Exercise Morning Wind 2010
The second part of exercise Minoas 2010 that was conducted last May, took part this week at 117th Fighter Wing of the Hellenic Air Force located in Andravida Air Base. More specifficaly in accordance with the military cooperation agreement between the Greek and Israeli goverments, a CSAR Exercise Operation was conducted within Athens F.I.R. from the 11th to the 14th of October. The planning and execution of the LIVEX was conducted by KEAT, HAFs Air Tactics Training Center under the orders of Tactical AIr Force HQ in Larissa and the HAF General Staff, with the direct support of the 117th Fighter Wing.
The benefits of a CSAR exercise are important not only due to the tactical advantages gained from them, but also due to their morale boosting capabilities and the esprit de corps it brings. CSARs purpose is to bring back to base crewmembers that have ejected behind enemy lines, and to do so with speed and maximum safety, using all available resources.
The purpose of the exercise was:
1) Training the personnel of both countries in planning and conducting operations with the participation of fighter aircraft thus augmenting the operational effectiveness of the aircrews in the tactical level.
2) Improving the standarization of the participating units in planning and conducting CSAR operations.
3) Gaining experience in cooperating with Air Forces using a different philosophy by using different assets.
During the exercise familiarization flights, various CSAR scenarios with or without air combat and simulated airfield attacks were flown.
The participating forces were:
Israel
* 3 Saraf Longbow Apaches plus one spare from 113sq “The Hornet
Squadron” based in Ramon AB.* 3 Yanshuf 3s plus one spare, 2 each from 123sq “The Southern Bells
Squadron” based at Hatzerim AB and 124Sq “The Rolling Swords

Also several Israeli Air force Transports and 1 Greek UH-1H were used supporting the IAF detachment and the Greek Apaches respectivelly.
The Exercise took part in North, Western and Central Pelloponese peninsula and in the Ionian Sea, during day and night. Composite Helicopter formations were used, for landings along the flight routes, execution of fighter attacks aagainst the Helicopter formations simulating in the most realistic way various combat scenarios, fighter escorts and package protection, airfiled attacks etc.
Special care was given to Flight Safety both in planning and executing the exercise by using alternate routes and airports and by following all ground safety rules, thus improving in experience and tactical thought. The exercise was a success by acomplishing its objectives and improving the relations between the two Air Forces.
The Israeli Brigadier in command of the Israel Air and Space Force/Zroa HaAvir VeHahalal (Heyl Ha’Avir) detachment spoke very warmly about the high level of cooperation and the smooth way in which the exercise was conducted. He stressed the fact that the men and women under his command were able to train in an unknown for them territory and invited the Hellenic Air Force/Elliniki Polemiki Aeroporia to train in Israel in the near future.
Israeli, Greek helicopters practice strikes over mountainous coasts
DEBKAfile Special Report October 11, 2010, 9:31 AM (GMT+02:00)
Ready for joint long-distance Israeli-Greek maneuver
The Israeli and Greek Air forces embarked Monday, Oct. 11, on a joint four-day exercise code-named Minoas 2010 over Crete and the western Peloponnese Peninsula, debkafile’s military sources report. Both areas are characterized by long coastal strips and high mountain peaks rising as high a 2,400 meters and extending into the surrounding Ionian and Mediterranean Seas. Taking part are 16 Apache and Black Hawk UH-60 assault helicopters – eight Israeli and eight Greek. Over the weekend, the Israeli choppers flew directly from home base to the big Greek Suda air complex on the island of Grete. They were refueled by the Israel air force in flight as part of the exercise.
Minoas 2010 continues the interrupted joint maneuver held in May from the point where Athens broke it off over the Israeli commando raid of the Turkish Marmora before the protest vessel could reach the Gaza Strip to bust the Israeli blockade.
The helicopters are practicing tactics designed for large expanses of water, island groups – the Argo-Saronic Islands east of the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands to its west – and high coastal peaks with deep canyons and gorges. This sort of terrain resembles Persian Gulf shores, including the coastal strips enclosing the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the western and southern shores of Iran where key Revolutionary Guards Corps bases are grouped.
