There’s a bloke buried in the local cemetary here who was killed in flight school (Polaris Flight Academy). I believe he was Jewish/American, but volunteered for the RAF. At the time they didn’t make a fuss but early last year they got with the program & we had a fly over of a T6, USAF representatives from Edwards AFB & some RAF/RCAF chaps turned out in full dress uniform as they were on detachment to Edwards at the time. The Mayor gave a speech, local high school band member played Taps.
My parents were over on vacation at the time & I gave em the “jump in the car, we have to go someplace” routine 😉
(step dad is ex RN, mother lost her brother at Anzio on the Penelope). They couldn’t believe the turn out compared to what happens back in the UK. I posted something on here about it at the time, Feb or March ’07. There had to have been easily 80 people there & a slew of them were Brit ex-pats from the local area.

I believe that TIGHAR has been made aware that Earhart was flying a different kind of Lockheed twin so they have given up on the recovery.. 😉

The latter part of that being the bit where they (apparently – I didn’t watch it, this is second hand only) actually provided the audience with completely wrong information to prove their point.

People I have talked to were left with the impression that the Prius had hulking great batteries that needed to be dumped into landfill every two years and then replaced.

This just a blatant lie, or at best ‘making stuff up because the truth doesn’t support your prejudice’

As of March 2008 over 1 million Prius of both varieties had been sold.

At the purpose built recycling plant, constructed BEFORE the first Prius was sold to the public, less than 100 consumers batteries had been recycled by Spring 2007. (I’m sorry I have no more up to date figures.)

Some Prius are now up around 250,000 miles on the original batteries.

What was broadcast was a simple lie.

Remember too that the Prius is not designed primarily for economy. It was a solution to the need for a non-polluting city car that didn’t run out of electric power after 40 miles. Pretty good consumption is just a side benefit. TG missed the point totally. But then the truth doesn’t make entertainment does it?

Comparing MPG performance on a racetrack with a three series is a bit like comparing the shopping bag capacity of a three series and a F1 Williams on the run to Tesco. Pointless and irrelevant.

Lets not forget the “cradle to grave” pollution of a Pruis is actually just a hair greater than that of a Hummer….
This also takes into account the crap spewing out of Russian nickel & other metal (palladium, cadmium etc)mines/foundries/processing plants etc that actually create more pollution than is prevented by using these metals in the catalytic converters when fitted to cars etc.
The net cost of forcing cars to be built with “greener” emissions actually results in more pollution…. it just comes out of huge metal processing plants located in the Russian Artic instead of exhaust pipes of wheezing hippymobiles in California…..

& the cost of replacing the battery pack in a Prius also happens to be about the same amount as what you will have saved in gasoline over the life of the batteries (about $8000, altho the price of batteries is skyrocketing right now).
The result of this is that altho the running costs are the same overall, the additional cost of the hybrid over a conventional vehicle means you paid a premium to add more pollution to the planet (albeit in Russia) but the manufacturer also broke it off in your ass when you originally bought the vehicle from the dealership in the first place….

The bottom line is:
Every time someone buys a Hybrid, a polar bear dies… LMFAO!

And anyone who thinks that Clarkson is really as he portrays himself on TG is really missing the point- Jeremy is a supremely intelligent, very caring man.

It’s not a matter of his *intelligence* it’s his complete lack of anything even remotely resembling mechanical aptitude. My daughter had more mech aptitude by the time she was 3 than he has managed to grasp in several decades… He really shouldn’t be allowed to play with anything sharper than a sponge…:cool:

I often have thoughts about investing in a metal detector & having a poke about at the (at least) 7 or 8 P38 crash sites in this area.
The problem with investigating wrecks around here is that we have wildlife that can seriously mess you up including (but not limited to) several kinds of Rattlesnake, Bears, Mountain Lions & Bobcats.

I know one of the local P38 sites is awash with .50cal ammo…There’s even a P51 on another mountain near Ojai… several B24’s, a couple of P63’s, & at least 100 other known wrecks in this end of the county. The problem being that most of this stuff is just too dang inaccessible apart from the wrecks on the valley floor.
There’s even some very large pieces of Hellcat sat in the dirt at 29Palms Marine base (& a C130)

What’s Paul Day up to these days? Last time I saw him he was teaching Saudi’s how to fly Tornados… or at least navigate their way to Valley without the use of a telephone…Jeeze, that was 20 years ago, I wonder if he remembers the telephone story…..

Surely there must be a better use of petrol and Spitfire airframe, engine, and pilot time than fueling Clarkson’s oversized ego.
