Surely the intakes of a big pison engine will fall to the same problem. I wouldn’t want molten glass and silica in my car lump. My car air filter is for that, but the larger piston engines don’t have such paper filters do they? I thought they only had a mesh type (About 33swg, 0r 0.254mm).
They used to fit lage sand filters to the Spitfires and Hurrican’s flying over North Africa because of the sand. I’m sure that this stuff might have the same effect at high altitude.
Let’s not forget the pitot static systems, the air conditioning systems and all lubricated parts exposed to this sfuff.
The BBC was quoting un named industry sources saying WEDNESDAY!!!
I bet the AVP at Manchester is quiet!!!!

Yea a CNN report on the tele from JFK showed how BA traffic was in a mess but people travelling to Reykjavik had no issues and the flight was on time.
Quite ironical.
First they steal our cod, then they steal our money and now they are trying to ruin our airline industry. WILL THEY STOP AT NOTHING?!!!!!!!
I think we should have finished them off during the cod war!

Had a lovely queit day today!
The airfield was eirily quiet. No APU’s running, hardly any vehicles driving around.
I have heard that Emirates is laying on an extra flight on saturday to try and shift their backlog.

P.S. What is a troll?
I wish I could sleep soundly on a long haul flight!
Fly a bit smoother and you might;)
A friend of mine travelled a lot when he was a kid. Consiquently when the engines start, he falls asleep. Now he’s an aircraft engineer and this is a REAL problem during engine runs! I was in the flight deck of a 747 once, with all four running. Every time we paused to take the figures he’d drop off!

Very sad and how dreadful that it hapens when they were going to an event trying to heal old wounds. The Russians must feel awful about this.

1/ If a plane injests bird/s does it have to land asap or does the pilot have choice of whether to carry on to destination
The engine is designed to withstand a bird strike. If the bird damages the core of the engine the EGT will rise and the engine will start to vibrate. Biggles will have no choice!
2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight
No
3/ Is it true the cruise is safer than take off and landing
At take off and landing you are close to the ground, THAT is were flying is dangerous. At 35,000ft, there are no mountains, no tall buildings and the ground is far away.Happy days
4/Is clear air turbulence a media invention
Turbulance from other aircraft, the jetstream call it what you will bounce around a bit some times.
the reason i ask is a guy has joined another holl website i use and saying he is a pilot and has started a fear of flying thread
Crap pilot ain’t he!! Our man Deno would say that flying is fine (Said with respect, please don’t hit me!)

Most likely the fan cowl, it has always been a poor design.
Thats what I was thinking but the fact that they didn’t say “Portions” stopped me from saying that.
Bmused55. Don’t forget the engine cowls also form part of the fire protection system. If the engine fire extinguishers are discharged the cowls contain the extingishing media around the engine and the fire. Mind you, if you have lost both fan cowls and then you have an engine fire. It just isn’t your day!!!

Sadly they lost a pilot in a 2/3rds scale P-51 during another airshow there as well.

Back in the sixties there was an American stand up comedien called Bob Newhart. He did a sketch called “The Grace L Ferguson Airline (and storm door company)” It’s not on Utube. It might have been writain yesterday!
Rgds Cking
(BTW Bob Newhart is still around and is very talented)
Have they said what “Portion” of the engine cowling it was yet?
It is a reasonably regular occurance. We some times get the airfield ops guys coming into our office with a lump of composite saying “Any idea what this is?” I make sure that it hasn’t got my airlines name on it and then deny all knowlage of it!

We left one of our night shift asleep in the cabin once. We expected him to wake up as we towed it out of the hangar. He ended up being woken by the cleaners over on the terminal!!! How we laughed:D Tech him to skive off

Nice shots Grey. I still can’t get over the winglets on the 767. TWELVE FEET tall!!!!!!!!

I think the book “Project cancelled” has a drawing of a Trident with under wing stores. Perhaps this was the proposal??
Trident Man will know.

I believe the 777 had the most trouble free entry into service of any type….at least that was the Boeing hype at the time.
Er…No. Ny BA contacts tells me they had a dredful reputation within BA for the first few years and it was mainly due to the engines. They were called “The concrete queens” or “The cripple seven” for quite a while.
Further, I don’t recall the GE90 issues you refer to at all. IMHO the real reason BA switched back to RR (remember the uproar when they had the audacity to buy GE’s on the early 777 models?) was nationalistic in nature.
The reason why BA chose the GE90 in the first place was all tied in to BA’s sale of their engine overhaul buisness in South Wales.
And see what that got them: The only 777 hull loss to date has been caused by RR engines….. .
Don’t belive that;)
The aircraft now is one of the most reliable aircraft that I deal with. I have had a lot of problems with the GE90,s. It does consume oil by the crate load were as the Trent sips it. The GE90-110 as fitted to the -300ER and -200LR have had the oil consumption issue resolved. The aircraft as a whole is a little over complicated in places. They seem to have taken tried and tested ideas off other Boeings and added extra un neccessary bits to it.
