Can’t wait to know at last HOW MANY 12 OR 16 ???? The sub seems quite large and It would easily accomodate 16 SLBMs,when at last will we know ?
And they plan to build eight through 2017,that will make a grand total of between 124 and 12 “Bulavas”.

When Ivanov said about 69 missiles ,he was referring to the mobile RS12M2 version of the Topol-M, we still don’t know how many silo-based ICBMs they plan to procure, probably 63 by 2015 considering there are 108 silos in Tatischevo and there are already 45 on duty, and it seems in line with the procurement plan of 2007, 3 Bulavas for testing 6 silo based Topol-Ms and 8 mobile ones, you can do the count yourself and it gives us a total of 72 mobile launchers by 2015 and 108 silo based ,thus a total of 180 missiles.

There are 19 operationnal and yes, they are being modernized with the installation of new electronic components and a new suitcase sized CPU (the basic version was as big as a wardrobe ),it’ll make it a very good tool at the disposal of the AF.

They had to get rid of these old missiles because these missiles are not NMD proof and the Russians aim to have an entirely high-tech missile force by 2015(and they are right) and I don’t really see any problem for the Topol to carry six warheads its throw weight is superior to that of the Bulava and the difference in diameter is very very small and also some Russians claim that the Topol is simply going to see its “head” modified and unified with that of the Bulava( Solomonov said it himself) So we’re probably going to see a missile with a slightly larger third stage,it’s technically possible.

Russia will announce changes in its strategic nuclear capability by the end of the year, said Yury Solomonov,

This clarifies everything, they are probably going to announce an increase in procurment it’s sure already this year they are going to produce at least TEN road-mobile Topol-Ms (Solomonov said that the first regiment will be put on duty this year)
thanks Star49 and Rokossowski do you really want the Russian people to starve and suffer again for “prestige” ?Why have 40 000 strategic nuclear warheads which cost Billions of bucks when 2000 is sufficient to deter anyone ?

Yes this press conference was really groundbreaking and we have confirmation now that the Topol-M will carry the same “head” as the Bulava (with six “city killer” warheads) but still I wonder how do they plan to achieve their goal of 2000 warheads with such a low production rate.To attain this goal they need to have about 200 Topol-Ms (200 x 6:1200 warheads) and at least 72 Bulavas (6 subs x 12 missiles x 6 warheads :432 in total ) and considering the production rate of one Tu-160 per year it gives us 300 additional warheads (25 bombers x 12 missiles ).
So they need to produce at least 17 Topols and 8 Bulavas if they are to meet this plan in 2015 as they said they plan to do.So it leaves some unanswered questions…

Yes I agree your point is very good and what I’d like to know is if the U.S. too intends to keep many of their strategic nukes on bombers or no ?

A Tu-160 does not “drop” nukes.

I know that and I agree 2500-3000 kms is good but still cruise missiles can be shot down and holding a large part of one’s strategic arsenal seems a pretty dangerous thing to do,only ICBMs and SLBMs should be strategic nuke carriers in my view excluding the strategic bombers from that role.
