I was watching an old TV series, may have been the one with Anthony Quayle narrating.
A pilot talking about his exploits in the X craft series of rocket aircraft stated that during engine tests the aircraft blew up with him still in the cockpit.
Fire crews dowsed the aircraft with water and he stated that the only injury he acquired was wet trousers.
On hearing this the press reported,
“X craft blows up, Pilot wets pants!”
Hampden98 – sorry. I went back and realised that the story just says it was torpedoed, and I’ve been back and forth over the Wiki page a few times, knowing it had been sunk by another sub and assumed that this was all on the page. Once again, sorry.
Np.
The reason I asked if it torpedoed itself was because several German U-Boats fell foul of torps that, once fired, malfunctioned and described a large arc before hitting the unfortunate sub.
I forget the type of torp that did this.
So glad the Pima guys will be getting a Spit. When I was last there it was number one on their list. For somewhere the other side of the world they probably have the best British aircraft collection outside the Uk. Off the top of my head they have Bolingbroke, Hurricane, Viscount, Gannett AEW, Shackleton, Gnat, Jet Provost, Lightning, Hunter, Vampire, Harrier GR3, Jaguar and a Tornado even though its a German one.
Not forgetting Vulcan.
Are there any height (altitude) restrictions at Scampton? Wondering if we may actually get a full display from the Reds?
What’s Scampton like as a venue? Plenty of history to see on the ground, the dog etc. or will most of the base be off limits?
I quite like the idea of an airshow at Scampton for the obvious Reds at Home and potential historic feel.
How did the sub meet it’s end? Was it torpedoed by another sub or did it torpedo itself (not that uncommon) ?
Reading through this thread I seem to be in a minority when I say that’s brilliant news.
Hope to see one and more importantly hear one fly in my lifetime.
Ahh that’s cleared that up – I thought it was to do with exhibitionism in car parks
Isn’t that called Cheesing?
Village of the damned sounds likely, I’ll have to watch it to be sure.
Were there any others with a similar scene?
BTW I watched a movie last year, again black and white, with a village where everyone is dead. They overfly with an aircraft
and there is a scene where they place a monkey in a glass jar. Pump in the unknown virus and the monkey dies.
What is disturbing about this film is they appear to kill the monkey for real 🙁
It’s an American film I think. Can anyone name that one?
BTW2. On the subject of killing animals in films for real did they really kill those vultures in Patton?
At what point does an r/c model become an ultralight and do you need a permit for it once it gets past a certain size?
Hi All,
Alan,
If you like Brian Wilson you’ll really like It’s a very compressed life story but shows hoe manipulative his personal Dr was in his life so sad really but just glad of the outcome of it all..:cool:Last night I watched the remake of ‘When The Earth Stood Still’ (Sky Cinema) not one of Mr Reeves better films but watchable if you like the Sci-Fi genre messes with the original time line of events a bit compared to the original but basically all the elements are there. As always it’s all down to personal taste and I enjoyed it for what it was..
Starring:- Keanu Reeves,Jennifer Connelly,Jaden Smith,Kathy Bates,Jon Hamm,John Cleese,Kyle Chandler,Robert Knepper,James Hong and John Rothman.
Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), an extraterrestrial visitor to planet Earth, becomes the herald of upheaval on a global scale. As the world’s governments and scientists race to understand what is happening and how to stop it, Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) and her stepson come to understand the chilling ramifications behind Klaatu’s statement that he is a “friend to the Earth.”
Geoff.
A much underrated but excellent film in my opinion. One of my favourites.
Why would a U-Boat be carrying 12 tons of liquid mercury?
You can get air brushes cheaper and some are okay. My first airbrush was £45. However I killed it spraying cellulose paint as it melted the rubber seals.
Better quality air brushes use ceramic seals.
If you have a compressor already and is suitable that will remove a lot of the cost. Compressors are typically £40 – £100 to buy (pro ones £300+).
When I first started airbrushing I was a little disappointed as my initial attempts were worse than hairy stick painting.
There’s also the time to mask everything for spraying, then re-masking, then re-spraying, re-masking etc.
You’ll need a mask, maybe a spray booth to extract all the overspray and fumes.
The extra effort is definitely worth it though.
This news item amused me..
