I’m surprised you could just drive onto the airfield at North Weald. At VNY you can drive to your hangar & that’s it. However if you’re a mechanic on the filed you can drive anywhere providing you get the permit after taking a test at the airport office & have to put a decal on your vehicle. Test info is here:

VNY also has an area for spotters & they put a round grommit in the fence so you can poke your lens through it. The FB group has lots pf pics, quite a few of which are taken inside the fence:

I had some jobsworth give me some grief at WJF a while back during the airshow about me being on the ramp. My AF d/l clearly states “AUTHORIZED FOR FLIGHTLINE” on it, plus I have my A&P ticket AND had an *Unrestricted” airshow credential hanging off my belt loop (his merely said *Ramp Access*). Told him to wind his neck back in.

I mentioned on the museums FB page that it looked like the place had been burgled, they didn’t respond…
