I always go a bit cold when I see stuff like that, if a Gas Turbine goes wrong it doesn’t do it slowly and with any finesse. I would never stop anyone running jets as a hobby but I would take a lot of persuading to be anywhere nearby when they are.
I would agree with you 100% on that! I’m also suprised that there were very few ear defenders in the videos. All jets are loud close up!
The recent incident with a mechanic and a 737 at El Paso should serve as a salutory warning to all – if a bloke with 40 years experience can get caught out anyone can.
(A word of warning. If you don’t know about the El Paso incident I must warn you there are some absolutely horrific pictures of the incident out there so please have a careful think before you Google. They really are graphic and certainly not to be viewed unless you are prepared to be very shocked)
I think that the pictures refered to should be shown to EVERYONE who works on or around aircraft regardless of how squemish they are. I don’t care if they faint, throw up or have nightmares if it saves just one persons life then it would have been worth it. I see the ground staff at my airport regularly risk themselves around running or spooling down engines. It makes me go cold every time. Yes, I do tell them and yes I have reported this!

Have you considered the RAF? The closing age for aircraft technician is 29. You would get a good training, get paid, get loads of expierince and get civilian qualifications at the end of your time. The downside is, obviously being away from home and being tied to the job for a number of years but it is a good way into aircraft engineering for a late starter.

American Airlines were late customers for the 757 so they won’t be retiring them just yet.

The engineering industry is reducing in size all the time in this country, so there are very few jobs anywhere – even for those with rafts of experience.
I would echo this statement VERY strongly. The maintenace industry is in the doldrums at the moment and, if the rumours are true it’s only going to get worse.

this one was an ASR Sea king that had had a bump and went for a major service to give it a good going over. it was discovered that prior to its heavy landing a crack had started that went around almost a 3rd of the bulkhead that held the whirlybits, engine and gearbox to the rest of the airframe. the crack had been getting bigger over a period of time judging by the sludge trapped within.
When I worked on Seakings, we got a telex from the Navy technical branch telling us to look for cracks in two stringers that the gearbox was bolted to. They said if the crack was more than an inch long, ground the aircraft and give tham a call. We found a crack 1.5″ long running through two rivit holes. We ran around like headless chickes for a bit then gave the navy a call. They said “Only 1.5″??? we’ve got one thats SIX FEET long!!!! Just keep an eye on it and repair it at the next major”
As for the 380. The found the cracks during an inspection and they have repaired them already. Whats the story??

makes you think they didn’t want it flying? compared to how fast Thomson fixed their old 767 in situ at Bristol
The 767-300 has broken it’s back several times in the past. They ALMOST have a standard repair for it.
The repair to the wing of the 380 was a far more complicated repair. It would be interesting to find out what the did, big scab patches or replace whole skins? Either way, it’s not a job that you do every day, thank god.

Really… Do you have any pictures?
Of the ATP???:eek: I think there are forum rules about posting offensive pictures!:D
Thinking about it I think the BAe 146 had handles like this on the cargo bays too.
Rgds Cking
Looking at it I think the 748 is out but what about the 125 and even Nimrod?
The fwd cargo door on the ATP had a similar designed handle on it.

he was mortified as to the possible fall out over it when we told him we had found the problem. Pointed out that where would you prefer finding the cause of the slow to accel, on the detuner or hot and high full of SLF on a short strip during rotation made his worries dissapear.
Some of the managers I work with would rather that kind of thing happen in flight because the resultant mess would be on somebody elses budget!

They are fairings that cover the flap tracks and flap drive mechanism. They are sometimes called “Canoe fairings”. They are made of fibre glass composite and do not contain fuel. The middle fairing in this picture also contains one of the fuel dump pipes. You can dispatch an aircraft with one of them missing but you do get a fuel burn penalty if you do.

A final point is the role of Virgin in the bidding for BD. If they have the money then DLH will sell it to them, simples.
I can’t see any bank lending VS the money to by an airline that LH couldn’t make profitable.

I agree, there will be a lot of worried people around Castle Donington at the moment.

Thats sad. I had a great time with British Midland when I was on work experience with them back in 1999. They had some really nice people working for them at LHR T1, T2 and also in the queens building.
The good news is that withe IAG buying BMI, they won’t be made redundant, as they would be if Lufthansa pulls the plug.

They got rid of the shroud on the NG.
I didn’t know that, thanks.
I don’t have anything to do with the NG’s but I’ve been working the -200’s and -3/4/500’s for years. When ever they say they are going to “Warm over” the 737 I think of the poor bits, the APU shroud, eye brow windows and the brake attachment bolts to name a few.
Now you tell me the shroud has gone that’s three of my pet dislikes gone!:D
I always think that the aircraft manufacturers should go down to the shop floor and ask the engineers about the bits that they hate on their previous designs before thay start to design a new aircraft. Every engineer has loads of them.

Looks like the have changed the design of section 48, and got rid of that awful APU inlet.
Let’s hope they have sorted out the whole of the APU bay and got rid of the bl***y shroud! I had to top the oil up on one last night, so the shroud is top of my hate list at the moment!
