirement (the J-10 prototypes are often seen with the PL-11 before 2004). The PL-11 stocks should have been reserved or sent to the J-8B/D units by now.