Strategic cooperation between the Israeli and Greek air forces has grown in the last two years, further boosted by the breach in Turkish-Israeli military ties. In April 2008, they conducted a large-scale air maneuver which saw 110 Israel fighters of various types flying directly to the same area as the current helicopter exercise.
Western military experts at the time saw this exercise as demonstrating
Israel long-distance ability to flying fighter-bombers to and from Iran to if it is decided to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Greece cancels military exercises with Israel over flotilla attack
Greece on Monday said that a joint air force exercise with Israel has been cancelled, following an early Monday morning attack on foreign activists by Israelās military.
Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas made the announcement following emergency talks with Israelās ambassador to Athens after at least 10 foreign activists were killed after the Israel navy stormed a flotilla of six ships bound for the Gaza ship with aid.
The flotilla of six boats, containing 10,000 tons of aid had been warned before setting sail for Gaza that it would be denied entry.
Reports said there were more than 40 Greek activists, doctors and journalists sailing on the two Greek ships.
Earlier, Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Grigoris Delavekouras said it was not certain whether there were any Greek casualties.
Greeceās air force had begun joint training exercises with Israel off the southern Mediterranean island of Crete on May 9.
The manoeuvres, codeānamed āMinoas 2010,ā were expected to run until June 3 and consisted of aerial manoeuvres and knowledge exchange involving 10 Israeli Fā16 and Fā15 fighters.
The operation also involved simulated aerial combat, attacks on terrestrial targets, aerial refuelling and search and rescue missions from the air force base of Souda to the Aegean island of Aghios Eftrastio.
Greece and Israel began joint manoeuvres in 1994, although the aim to date had been natural disaster response. Combat equipment was first used in such exercises last June.

GREEK FRIGATE “LIMNOS” DISRUPTS PIRATE GANG
Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG-2) anouncement
News Release
NATO WARSHIP DISRUPTS PIRATE GANG
Ref:SNMG2 2010/09 4 Apr 2010In what was another successful example of international cooperation in the fight against piracy off Somalia, the Greek warship HS Limnos, operating with NATOās counter-piracy operation Ocean Shield, has intercepted and disrupted a pirate gang in the Indian Ocean.
The HS Limnos was cued onto a pirate group deep in the Indian Ocean by an EU Naval Force Swedish maritime patrol aircraft operating out of the Seychelles. After a brief attempt to escape, HS Limnosā helicopter quickly pin pointed the pirates and rounded up the mother skiff and 2 āattackā skiffs. In a desperate attempt to disguise their true purpose the 10 suspected pirates were seen to throw their piracy equipment, including ladders and grappling hooks overboard; they would latter claim to be fisherman.
HS Limnosā Boarding Team then quickly established control over the suspected pirates and their craft. Following a thorough search for evidence, all remaining pirate equipment was disposed of and the attack skiffs destroyed. After ensuring the suspected pirates had sufficient food, water and fuel they were released to return to Somalia in the mother skiff.
HS Limnosā Commanding Officer, Commander Ioannis Partsalidis Hellenic Navy said:
‘Searching for pirate groups in the vastness of the Indian Ocean is a real challenge, even for a capable NATO warship like HS Limnos. The fact that we were able to disrupt these pirates and safeguard innocent shipping is a great success and is one that my Ship’s Company are determined to repeat’.
NATO warships patrol the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean as part of the international effort to counter the piracy that has plagued the region. Despite the vastness of the ocean, counter piracy forces are continuing to successfully disrupt pirate activity and safeguard merchant traffic. Background Information:
HS LIMNOS is part of the NATO Task Force deployed to the region to contribute to the international effort to eradicate piracy off the coast of Somalia. The task force consists of 5 ships from Standing NATO Maritime Group 2. These are:
HMS CHATHAM (Flagship) ā UK
USS COLE ā US
