It’s driver psychology. Safety in numbers.
I always park away from everyone for the same reason. Or park next to something more expensive.
At the end of the day it will be on the scrapheap eventually so why worry. Vauxhall quicker than most.

Would the Finnish markings be allowed in Germany?

It could have been the ex Fighter Collection example. As I read that the remains had been sold.

Interesting that anything survived of that aircraft. It was pretty much destroyed in the crash.
Hope it gets, or parts go towards another flyable example.

Best picture has to be the cockpit shot. Wow, scary stuff!

Maybe it would be a good thing for the Lancaster to do a tour of Germany and drop poppies over several significant sites.

I used to buy both magazines because they were both different.
Flypast was the warbird restoration magazine with articles about restorations, airshows etc. Aeroplane was a more general magazine with civilian, articles etc.
Most importantly they were different magazines. Flypast kept to a similar format where as Aeroplane kept changing. One minute retro, next minute civilain, next minute hotchpotch.
Of course for me they are both academic as I tend to get most of my information on the internet now and my interests are more for model making (in terms of the mags I buy).
In the past I had plenty of money, mags were cheaper and I tended to buy more. Now I have to be selective.
Another thing about Aeroplane is the cover. Not as exciting as Flypast or just annoyingly similar.

The CAF has flown the B-24 and the R4D over in the past so it could happen, but nothing is actively being planned. It is always being talked about but I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath. “FIFI” would need considerable work to get her ready for such a trip as all the fuel transfer systems have been disabled. By the way, contrary to what the writer of the article said, “FIFI” isn’t made up of six different B-29s.

Side story: In the late 70’s/early 80’s there was a very serious plan to take “FIFI” to Japan. In the end it was decided that the security of the airplane on the ground couldn’t be 100% guaranteed. That was the major reason the trip was cancelled. I’ve got the notes from a lot of the planning meetings and it would have been an immense undertaking.

I always feel a little guilty when operators plan to bring large aircraft to the UK.
What a risk and undertaking not to mention wear and tear. But I’m always pleased when they do 🙂
B24 lost an engine in the 90’s and the Lanc too. Loosing an engine is a distinct possibility and I bet they aint cheap.

I think it would be better to have an aircraft of the night as the subject, such as a Lancaster.
The Spitfire looks a little out of place at night.
A nice picture none the less.

Sex education for me started at school and involved a broom handle, a condom stretched to enormous proportions and a very graphic (not to mention colourful) film of child birth.
My parents didn’t mention such things.

[B][I]”In the 2011 Census, Christianity was the largest religion, with 33.2 million people (59.3 per cent of the population). The second largest religious group were Muslims with 2.7 million people (4.8 per cent of the population).

I still find it sad that so many people still believe in something, base their lives upon something that quite clearly isn’t real.
While this belief exists there is far more chance IMHO that there will be war. How can you reason with people who believe that there is life after death?

My disproof of the Christian faith is the fact that people cry at funerals. Why do Christians cry at funerals? The Christian faith says that after death we go to a better place to be reunited with our loved ones. The reason people cry at funerals is because they realise they will never see that person again. Even Christians don’t believe.

There is a story I was told, by an ex-8 squadron Stirling pilot that there was a celebration for Gibson in the mess and a large cake was made to mark the occasion. When Gibson entered, his head was unceremoniously pushed into the cake. Apparently he wasn’t well liked on the squadron.

Leaders are often not well liked. Bader, Gibson and probably many more people could mention. But that doesn’t detract from the fact they were great leaders.
It’s a shame Gibson was killed (he shouldn’t have gone back on ops) but don’t forget his crewman who died with him.

No, and there haven’t been for decades. We’re almost out of twin-boomers sadly. One two-seat Vampire, and another that flies very occasionally from North Weald. One Venom, and another who’s permit has lapsed, and the Vixen. That’s about it.

What happened to the Venom in Suez colors that made a wheels up at Biggin Hill many years ago?

in reply to: IWM Duxford – A good Airshow Venue?? #876792

I’ve been going to airshows at Duxford since 1989.
In those days Legends was called `The Classic Fighter Display` and was a much more low key event in terms of participating aircraft.
Since 89 I’ve only missed two `Legends` (whilst also attending many other Duxford displays) this year being the second and in that time I’ve always been onsite, parked by 10am.
I travel from the south via the M11.
The only time I queued to get in was the Spitfire anniversary display and that was only a few minutes. So this year sounds exceptional.
The information about how bad it might be was clearly posted on this forum and as I had already seen the Lancs at Dunsfold decided to give it a miss.
I never have an issue getting out of Duxford. I always delay leaving an hour or two after the show to take some pictures when the flightline is clear and to browse the hangers and stalls.
It’s pretty obvious by looking that the traffic is bad and if you want to queue in it that’s your problem. Never could understand why people rush to get out. I think people just need to chill a little and enjoy the evening. Dunsfold was another example. People queuing to get out a good hour before the show ended? If they had left it another 90 – 120 mins they could have driven straight home.
People should consider themselves lucky. I can remember queing two hours to get in and out of Fairford and Biggin in the 90’s. But did we care? Hell no, it’s an airshow!
BTW anyone remember the queue for RAF Abingdon during the special flypast?

Is Duxford a good venue? No, it’s a great venue!

I am wondering of the queues to see the two Lancaster’s might indicate people want a little variety? Perhaps a little refresh of some of the flying displays might be called for.

Is the Beaufighter still being worked on or has it been parked?
Doesn’t look like much has happened since I last saw it a year ago.
I remember when it arrived complete with Goofy nose art. How long ago was that?
