If it’s anything at all like the completely useless, lie filled, manuals they print for cars & bikes it will likely have the Boeing Spitfire powered by a 19 cylinder BMW R2800 Diesel 3 row radial engine….

…… with a *pusher* prop….:rolleyes:

I think one or two around who used to post on here a fair bit, but are perhaps not now so prolific, would have a very considered view about the description of the starting point for Black 6 as “near-flyable static”.

I think that significantly underestimates the achievements of those who restored the Messer to flight status

I was under the impression that Black 6 is “flyable, but nailed to the ground”?

I was detached there a while back, here’s a couple of pics I took. The scale of the place was mind blowing. At the time they were converting some of the F4’s stored there to be unmanned targets.

The conversions are done at Mojave so I get to see them flying about quite often…..

….& in a rather brilliant display of irony, the company doing the conversions is BAe…;)

& they’re not allowed to employ Ex Pats Brits at the place…:mad:

Pilot was on the News last night. Apparently he landed behind the cop car & then had to “hop” over it…. I guess he lost the left wingtip somewhere behind the cop…

It was authentically painted in Rover Grey by me, if anyone wants to buy the remains of the can in my garage please make me an offer by pm and I will suppply any history you feel you might like to go with it !!!! :diablo:

I may be interested in the can of paint, but it depends on how many other forum members have actually owned it?;)

Thanks for the pics & link chaps 🙂

I for one, really want to talk to the mechanics, fitters, carpenters, and electricians that server on these types, because being an engineer myself I find more common experience, or useful information can be shared.

… very nice lathe though! Have you tried the RAF Museum department of Records for any references of workshop equipment? Or maybe the Public Records Office for any War Department, or subsequent Ministry of Supply records?

I’m in SoCal so dropping by the Records Dept isn’t an option until I pop home to Blighty. Last time I was there was ’91.
Where was the machine shop at Dx? assuming they had one.. part of the tech site behind the hangars maybe?

Pounds yard at Portsmouth had quite a lot of Sea-Lions up to about 10 years ago, with the exception of one or two, I don`t know where they all ended up.
He was only asking £2500 each.

If I knew then, what I know now…. used to play around that area when my dad was a Chief Gunnery Instructor at Whale Island. This would be between 1966 & the late ’70’s….
Used to look over at Pounds while picking up spent bullets by the bloody bucket load on the beach at the North end of the island… That grey mud on the beach must be about 75% lead….:eek:

Hi all,
Many thanks for the various Napier Lion bits, this is just me idly dreaming about the possibility a flying Supermarine S.5.

Now that there is either flying, or under rebuild an example of most of the main marks of Spit. A Supermarine Schneider racer would be nice addition to the portfolio of one of the more well healed operaters!

Kermit has a lake large enough for a Sunderland.. so…;)

Would really like to see a S.6 belting around the Solent, but getting an Rolls Royce ‘R’ a bit of a problem!

Use a Griffon 🙂

& as for the exhaust stack question:
Quite a few of the Reno guys coat their stacks with JetHot ceramic coating.

Hmmmm. This is reinforcing my long held belief (from listening to veterans) that the only RAF survivors of WWII were either Spitfire or Lancaster pilots & every single mechanic, clerk, cook, carpenter & machinist was somehow killed in action…..I’ve never met ONE of em :rolleyes:

This is an aircraft straight out of a complete rebuild, therefore full of snags and gremlins….no matter how good the engineering team it’s just a fact of life.

eh? I’ve worked on more restos than I can remember & that’s not how it works. When an aircraft is “straight out of rebuild” there shouldn’t be more than 1 or 2 minor squawks unless the guys doing the work were a bunch of clueless idiots… Who the heck do you work for?:eek:
