Did this happen at night? Flight over the sea at night can be a funny thing. There have been several incidents involving aircraft that flew into the sea and without a distress call.
Also have to consider major structural failure or fuel explosion.
Of course all of this is academic to the families involved.
While I can understand preserving a warship as a museum (guns, small boys etc), I can’t understand why anyone would want to preserve or visit an old cargo ship?
It’s a large, very large and expensive, booring, hunk of metal.
It wouldn’t be able to pay it’s way.
After a tough mission the crew were always amused by Squadron Leader Henderson’s Shadow Puppet demonstrations.
I think it’s one of those old wartime information posters.
“Never boast before going on a mission. The enemy may ridicule you.”
Ah, okay. Didn’t spot that. Thanks.
I can recall two incidents of aircraft having controls wired incorrectly.
One was a Halifax that had the wires running the wrong way around the pulleys which would make it extremely difficult to fly (read in a book but others may recall the details).
The pilot of said aircraft was always being `ribbed` about his bad takeoffs and landings. It wasn’t until he returned from a raid badly shot up and crash landed that they found out
about the controls. It was mentioned afterwards that he was an exceptional pilot to have actually managed to fly it at all with the controls in that state.
The second was an F15 that crashed fatally in the UK because the controls had been reversed after maintenance.
The BBMF’s main display dates have been put on their website.

When the BBMF displays with other aircraft (Red Arrows, Vulcan etc) do they include it in the list?
Thinking Canadian Lancaster and how to plan for these events.
Interesting but wouldn’t it have made more sense to have recreated the picture with modern aircraft?
The comparison would have made more sense.
I don’t have a problem hanging aircraft from the roof. I think they look quite dramatic and interesting, not to mention slightly scary.
I am surprised that they will hang them from the roof of the GW Building. Isn’t the point of that building `the building` itself?
I enjoy the building and the electrical panel as much as the aircraft within. A little piece of aviation building history.
Atmosphere and all that.
Interesting pic of the P40 mail carrier. The cowlings have been replaced and the Shark Mouth repainted. You can see the mouth from the original nose art still exists at the edge of the cowling.
All of these theories are great but why on backwards? I don’t buy the accuracy theory. Wouldn’t the tank hit the aircraft as it dropped away with the thin end near the nose?
Good fun debating.
This is very sad. I visited about 15 years ago and had a very enjoyable day which ended with a tour around the storage area and a demonstration of banner towing by an Ag Cat.
Kermit also ran up the 504 (I think it was, certainly a ww1 type) engine.
We have also lost Champlin Air Museum.
Perhaps the name was an issue. Fantasy of Flight? American Air Power might have gotten more punters through the gates.
I think what Kermit does is great for the warbird community. Every airframe stored is a potential build we might one day get to see.
Would love to see his Blenheim and Lanc take to the skies.
Maybe she is Hungarian http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhJQp-q1Y1s
I thought that when a V1 engine cut out the aircraft would nose over into a dive?
Wasn’t there a mechanism that prevented the V1 overflying it’s target. So when the prop counter wound down to zero
a mechanism (guillotine) activated that cut the fuel lines and control wires causing the V1 to nose over?
Can someone explain why we care so much about the Ukraine (Wasn’t there a treaty, and then of course oil) ?
Isn’t this just Russia sorting out it’s own internal affairs?
The impression I get though ( and you may know better) is that at that stage it was a fairly viable restoration, but since then its condition has worsened?
Moggy
Is this aircraft now with Kermit Weeks?
Last time I saw it, it was lying on the grass outside a hanger at Biggin Hill.
