I have to admit fulfilling a lifetime ambition in that museum, middle of the afternoon, baking hot with no-one around and Mary Rose just sitting there canopy back and door open. Well it was just crying out for sitting in wasn’t it?

Apologies to any museum staff reading, I just couldn’t resist the temptation. (I didn’t break anything honest. I was really careful :diablo: )

Hey, dont worry about it… they dont mind fulfilling dreams….

    Tim / Ollie…..

Aside from the sales at GJD Services already mentioned/posted, another commercial company who will sell you a cockpit are Everett Aero ( click HERE )

On the menu on the left, click on ‘aircraft’ at the top, then just select from the list whatever type appeals to you.

But in answer to your question, i’m afraid thousands of pounds still doesn’t buy you a complete cockpit. Any ex-service or commercial type is bound to have something missing.

If you want a showpiece, you’ll have to wait until a restored Canberra or Jet Provost etc… comes up for sale privately in Flypasts classifieds, on here, on the ICC website or of course… eBay.

What aircraft are being scrapped at the moment, i guess that makes it easier to aqquire cockpit sections? What cockpits are the easiest to cut your teeth on before moving onto bigger projects?

    Sea Harriers and Jaguars.

Maybe you can ask your parents for the £3000+ your gonna need ?

Is the shack nose section the one from St Mawgan that used to be on the dump?

    Richard,

Yes it is indeed, the asking price is a hefty £1K, but hey its a Shack’ 😀

Nice to see the picture – I didn’t take many in those days much to my regret!

    Dave,

The notes on that photo say it was taken at Cranfield July ’93, and here’s a pic’ of the other side… still at Cranfield but in Sept’94.

I seem to recall that the grey rear end i have is from this aircraft, as someone let me have these photo’s.

    Oh well said DB….! 😀

    Tim,

Yes the area behind a cockpit ~is~ called the rear fuselage, and the photo of mine is already posted.

The actual Chipmunk for disposal is not mine. I am not the vendor, neither will i post photo’s of it here, but i think the problem is you are not fully aware of what a Chipmunk looks like perhaps ?

The cockpit section and rear fuselage are two pieces joined together just behind the canopy.

If you want it to fit your garage, you will either have to forcefully remove approx 4ft from its length ~or~ fit a shorter stubby rear fuselage where someone has already done so.

To sum up….. you will end up with something like this (approx 14ft long)….

rear fuselage.. as in no cockpit?

NO !! As in L@@K at the photo’s already posted (tut).

The Chipmunk for sale is a full (18ft+) fuselage. I haven’t posted photo’s of it, as all & sundry will be aware of which one it is and it may be sold ~before~ you can do anything about it.

But ~you~ said you only had 14ft in the garage, and as i said, i have a spare (shorter) rear end.

Oh well, you can only lead a horse to water i suppose.

14ft would go into my garage!

Or you could have my (already cut) rear fuselage i have in storage for just such an occasion, thus making it approx’ 14ft, for a nominal pile of gold nuggets.

I also have the rear piece from another (see photo). Not sure why, but one idea could be to make it hinge sideways like a Buccanear or Tornado nosecone, to save space.

Sell off the old (complete) rear fuselage as the tailwheel bulkhead could be valueable, or use it as collateral for trades to fit the cockpit out.

While measuring, dont forget to ask the wife and your financial advisor (in most cases, the same person) 😀

Yes a chippie would be ideal. I would cut the tail section away though to leave just the cockpit area.

If you do that (and many have) you have nothing to support the canopy when slid back.

Ideally you’ll need to ‘cut’ it at the end of the central rail before the fin starts, hence you still have approx’ 14 feet to cope with.

Heres Robert Whitton’s ‘PAX up in Scotland….

Of Obi Wan Taylor take heed young Jedi. Speaks wisely he does.

    😀

Indeed, the path to the dark side (2+ tons of Lightning or similar) is strong, especially when the force (said HIAB) has to cope with Canberra as well 😮

LankyTim…. if ‘JetProvost’ turns down the Chipmunk (fuselage of) offer, would you be interested ?

Or how about saving the Shackleton cockpit down in St Austell ? I dont think anybody would wince if you cut it down to floor level and maybe in front of the windscreen for a trailer mounted exhibit ?

I think a guy in the USA was featured in Flypast circa 1997’ish with a similar Privateer cockpit as a travelling B-24 display.

It is fitted to the deHavilland Hornet! How much do you want for it. Would you consider selling?

I’m guessing, but did DC just wet himself like an excited puppy ? :diablo:
