I had the honour of meeting him at one of our Sqn reunions a few years ago. A nicer, more modest man I have never met. He told be some of the most incredible stories! He was always one of the last to leave the bar also!
A true hero.
Rest in peace Jimmy.
My apologies if I offended anyone with my post earlier. Obviously people are curious about abandoned buildings and the like, and seeking permission from the owners to go and look around and photograph them is great, it puts into the public eye things that we might not normally see.
I only have a problem with people that cause damage to property, such as forcing their way into the 747 or attempting to gain access to the JP. This can only anger the people who look after them. If they googled it, i’m sure it would not be too hard to find out who owns them, most would even be happy to show them around as ritch&max said in his last post.
I apologise for tarring everyone with the same brush, I have no doubt that the 99.9% of people who post on 28dayslater wouldn’t do this kind of thing.
SADSACK, i was refering to the group mentioned in post 3 by john that broke in and forced entry to the 747 mate.
I just had a look on that site.. wonder how many old buildings they ‘explore’ have exposed/damaged asbestos ?
Not sure about that, but i don’t think they would have a leg to stand on if a building they had broken into collapsed on them. I doubt there would be much public sympathy for them either. These morons can call themselves “Urban explorers” or what ever the hell they like but IMHO the simple truth is they are persistant law breakers with zero respect for other people, their property or their land.
Last time i looked criminal damage and breaking and entering were arrestable offences.
Lock em up says I.
Rant over.
Perhaps Tony Martin (Hero in my opinion) should set up a security firm there, that might keep the pikey scumbags away.
I’ve never been to Brunty before and was going to head on over, is there a gate you pay at or do you just park up and amble round? Where should you park? Anyone?
Putting TSR 2 into max reheat………………….
I think I’ll give this a go myself.
Thought tales of her demise may be exaggerated! Well done the RAF – see latest edition of FP for details of the Canberra Gate Guard which has just been repainted, bringin IIRC Marhams gate guards to 3 – Tornado, Canberra and Victor…
TT
TT, you aren’t quite correct. Marham’s Canberra isn’t actually on the gate as the Victor and Tornado are. She is hidden away inside the wire and not visible from outside the Station. She was also looking rather nice basking in the morning sunshine the other day! Got some pictures of her too which I’ll post here is nobody minds the thread creep!

XH673 has recently recieved a well needed wash, the RAF hired cherry pickers to allow access to the parts you can’t normally reach! All of the greeen slime that had built up on her upper surfaces in recent times is gone!
The old girl looks great now, she even glistens in the suns rays! I hope she stays put for years to come!!

Obviously I would like to see 558 take to the sky, I was in a desert when she took to the air a couple of months ago!
If we could go a year without any historic aircraft, (either mil or civil) being scrapped then that would be nice also! (Saying that, XM603 is on borrowed time already!)
Further to the above, I love hearing about aircraft that were saved from this fate by the sheer determination of people who love them so. Such as the Shak cockpit saved down in St Mawgan not so long back. These stories can only inspire others to do the same! Keep posting them!!!
No more base closures.
It’s be nice if the government showed an interest in the Armed Forces too.
That about covers it for me, apart from the obligatory lottery win!
I know some of the above is impossible, but if you don’t have a dream, how are you ever going to have a dream come true!
I wish you all a very hpppy and properous new year.

Nice nostalgic thought that 724 should spend her remaining days at what is left of Binbrook as a reminder too future interested parties of the former stations heyday, but in reality both will fade away if left too the foibles of this line of thinking and the only sure way of ensuring the long term future of the airframe is too move it to a more secure location and provide it with covered storage and better facilities to maintain it.
Sage words, couldn’t have put it better myself.
It’d be a real shame to see one of the four UK lightnings (correct me if I’m wrong please! but there’s 2 with the LPG at brunty, 1 at Cranfield and this one at Binbrook) capable of ground running, continue to be exposed to the type of idiots that call themselves “urban explorers” (who in reality, IMHO are a bunch of common criminals) and any other scumbag that fancies stealing parts. The association that looks after this girl have done a great job keeping her alive up to this point, and they deserve credit for all their efforts. However I do fear if she stays at Binbrook much longer, they will be fighting a much harder battle against a new kind of enemy and with much poorer odds of winning.
Rant over.
There is of course the example of type being tirelessly worked on by mjr and his group down at Gatwick also, hopefully she’ll be number 5, not a replacement number 4!
Jet Provost T3’s XM355 and XM419 at Newcastle College. Currently stored awaiting a new hangar. They will be returned to fully operational condition by September next year.
I was at Newcastle airport back in August recovering a Tonka and saw these two ladies in the hanger next to the Collage, we did wonder about their fate, thanks for answering the question I hadn’t yet asked Lindy’s Lad!
I can see what you mean about waiting for a new Hangar, the one they are in was a state, looks like it could collapse at any moment! We still managed to cram 2 F3’s and a GR4 in with your girls though! Bad week to be a sootie on Tonkas!
Seem to remember that I read somewhere that there were plans to turn the former officers mess into a suite of apartmnents. Makes me sad to drive by the once proud Station every time I go to see the in-laws. Anyone know what the story is with the house that stands on it’s own infront of the former MQ’s? Always fancied her as a fixer upper, something about it just appeals to me!
Outstanding effort! Am currently deployed in a desert otherwise i’d have been there to see it with my own eyes!!
Result.
