Duxford Sunday 17th August:
A private event at Duxford today marked the unveiling of the B-17 Charitable Trust 2014 Roll Of Honour. Marked on the port side of Sally B’s fuselage are the names of this year’s sponsors and donors, and three flights took place. This support for the last flying B-17 outside the USA means we should see her flying again next year, with the 40th anniversary in March of her arrival at Duxford.
PV202 inbound:
Duxford Wednesday 13th August:
This morning, both of the Mark One Partners Spitfires were moved out and prepared for a photo-shoot. Sadly a problem prevented the sortie, but not before the chance of a few sunlit photos:
An interesting formation passed by (more of this later):
A flyby from a Lakenheath HH-60G:
Duxford Monday 11th August:
Very strong winds this morning suggested a quiet day was in store. However, one of Duxford’s most promising sights meant otherwise:
The return to flight of TFC’s Spitfire FR.XIVe has been eagerly awaited:
Also airborne this morning was based Fennec G-TROY:
Some of today’s visitors:
Finally, one of the eight main wheels has been removed from the B-52D, allowing a closer look at this impressive piece of engineering:
Registered on 8-8-14 was G-FDHB, a reproduction Bristol Scout C.
This project is well advanced, the engine was delivered from New Zealand in June.
It will be on show at the LAA Sywell Rally at the end of this month.
The story of the project is told in great detail on the website at:
The Camel is no longer airworthy. It has a Clerget rotary.
No airshow, but an extremely successful event. It was obvious that a huge amount of work had gone into the occasion, and hopefully a similar show can be arranged during better weather.
The strong winds and frequent rain meant the only flying was 1/3 scale. The Dawn Patrol team made a welcome return to Old Warden in force.
Ground displays included visiting vehicles:
The Brooklands Museum Camel replica was ground-run.
Duxford Saturday 9th August:
There’s been a lot of Spitfire activity at Duxford recently, so it was good to see the HAC Hurricane out and about this afternoon:
The OFMC fleet were also active. Frankie was off to Dunsfold, while MH434 flew Wing-To-Wing for Classic Wings:
Duxford’s three Dragon Rapides:
Some of today’s visitors. A French Army TBM700, Edge 540, RV-8 and RV-8A, Swedish Diamond Star:
Also noted (briefly) was a party of Lancaster hunters…….
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s airshow.
Someone told me there’s a Hurricane coming from the USA just for this event.
Duxford Friday 8th August:
A quick visit this morning found a few warbirds moving around between the rain showers, and Duxford’s newest resident was among them.
Spitfire HF.IXe TD314 (G-CGYJ) was recovered to Canada in 1979 from a South African scrapyard, after serving with the SAAF from 1948-1954, and moved to the UK in 1994. First flight after rebuild was at Biggin Hill on December 7th last year. She was ferried to Duxford on July 17th, for operation on behalf of Aero Legends (who will be offering a Battle Of Britain Experience from Headcorn). There’s lots of information on their website at:
The website also mentions the arrival at Duxford (on July 23rd) of Aero Legends next Spitfire, NH341 (GCICK) which will be rebuilt as a Tr.9 (but understood to be a long-term project).
TD314 is painted to reflect her service with 234 Sqn from Bentwaters in the immediate post-war months. The motto translates as ‘We spit fire and death’
