Confirmed today…Flybe has sold 25 pairs of take-off and landing slots at Gatwick to easyJet for £20m.
From The Telegraph:
Flybe sells Gatwick slots to easyJet for £20m
The airline has issued five profit warnings since it listed in 2010 and recently embarked on a cost-cutting plan. It has reduced its workforce by 22pc to 2,140, which along with the other steps helped the airline save £30m in costs this year.
Flybe said it had decided to sell following a 102pc increase in slot charges over the past five years by the airport’s owners. Global Infrastructure Partners bought Gatwick for £1.46bn in October 2009.
“It is the view of the board that the increase in charges, combined with the penalistic levels of Air Passenger Duty imposed on UK domestic airlines by successive Governments, have resulted in Flybe’s services to and from Gatwick becoming unsustainable in the long-term,” the company said.

Well all I know is that slot trading is a common practice amongst airlines, it all depends on how lucrative the slots are.
A recent example though, Etihad Airways bought Jet Airways’s x3 pairs of slots at LHR for $70 million back in Feb. 9W still operate on the same routes with their aircraft, and the $70m paid by EY was part of a $220m deal in order to create and strengthen the partnership between the two carriers.
As for LGW, I’m sure the same thing applies however I’m guessing that the slots are not worth as much as at LHR.
The thing which interests me though is that Flybe are having to consider selling slots in order to raise finance…are things really that bad?!
Is it me or does the Bangkok Air livery look a bit too similar to that of Malaysia Airlines on their A380’s?!
The heliport was officially closed on 31 October 2012, and BIH chose to sell the site and it is suppose to have a new supermarket built on it.:(
Thanks for that chornedsnorkack, I looked at the porterplans.com website last night after you provided the link to the other thread and I saw what they are proposing…all sounds very interesting!
Ah ok, my apologises, I didn’t check the boards before I posted.:o
This is most likely to be one of their 787’s as its stuck here because of the grounding of the aircraft. They do move it around occasionally though. 😉
Indeed I have to admit that it does look really nice.
BA will use the aircraft on short-haul routes for training before putting it into service on the Los Angeles and Hong Kong routes in October-November.
Have any details been announced yet as to what short-haul routes the aircraft will be flown on?
Afterthought: Ryanair probably would……
Indeed, I kind of guess that if any airline will follow suit, these will more than likey be the first of the European carriers, plus they’d no doubt use the opportunity to introduce yet another diabolical fee for the privilege…£5 to submit your weight online and £20 to use the scales at the airport, anyone?!:p:diablo:
I haven’t been myself, but as you said if its pictures you want, I would personally look elsewhere.
Another hotel nearby that I would suggest is the Thistle hotel…(see attached map for its location!).
Ok, so its not an ideal spot as it overlooks out towards the start of Runwa 09L, but you do get a good view of T5 (if you like BA aircraft…:D!), and if they have arrivals on 09L you can get some pretty good pictures as they pass over the threshold. If they’re taking-off in the opposite direction (i.e. from 27R), then you can get some decent pictures, especially of the widebodies as they rotate later off the runway.
As per Culpano’s reply, the photos will be backlit most of the day, and you will have to factor in the change in runways at 3pm, however below are a few examples of photos that I’ve managed to get from this particular location.
BA Airbus A320 arriving on 09L:
Emirates Airbus A380 departing on 27R:
The key difference compared to the Renainssse Hotel though is that the Thistle has a viewing area that is outside on the level of one of the restaurants at the hotel, and as far as I am aware it is/was open to the public, not just guests staying at the hotel. That said, it has been quite a while since I last went so this might have changed and would be worth you checking out beforehand.
Tip for car-parking though if you need it…there are a few car-parking spaces located outside of the hotel on the side of the road. You still have to pay using the meters that are dotted about, and make sure that you do otherwise they’ll clamp your car, but it will more than likely work out to be cheaper to do this rather than choosing to park your car in the hotel car park.
Hope this helps.;)
This might help Deano.;)

Last week the EU refused to ratify the reduced budget, and instead asked for more money.
Steven
Whow! Just thought I would emphasise this point as I must be honest that I haven’t seen/read any news about this…
When did this actually happen…? (Before you say it, don’t say “Last week”…!;)), can anyone provide a link to a news story about it?
Wasn’t there a big song and dance in the media made about how Cameron had managed to get a reduced budget through…so what’s changed, why the turnaround?
So we took two massive steps forward, and now taken one giant leap back (again!)…
