I was there. Remember thinking to myself as they taxied out “I’ll get some shots when they land”. Famous last thoughts. Pretty scary when it happened.

Didn’t the newly re-restored Blenheim nearly get taken out on the runway by one of the migs? 😮

Reports that the obstruction lights on the crane were only switched on at night. If so they should be on 24/7 but whether the pilot would have seen them in the visibility that morning would be greatly reduced . Are they stroboscopic ? that would catch the attention, particularly in a high cockpit workload environment getting ready to land at Battersea.

I think the crane is a red herring for want of a better phrase.
You could have lit up the crane like Christmas. Human error is the cause here. Mistakes happen. You can try to make a situation as safe as possible but life and human nature intervene. This is just an unfortunate accident and nothing more. We are all human. We are all fallible. Situations in life occur and accidents happen. It’s life. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

The aircraft has obviously been converted from it’s Falklands version to a more modern one. Is it possible the aircraft will (or maybe has) be re-converted back to it’s original lines?

The latest news item is a load of rubbish.
The pilot flew into a crane. Mistakes happen.

Be good to see a show back at Biggin Hill. It’s a great venue and always well attended by the public.

    Hi All,

As you can see from the title under my avatar I’m a Mosquito nut. New Zealand was way to far to go and see a flying Mosquito, but Canada – that’s just about in range. I was wondering if there are any more nutters like yours truly that might be making the pilgrimage? If there are it would be good to me up:cool:

    TTFN,
    Neil

I’m thinking of going. I’ve been to Toronto before and saw the Lanc fly over. Never been to Hamilton.

At Biggin Hill one year there were two smart cars. One painted like a Spitfire and one like a 109!

I’m in danger of turning this thread into `What have the Romans done for us` thread but….don’t forget the McGregor twins Fighter Pilot and Bomber Boys both BBC productions. Thinking of getting those on DVD.

I have seen photos of a Spitfire from the film fitted with strobe lamps ( light bulbs essentially) which protruded from the eight gun ports. However no footage of these being used appears in the film. There is one scene in the film (Polish Hurricane attack sequence) where there is a close up head on shot of a Hurricane firing its eight Brownings and you can see flames protruding from the gun ports. I am not sure whether this was done with a real Hurricane in the air or with a replica or even a model in the studio. There is also a similar shot in the film of a Buchon firing its guns – same comments apply.

The shots of the Heinkels firing their nose and dorsal guns appear to employ actual weapons loaded with blanks.

    Colin

I’m pretty sure the Hurricane with flaming guns is a model.

Interesting article. Maybe from the ashes will emerge a better HMV?
Had forgotten about Jessops. Nuff said.
