I couldnt disagree more with your last comment OLD GIT. In my professional experience it works out at 50-50.

Fair comment, it’s only two seprate incidents of course but I was only refering to my own personal experience. I have done a fair bit of flying in the past 25 years and I have never had a problem with a major carrier. My sister also does a fair bit of flying on low cost airlines and she has also been on aircraft which have had problems but again with her she has never had a problem with a major carrier other than say ATC delays. Having said that, we are only 2 people against the millions that fly so I suppose our perspective becomes a bit distorted.

In Dec 2004, my sister and I flew on a Flybe Q400 from Edi to Southampton (I don’t have my logbook for the reg) but we sat on the taxiway for over 30 minutes at Edi while the port engine was constantly started, stopped and restarted. I even said to my sister that we would probably have to go back to the terminal but we eventually got going. Flying Ryanair Dublin to Bournemouth a few months ago on a B737 we had to taxi back to the terminal with an engine problem. I know all airlines have technical problems but it seems to me that the low cost outfits seem to have more than their fair share.

Does’nt the Qatar Royal Family have the use of a B747 SP usually parked at Bournemouth?

Well done Deano, its a great achievement. I remember the day I failed my medical and was told I would never make a pilot on account of my eyesight. I can only envy you. May all your flying be safe.

Very nice shots indeed. I particularly liked the IL76 and the Tornado. I wished I had been there.

I’d agree to that, CRASH is a five letter word that put dread and a shudder through me everytime i see it.

Well Martin I assume you are referring to my post about the Swordfish. Yes I could have worded the title a little better but if you read the fifth line of the post you will see that I did not have a date or year for that matter and neither was I sure of the aircraft type either. It takes a few seconds to open a post so hopefully you can contain your dread and shudders and I also hope that your hypersensitivity is curable.

Might have been a Barracuda. One that had been abandoned by its crew flew down a street in Arbroath, scraping houses on both sides of the road before coming to rest. The marks on the houses remained visible for many years.

    Best wishes
    Steve P

That sounds like it. The roof of the house where my partner lived had been taken off apparently. Do you have any idea where I can get more info on this at all?
    Thanks

As some useful information has been posted since, I took the liberty to change the thread’s title.

Thank you Frank – the reason I asked for the thread to be deleted is that although I can edit the text, I did not know how to go in and edit the title so I thought the simplest thing to do would be to start again.

Well I think you’ve done very well to be honest. I don’t think it matters which airline it is, under thses circumstances most would be unlikely to offer any refunds. You’d probably have got a transfer to another flight with other airlines, would would still have had to pay a transfer fee, I think even BA and the likes would have taken this view.

I agree, I didn’t expect anything. However there is an article in the Sunday Times travel section which says that an airline is obligated to return the tax element and charges because if you do not travel how can these charges apply. I don’t know if its legally binding. When I get home I will dig it out as I kept the article

Just to update everyone on this I eventually had a response from Ryanair HQ. I had a long e mail screed about how they do not do refunds etc and at the very end they said under the special circumstances they will send an unspecified GBP amount to me. An unspecified amount could of course end up being £2.36 but at least its positive.:o

It’s the hub issue again. From ATL Delta could serve both Florida and the Californian markets, as well as most of the USA. However Los Angeles has limited hub scope for European travellers as you’d have to fly west and then fly back on yourself (leading to long journey times) to access most of the USA. ATL wasn’t the best choice because it missed the important eastern seaboard (New York, Washington, Boston etc etc), but at the time of starting, DL’s hub at JFK was in a level of infantcy, where as ATL was mature and offered more connections. DL have put significant effort into their hub at JFK over the last year, and consequently they can offer many more connections through there.

Of course. The hub issue completely escaped my notice. I was thinking what is there in Atlanta for people to visit. I remember the old joke about Atlanta as a major hub when someone said that if you die and go to Heaven you will have to change planes at Atlanta first to get there. 😀
