I haven’t read all the pages of this thread, but if you check Greece they have some new higher rez scans of some of the airbases which were in very low rez before.

I’m using the free service and fired it up last night after some time.

Here is a picture of Larisa AFB north of the runway, many F-4s to be seen!

Sorry in Greek only.

The Article states of advanced talks on possible sale to Pakistan of two “S” type Frigates from the Hellenic navy!

They will be from the 4 ships that will not be part of the modernisation program, if the sale proceeds the two remaining unmodernised ships will be retained as training ships for the Hellenic Navy.

What helicopters would Pakistan use from these frigates? (to give aviation angle on the news)

If Mirage 2000 is so better than F-16 why Greek ordered more F-16?

The recent order of F-16Cs is to replace the ageing A-7s and non-upgraded F-4Es primarily for Strike roles and CAS. The F-16Cs with the conformal fuel tanks and available weapons is better suited to these roles.

Also don’t forget the Greece also has selected to upgrade it’s Mirage 2000s to dash 5 standard, with acceptance trails currently underway as we speak.

Turkey Finalizes Threat Paper

By BURAK EGE BEKDIL, ANKARA And UMIT ENGINSOY, WASHINGTON

After months of undisclosed deliberations, Ankara has endorsed a national threat paper, a document that shapes Turkey’s defense and procurement doctrines.

A top security official said that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government recently sealed the National Security Policy Document. It “was approved by the Cabinet, as it was suggested by the National Security Council,” the official said.

The National Security Council, Turkey’s top security panel that includes government and military leaders, last year proposed a draft threat paper saying Turkey faced both conventional and asymmetrical threats.

The document, a copy of which was shown to Defense News, lists radical Islam, separatism and extreme left groups as domestic security threats. “Turkey will not give up universal values while fighting these threats,” it says. “Turkey’s territorial integrity will be protected in line with the principles of a democratic, secular and lawful state.”
The paper notes the importance of relations with the United States.

“Building a pro-Turkish public opinion in the United States is important for Turkey’s security,” it says. Turkish-U.S. relations “are of strategic importance; but this should not be perceived as an alternative to Turkey’s EU bid.”

Turkey and the European Union formally opened full membership negotiations in October.

The document warns that Iran and Iraq pose uncertainty and risk for Turkey. “[Iran’s] Shabab missiles are a threat for Turkey,” according to the paper.

“We need a nuclear-free region,” said Army Lt. Gen. Hilmi Akin Zorlu, the General Staff’s chief of plans and policy, during a visit to Washington March 28.

Zorlu also said, “The preservation of Iraq’s political unity and territorial integrity is essential.”

Other excerpts from the document include:

• If Greece extends the territorial waters of its Aegean islands from six to 12 miles, this will be a casus belli, or reason for war.

• The platform for a solution to the Cyprus dispute is the United Nations. The Turkish troops on the island are of vital importance for the security of Turkish Cypriots. The breakaway statelet of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be strengthened and protected until there is a lasting settlement to the Cyprus dispute.
Turkey’s stance on Greece’s territorial waters angered Athens.

Ankara says such a Greek move effectively would make it impossible for Turkish ships to sail from Turkish ports to the Mediterranean Sea through the Aegean without entering Greek waters. But Greek diplomats criticized Turkey’s decision to retain this article in the security document as Ankara seeks EU membership.

“Turkey’s European future lies in its own hands on the application of the European norms and practices, both inside Turkey and in their relationships with the neighbors, particularly Greece and Cyprus,” Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis said March 23 at a joint news conference with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.

Turkey has kept about 30,000 troops on Cyprus since it invaded the Turkish northern third of the island in 1974, in response to a brief Greek Cypriot coup that aimed at annexation with Greece.

Reha Tartici, director of the Istanbul-based research house Consensus, said the new threat document also will affect some of Turkey’s procurement decisions.
“In a way, it will be a guideline for a future shift to smart weaponry instead of conventional arms,” Tartici said. “The newly relaunched satellite program is a good example.”

Turkey’s government had earmarked an initial $138 million for the country’s space program, and asked local and international manufacturers to respond to a request for information. But a procurement official familiar with the program said the eventual cost may exceed $250 million.

any info about when the 4 Type 209/1100 ‘s and the 209/1200 that won’t get upgrade (is it “Poseidon” ?) are going to retire from service?

I think the 4 Type 209/1100’s will start to be retired around 2015, some maybe retained for training purposes.

The Hellenic Navy’s Neptune II Sub program.

S-118 ‘Okeanos’ is the first type 209/1200 sub to under go a Mid Life Modernization and repair under the Neptune 2 program.

It is a large exercise, which consists of cutting the sub and inserting the fuel cell section and then reconnecting the sub again, I believe it takes about 36 months to finish one sub.

Only three of the four type 209/1200 will receive the upgrade, with the third sub coming back online around 2013.

The modernisation work includes:

Replacement of SONAR, RADAR, ESM, with the new ATLAS Integrated Sensor Underwater System – ISUS, measures for noise reduction and sub- Harpoon capability.

The Neptune II Program

The most significant of the upgrades to be performed on the three (3) Type 209 HN Submarines, entails the installation of the new and modern Fuel Cell Section.

The Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) is one of the recent innovations that have captured the attention and won the admiration of the submarine world. After lengthy studies and discussions it is now the accepted wisdom that the fuel cell systems are the ideal solution for air independent propulsion of conventional (i.e. non-nuclear) submarines. The main reason is that they meet the highest demands in terms of ensuring both an extremely efficient energy conversion and the lowest possible signatures.

Repair works on the first of the three (3) type 209 Hellenic Navy Submarines to be modernized started in November 2004.

Pytheas from WCF found this news article from TA NEA (Greek Paper).

His translation follows:

The problem was NATO objections, because they did not want their (IFF?) codes to be passed on to the Russians. The solution found was that the integration would be done by a Greek company called SSA as a trusted go between, who would have the codes of both NATO and Russian systems.

Two successful tests were carried out before Christmas. Although tests will officially carry on till April, the results so far are better than those of the Crotale systems. Link up between Tor and S-300 has not been done yet but it is considered much easier.

http://ta-nea.dolnet.gr/print_article.php?…8430&m=N12&aa=2
(Link is in Greek only sorry)

Some say that the work on the link between the Tor-M1 and the S-300 is well underway and already at testing stage. Maybe a missile shot isn’t too far down the track at the NATO Guided Missile Range NAMFI on Crete near Souda.

Two missing crew members identified
The captain and two members of the Cambodian-flagged freight vessel A AKIF, which sank off the northern Sporades on Tuesday, identified the bodies yesterday of two fellow crew members who had gone missing during the rescue operation. Two men had fallen into the water as the remaining 14 crew members were picked up from an inflatable dinghy in difficult weather conditions. The bodies were found washed up on Myconos on Saturday.

Sadly the two lost members didn’t survive but at lest the families can bury their dead.
Looking at the high rez pictures you can see ice on the Mk29 launcher and on the deck of the Frigate. They didn’t have much of a chance in those temperatures.
