That last shot could be Edwards or Oxnard/Camarillo. There are/were some big hangars at oxnard from when they had fighters based there. Some of the QRA type hangars are still there & can be seen in some cheapo movie about an F117 going back in time & being used by the Luftwaffe  . I think there are 3 of those standing.
Those aren’t in the pics tho as they are at the end of the filed, not the middle so I’m inclined to think that last pic could be Edwards.. except for those fuel pumps…. never seen those at a US AFB…
    The mystery continues….

They bought the car to my school when I was about 8 or 9. What engine etc did the movie car use?

The photo was actually taken at Edwards AFB on 19 May 1968.

Really? when did they demolish that hill in the background? I can see Edwards from where I’m sat, I can’t see that hill tho. You are talking about the first pic in this thread?
The other thing that makes it doubtful being Edwards is the amount of grass & the trees. Edwards had a major shortage of both.

Around these parts they operate as Southern Air Transport… if ya walk across the ramp down there in Az there’s a line painted on the concrete out front of their facility, when you wander over the line armed guards appear & escort you back over the line….

I have it noted from a slide that MK923 was wearing the marks ‘OO-ARY’ at Oxnard , California in 1968 .

Sure looks like Oxnard given the local geography…. that bloody great hill in the background when all about is flatter than a pancake..

To turn this back on you – should the failure of the project to recover the B29 Kee Bird be seen as a reason for not attempting any other similar recovery projects?

That one failed because some muppet hung the fuel can for the APU directly above it, suspended from a coat hangar. B29 hit a ridge in the ice, coat hangar slipped, fuel can landed on hot APU, WHOOOOOMPH & the rest is history….

Oscar if you get the chance go fly with the Mustang guys at the airshows. I know of a certain A-26 driver who was a little pissed when he asked if he could fly with the fighters because the bombers were killing him and his answer from a smart arsed Corsair driver was “If you can hang with us, then you can fly with us”. The story goes that all he saw behind him was black and blue A-26 everywhere he went. I’ve also seen that same A-26 and driver out run Howard Pardue in the Bearcat. Howard got tired of trying to catch her and decided to form up on the DC-3 instead.

We took Feeding Frenzy to madera a few years back & on the Sunday wwe were taking off while there were 2 B25’s & 7 Mustangs in the circuit. Caught & passed one B25 right in the midle of the flightline while the other B25 was downwind. Caught & passed 3 mustangs flying formation while chasing the 2nd B25 (Executive Suite). Caught & passed him (blowing the fabric off one of the B25’s ailerons on the process…) & then set about catching the the remaining 4 Mustangs. At this point a voice from the tower cut short the fun with “Hey! knock it off! this isn’t Reno!” :diablo: :diablo: :diablo: :diablo:

I don’t think the SHF ever did complete loops at airshows, although they did cuban eights and barrel rolls in their routine up until the mid 90s. But I seem to remember that one of the CAF B-26 Marauder pilots (possibly the late Vernon Thorpe) visited Norway and advised them against doing that. I saw them perform that display only once, and it was very impressive to say the least!

That pic in WWW always cracked me up, some poor bugger was sat in the back facing backwards.. that had to feel a bit iffy…

I vaguely remember that picture, ZRX61. IIRC from the background of the photo, the aircraft was at height being photo’d side on from a chase plane. I am supposing that the manoeuvre was started at a fast enough speed, to enable the top of the loop to be reached at a safe flying speed. There would also presumably be plenty of airspace below the machine in order to effect a recovery.

Yup, in the pic the A26 was pointing straight up & the pilot still had the stick back. The pic was taken from he SHF Mustang

Something to do with the lack of moisture in the desert air (or something) – that’s why the USAF has ****loads of planes mothballed in Mojave, or wherever.

USAF storage is at Tucson (Davis Monthan), Mojave is full of airliners.

    Anything in Uganda?
