…hoping to get off the ground in November.

    Wee story at: http://www.travelbiz.com.au/articles/fb/0c020efb.asp

When you say they where hoping to get off the ground in November, am I right in thinking that this was suppose to be November 2004, as the article was published on 4th June 2004.

Have operations actually commenced or is it still ‘hoping to get off the ground’…?

IMO Heathrow is a fragmented mess from the passengers point of view & London would be much better served by a new properly planned airport. There is enough open countryside around Stansted for a major development without displacing thousands of homes.

Stansted…could easily replace Heathrow as the main London airport.

    Simon.

I dought very much that Heathrow will ever be replaced as the main London airport, especially not by Stansted.

One airport that has not seen much discussion is LGW, I know in my opening post I said I was focusing on LHR and STN, but does anyone think that LGW would be the ideal airport for development?

T1 and T2 being knocked down and rebuilding it over the current after beside Taxiway “Alpha” (aka Rwy 23)

That is it is a basic sense.

In a bit more detail…BAA are due to submit plans in 2007 for the demolition of Terminal 2 and the adjacent Queen’s Building office block, with the new terminal being built on the site and spreading to the east (hence the name Heathrow East :p)!

The new terminal would be capable of handling up to 30 million passengers a year and has been designed to complement Terminal 5. Once complete it will be used by Virgin Atlantic as well as by airlines of the Star Alliance group, including bmi, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.

If permission is granted in 2008, work will begin in 2009 and they are hoping that will be completed in time for the 2012 Olympics.

See pictures below for more details. First one is the birds-eye view of what it could look like after the development is complete, the second is an artists impression of the main entrance.

    Pardon me for asking…

    You are pardoned! 😀

I’ll give you 10 minutes until you get moved on ;).

I was stood at Hatton Cross tube station, in full view of a policewoman, and also quite a few police cars went passed me, and nobody batted an eyelid.

The last time I was there, I even approached a police officer and asked him if it was ok to spot/photograph the planes around the perimeter…he said strictly speaking the answer would be no, however, as long as you are not right up against the perimeter fence with a camera or binoculars, then he couldn’t see it as a problem. He also said that he does not shoo away spotters/photographers (unless they are clearly causing a nuscience or are in breach of the law) mainly because we all just go somewhere else further up or down the road, and it therefore ends up as a cat and mouse affair, they have got better things to do…

I think he meant a good few years ago :).

I did indeed, but I do think that it should be re-opened, but just have better security. I wouldn’t mind even if they began to charge an entry fee (ie £2) in order to get back some of the money used to install the better facilities, that area was perfect for spotting and taking photos! 😀

I can remember, when I used to be at LHR regularly, just using the various Car Park roofs in the centre of the airport to spot from.

Never used to be a problem. 🙁

Which car park roofs are the best for spotting at LHR?

Am learning to drive now, so when I have a car, I may well look to go and see what the view is like.

The spectators gallery on top of the Queens Building has been closed for a long time (at least 3 years now!), it was closed because of security reasons. You are not the only one that misses it…

I haven’t heard of any plans of it being re-opened, and dought that it will in light of the current situation, however, there is the Heathrow Visitor Centre, which offers good views of the 27R runway. Other than that, the only other place I can think of would be Hatton Cross tube station, but not sure if there is any parking for cars avaliable there…

    Hope this helps.

No, they are the complete opposite. They operate niche routes at very high prices and therefore have a wide range of aircraft to efficiently operate their wide range of services.

    Ok. Thanks for that.

From what information you have left Cloud_9 it sounds like your doing a drive/cruise holiday…

Well I am actually doing a air/rail/road/sea holiday all in one!

Fly to Calgary, drive to somewhere (can’t remember off the top of my head!) and pick up the Rocky Mountaineer train to Vancouver, 7/8 day cruise to Alaska (get to go whale watching and glacier walking!) and cruise back to Seattle, spending 2 days there, and then fly back to LHR on BA in World Traveller Plus.

    How cool is that!

…if u want more info, then im only happy to help!

Thanks, any help will be much appreciated. PM me if necessary.

Nice shots grey, who owns/operates the 747 without any markings, and do you know what it was doing there?

This may seem a stupid question, but are Eastern not a low-cost airline? If so, why have they got such a varied range of aircraft? You would think they would choose one type of aircraft!
