[QUOTE=Entropy]Aside from the fact that of course Sweden is not part of NATO! (Offically at least, but that is my entire dissertation!)

Slovakia has a backup roadstrip just next to Presov helicopter base.. I am sure there are more of them..

I can confirm that. When I was young, I was still wondering why between Presov and small village Kapusany is six strip road πŸ˜€ But for non-military people it is not so clear, because between road and helicopter base is very bushy forest. If the war begin, it will be all cut down.

The most famous NATO “roaduser” was and still is Sweden. During cold war it was also Great Britain with its Harriers in the forests next to Germany east border. Switzerland time-to-time use backup arfields (photo from Buochs).

I am absolutely positive that Moon will never become colonized. Even if we managed to create some artificial atmosphere somehow via terraforming technologies, the air would be slowly vanishing up into space as Moon lacks enough gravity.

For small colony it is not necessary to live on surface – it means that no atmosphere is needed. If we use terraformig technologies sometime in the future, much better place for that is Mars.

Third, Moon is almost completely dry, has none or ridiculously small stocks of water. The amount of hydrogene and oxide compared to total mass is extremely small, a fraction of the values coming up with other planet-like objects. There are theories that Moon once collided with Earth and all water contents vanished due to extreme energy blow. Some facts support this theory – Moon is unusually big for such small planet like Earth is and it is also unusually close, close enough to have great influence on Earth’s oceans.

I do not agree. What does it mean “ridiculously small stocks of water”? Thousands or ten thousands of tons? If you will research required technologies and will recycle it, you can feed relatively big colony and still have some reserves of oxygen and hydrogen for space ships (you will be able to propel space ships and other applications much, much, much, much, much cheaper than on Earth). Also people on Moon can do extensive research.

Of course, I do not believe, that my grandchilds will be playing golf on Moon, but it is highly probable that we will use it for rational purposes. And for that, some human crew on Moon is essential. To say that Moon will never become colonized is too strong I think.

The Yak-38 barely had enough thrust to lift itself – much less with the weight of the kit you list :p

Sometimes it is not necessary to match future ambitions with reality. I remember proposed modifications of Douglas X-3 Stiletto to reach Mach 4 πŸ˜€

The concept of launching planes from destroyers, submarines etc has been mooted frequently but is generally held back due to the problems of space and maintainence.

Correct. I prepared an article about submarine launched planes from WW1 till now some time ago. The most interesting proposals were soviet Project 621 submarine with troopers, tanks an three Lavochkine La-5 fighters. Other were huge Boeing AN-1 (with Grumman F-11Fs) and AN-2 (with Mach 3 VTOL fighters) submarines made under Flying Carpet project.

A lot of too hot heads here in this topic.

Undoubtely, Israel has the biggest development potencial in region. But the main point is, that alone it does not have enough finacne, scientists and other resources to do everything separately. Because that, it must in some areas cooperate with others and we all know that the main partner of Israel is USA.

Almost. Ouragan and MystΓ©re were ugly. But it depends on opinion. I never really liked this MiG-21 like flying tubes.

I think you are right JAZZ, I couldn’t find any more info but found some art work by Adrian Mann here http://www.aemann.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/aircraft/speculative/harrier2.html

Hmmm. That are one of the first pictures that I collected, but till now I never connected them with drawing in the first post. Interesting however.

On the left is one of two Dassaults designs for the ECA (European Combat Aircraft). It was known as ACT-92. The second looked more like todays Rafale. Note the air intakes.
