Too cold for painting today, so the Escape hatch didn’t get it’s top coat:apologetic:, so instead Dave, cracked on with stripping down a bomb crutch so that we could draw it up. Whilst the rest of rallied around to prgress parts for the rudder pedal footrests. Slow progress unfortunately as there’s lots of ‘bitty’ things to do, but we drilled and slaved into position the first of the cast wedges at the aft end of the assembly, and made a start on the inner of the 2nd pilots’ footrests.
pics below. hopefully one more update before Christmas 🙂

thanks Tony
I’ve seen those discs before in collections but never been able to positively identify them. has anyone got any ideas?

Confidence is drilling perspex and not having it crack..Always makes me hold my breath doing it.
We took some advice from a very nice chap (Gary) from Plastic Solutions Ltd in Bedford. He recommended a different type of sheet which was flexible and resistant to cracking, as you can see it was easy to cold form and drilled readily
John
Absolutely, just PM me and we can arrange a visit 🙂

Only a few of us were at the workshop today, so whilst Dave G was stripping down a bomb clamp to be drawn up, Graham and myself endeavoured to fit the remaing 100 or so 4BA and 2BA screws holding the perspex to the frame. This we did with a few minutes to spare, we would have fitted the latching mechanism but realised once sprayed that it was a slight different shade of cockpit gree to the frame which then stood out like a sore thumb! Have to order some more from our usual source. Anyway some new hinges have been drilled and fitted and bar the issues mentioned above the hatch is virtually finished.
This has been a nice diversion for me away from working out the assembly of the rudder pedal footrests so I guess I’ll be back on them next weekend…
here’s the pics of the hatch

we’ve used various people over the years and generally once you explain what it’s to be used for they add the pattern into one of their other jobs and you’ll get it relatively cheap. Recently we’ve used East Coast Castings of Watton Norfolk, which came in FOC. Shrinkage rates can be found by a quick google found this for guidance https://www.haworthcastings.co.uk/news/shrinkage-in-sand-casting

about time
Hi all
would have liked to report that the escape hatch was completed this weekend, but alas I hadn’t ordered quite the right length of 4BA screws. But we did install what we could so progress nonetheless :o). The interior of the hatch is now cockpit green so will just need some touching up once the hardware has been fitted. If you compare the clarity of the glazing compared to the hatch before refurbishment, I think you’ll be impressed.
Additionally, Cliff has collected some castings which we need to complete the rudder pedal footrests (have I ever mentioned how Shorts always go down the over-engineered route!). These were supplied FOC by East Coast Castings of Watton Norfolk. They need some cleaning up, and the photos below show where they’re fitted.

Ta chaps
Still progressing the cockpit flightdeck, with the first (of four) footrests that fit under the rudder pedals under way. These are mostly formed from sheet metal with the usual Stirling casting required at the rearmost end. These have been derived from the few photos that we have of that area but we’re confident that we’re at least 95% accurate.

Also in work is a restoration of the Pilots’ overhead escape hatch. We’d have liked to keep the original perspex but unfortunately it was too badly damaged to recover. The framework is all original and has been bead blasted to remove the light corrosion that was present. This has been etch primed and hopefully we’ll have this re-assembled and will even have some external camouflage paint applied, a first for the Project.

Aside from the painfully slow loading, the Forum seems to have lost something. It used to be a vibrant place with dozens of posts each day, now it seems to be withering away with people no longer posting updates as regularly 🙁
how great is that?? Hats off to you all 🙂
John
sounds like a Teleflex control cable James, could do witha good supplier of these as we need them at various points in the cockpit
John
Hi Cees
I’ve seen various pics on the net from repro installations with bungees but I always assumed they were a pragmatic means of mounting them without any other info. Was it a Stirling site that had the bungees?
Hi James
think we’ve got a bathtube Morse, but if not I’ll be in touch 🙂
John
PM sent 🙂
