Latest news is it’s back together, engine runs this afternoon, record attempt tomorrow.
If there are issues with a few of them, Roush will probably start making new bits.
FFS, they aren’t telling all the boaters to ****** off, just the ones in the display area. The Blues manage to display over the water in SF Bay because the Coasties & USN tell the boat owners where they can anchor or moor… This way they don’t end up cancelling the display because of one or two sanctimonious jackasses.
If the boaters are allowed to stay on their boats inside the display area then I want the same deal at Dx & set up my lawn chair on the grass runway.
Won’t be today or tomorrow apparently, the Merlin sneezed yesterday.
Yup, it’s Challis, today’s attempt aborted. He’s back on the ground right now.
That’s the exact same set I have, but without the paint 🙂
My computer has shrugged off whatever was preventing me from seeing the OP’s link/video yesterday. btw, the shop is adjacent to Burbank airport, not LAX… although at 110,000+ sq ft I’m not sure *shop* is an adequate description.
AP Inc is Joe Clarks company, the guy who owns the former TFC (& now dual-control) Tigercat. He knows a bit about aerodynamics, if you’ve seen a 737 with winglets, you’ve seen his products. He also shares Mr Greys passion for Astons.
Yup, mag spanners. I have a swivel set that includes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, a screwdriver & one feeler gauge. They live in a small tin tray in my toolbox that contains all my other feeler gauges. Ken Wells my metal work teacher had us all make a tin tray with soldered corners & wired edges. Think I was 11 at the time, so I’ve had it for 46 years 🙂
Didn’t know it at the time, but he wrote 3 books on metalwork for school kids. Wish I could find copies of them now.
And after giving it some thought, the last time I used them was on my ’30’s JAP speedway bike in 1985….
The ’34 Rolls has a Merlin, the Bentley is apparently Meteor & he has another Merlin on a trailer with a paddle prop & exhaust stacks that look like the newer ones made in the Balkans (Romania?). There’s also a spare Meteor engine stuffed in one corner of the shop. What’s really impressive is the giant WWII Packard he has from a boat that makes a Merlin look like it was built for installation in an Atco mower.
The Rolls used a Jaguar trans as the “weak spot” in the power train as they didn’t want to grenade the original RR rear axle. They blew so many trans that they got the replacement time down to about 20 minutes.
Checked my lottery ticket last night…
The bad news: I didn’t win the $432.5M
The good news: Neither did any other ******.
As posted above it says metal in the oil sample sent for analysis. it’s not like they discovered chunks with visible part numbers stuck in the tea strainers in the sump… & the analysis will have been able to pin point where the metal has most likely come from once they work out which metal it is. Evidently they found traces of something they don’t normally find from the usual wear & tear.
The grounding will be so they can get samples from the other engines & send them for analysis to see if the same stuff shows up as they found in the problem engine.
Do they use auxiliary filters, Cuno’s & cartridge filters etc on their aircraft?
SOFIA came back from NZ this morning. didn’t see it fly in, but it was sat on the ramp when I drove past about 20 minutes after it’s ETA.
