outside of the US, what other countries would find suitable use for the LCS type ships?

Any nation that operates FAC’s that operate in a high threat environment. It;ll never happen, but I am sure Iran could use a dozen of these.

Personally I would take a few Visby’s and perhaps a couple Danish Stanflex vessels instead.

Let’s combine the best elements of every upgrade and see what we could end up with…

    probe aerial refueling
2x Pratt & Whitney PW1120 (two engines were on one ‘Kurnass 2000’ demonstrator in 1987) = TF30 equivalent thrust
    4x AIM-120B AMRAAM (German F-4F ICE)
    4x Python-3 (IAF) or IRIS-T (german test F-4)
    KS-127 LOROP (RF-4C long-range oblique photography)
AN/APR-47 EW system (replaces internal cannon)
F-4S wings (F-4J’s big wing with extra control surfaces)
    Twin-stick controls

What else can people think of?

Mitsubishi ASM-1 antiship missile – a nice little piece of kit, even if a touch expensive… Not too many opponents have a defensive ECM tactic for this little beauty.

A lot of Canadian military personnel (current and former) are gutted about this. This guy was a Challenger and Airbus A-310 qualified pilot. He flew the Prime Minister and the Governor General (Canada’s Head of State) overseas on multiple occasions and he also commanded at least one rotation at “Camp Mirage” Canada’s forward logistical base somewhere in the UAE that supports our ongoing committment to Afghanistan. Scuttlebutt was that he was also potentially up for command of our Air Force element in Kandahar (Heron UAV’s, Griffon and Chinook helos) in a future rotation.

He was also being groomed for General. If true the fact that he allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered a subordinate is just simply shocking and unbelieveable to Canadians, miilitary and civilian…. Let alone the possibly dozens of transgressions with civilians.

If true (innocent till proven guilty of course) how this guy was able to compartmentalize these sorts of heinous activities from his spouse, his family and a huge staff at a large military base is beyond me.

Something doesn’t look right about that picture…..

The sun’s shadow on the front half of the helo is at a different angle than on the rear of the same airframe.

    I call shenanigans.

The C-X looks to be an excellent aircraft.

If I were South Africa wondering what to do without the A-400M I would be looking to Japan.

Infact if I were Japan I would be heavily marketing this aircraft around the world asap.

    Good luck with that mate!

The Japanese kit has always been grossly overpriced as the Zaibatsu are more interested in having expensive homegrown projects they can overcharge the Japanese defense ministry for than anything else.

Here are some PAK-FA NATO code names:

    Frustrater

    Filibuster

    Fritter

    Freezer

Based on the track record to this point these might be good suggestions.

When the UK hangs Storm Shadows on the new Nimrods they will have a “poor man’s” B-52 long range bomber capability. That in of itself will increase the utility of the design.

If the UK wishes to continue to “punch above their weight” this is something they need to fund.

in reply to: the F-35, does it make any sense? #2423607

The question posted by this thread is not a sensible one with all due respect to the questioner, as it does not really address the realist such as it is. The F-35 is not going to be stopped in its entirety. Which of the three models that ees the light of day is another story.

The F-22 will never be exported. If the F-35 is cancelled the F-22 is not a viable replacement for F-16’s, A-10’s and F/A-18C’s. The only other relatively modern American fighter in the pipeline os the F/A18E-F.

At this point the F-35A is a done deal. The USA needs it and has no alternatives as they’ll never buy anything but domestic. Billions have been spent at this point and the program has ay too much momentum within the USA at least. It could be debated that virtually everybody else outside of the USA has other options (Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, Rhino, etc.). How it would fly politically in nations that have already spent tens of millions in R&D to buy something else is another matter.

The F-35B is needed by the UK, Spain, Italy and the US Marines (assuming the Marines want to keep V/STOL as a capability). Again I ask where are the other options available?

The F-35C is the on that is most vulnerable I believe if the USA is looking to save some dollars. At this point only the USN I believe is committed to it.

I for one think the “A” model should be trashed and development of the “B” and “C” models continued. Nations like Australia and Canada for example have had much success with navalized Hornets and the “C” model has some advantages over the “A” model when it comes to range and payload.

Which Mi-17 version is that? Unique rear door

Some VVIP version. The other clue is the square windows along the length of the cabin. Most other versions have round windows.

This will cost lives. Plain and simple.

Innocent civilians will die needlessly due to the simple fact that SAR will be degraded with the loss of such an important asset.

I am reminded (as a Canadian) of the Liberals under Chretien canceling the EH101’s as a Sea King replacement back in 1993. Numerous Canadian flight crews have died in ancient CH-124’s as a consequence of running on in worn out helicopters.

I hope Chretien can’t sleep at night. And I guarantee that the Brown government will rue the day they did this.

Germans have problems with Airbus A-310 MRTT, Canada not so much!

The Canadian Air Force says it hasn’t detected any problems with its A310 Multi-Role Tanker Transport, although it acknowledges that the German version of the aircraft has had issues with contaminated fuel. Both Canadian Forces A310 MRTTs hanot been grounded due to the discovery of hydraulic fluid mixed in with fuel. However the four German ones were. Air Force Spokesman Maj. Jim Hutcheson said this is not the case. “Our Airbuses are not grounded. We understand the German ones were, there was a problem with their hydraulically-driven fuel pump which is used to transfer fuel to a receiving aircraft. It was cracked and releasing hydraulic fuel into the tank. The other German aircraft are undergoing some modifications. We haven’t experienced this problem.”

Canada had two of its A310 aircraft, or CC-150 Polaris, converted to the MRTT configuration. They are designated as CC-150T (Tanker). Germany has four A310 MRTT aircraft in service, with the first being delivered in late 2003. Canada was able to do its conversion of the A310s for the tanker role as part of a German program.

The Air Force announced in February of 2007 that the first CC-150 Polaris to be fully modified for Air-to-Air-Refuelling had arrived back home at 8 Wing Trenton after completion of final modifications in Germany. The conversion program gave the Canadian Air Force back its strategic capability for refueling. The Canadian Forces had a strategic air-to-air refueling capability with the retirement of their Boeing 707 fleet in the mid-1990s, although C-130 tankers had been used for tactical air-to-air refuelling.

Waste of time. Canada will nicely shut up and get that comical fat sluggish bird that accelerates better than clean Block 50..

Unfortunately I agree with you Flex. Fanboys can spin it all they like but the F-35 is a pig, and flying a small number of SINGLE engine aircraft over the second largest nation on earth does not seem to make a lot of sense to me. I would even be happy with F18E/F or Rafale than F-35. The Typhoon would be ideal, but it’ll never happen.

China and all the fanboys in here can try and spin this J-11 as a new aircraft line all they want but lets call it what it is… namely a complete ripoff of Russian intellectual property.

This is no different than buying a few Chevy’s from America or BMW’s from Germany, putting a chinese engine and sone Chinese trim on them and calling them new Chinese designed and developed automobiles.

Russia should be screaming blue bloody murder to the World Intellectual Property Organization (of which China is apparently a member).
