    Sorry?
T45 8k tons??? What u mean with tons? British tons are different from the european/metric system tons?
The Horizon/T45 will displace 7k tons (european/metric tons). A Burke, bigger than Horizon/T45 and with 4 LM2500 is 9k tons.

Talking about T45 it would be glad if the Samson radar will work properly after the billions Β£ RN is losing.
T45 is a very expensive platform and 6 units will be a great financial effort for HM Β£.
Sorry, but 2 AW-101 every ship or an ASW version of T45 is nothing more than nice dreams. πŸ˜‰

I dont recall saying that FREMM was small. I said it was too small for expeditionary warfare in a contested littoral!. Compared to what we need – which is something like an 8-9000ton DDH – FREMM does not make the grade.

Interesting you say that the FREMM hangar can be extended – would you expect the aviation fuel stores, air ordnance stores, chopper maintenance facilities to be equally extendable on a 6k ton hull?.

    Are u joking mate?
8-9000ton for a fregate is something that only the great USNavy can effort, not a european navy as RN.
Probably is better that I remember that RN will have 6 T45 (7000tons) and will have to ask the RAF the aircrafts for the new carriers for lack of money.
Before saying Fremm are small is better to ask UK taxpayes what they think about ‘powerful’ RN with 9000tons frigates πŸ˜‰

FREMM is not a good fit for the RN unfortunately. Essentially its too small for the power projection ASW mission and it will be too expensive in operational terms to be much more economical in the patrol mission than the current Duke class boats.

Effectively the C1 ASW capability needs to be a platform capable, at minimum, of operating a pair of Merlins because no-one, in their right mind, is going to want to send an expensive frigate into the shallows to dig out SSK’s. Also there is a vaguely defined class size of 8 hulls for C1 through the likelihood that the new C1 will inherit the 2087 towed arrays from the 8 upgraded Type 23’s. 8 FREMM will nowhere near offer the kind of capability we’ll need to exist in an SSK contested littoral.

With the lack of Β£ in RN who could efforts a couple of Merlin for a Type 23????

The Fremm in italian version can already support 1 AW-101 (Merlin) and a NH-90. Can be fitted wih an additional LM2500.

Type 23? What is? With 4300 tons of desplacement the Dukes are corvettes in comparison to the Fremm (5800 tons). πŸ˜€

Considering the large empty space in front of the VLS, are there any plans for a larg caliber gun? Like a 127mm?

    Nice pictures.
The old Mirage 2000 with its POD is necessary to help the modern Rafale to assist in bombarding? Without Mirage 2K are Rafale blinds?

Any news about the reduction in number of Rafale?

The Mirage 2K in the picture is the same of ‘Les chevaliers du ciel’, with the same POD?

Of course Cavour has the main task to operate in the Mediterranean Sea as required by the policy of defense of the country, even though Cavour has been built to be capable to operate in blue water when necessary or required by the international coalitions.
The high price of the platform is due to the high standard required to build a capital ship capable to lead and operating in a indipendent BG, although a small BG.

Cavour has to satisfy the requirement of MM to lead a coalition BG when necessary, as well as France with CdG or Uk with Ark/Ill.

    No.

But at least, Rafale is already a fine CAS fighter, according to UbiSoft, in the last Tom Clancy’s game trailer :

    Very nice,
the pilot has the helmet of F-35 and the Rafale is so full load that probably has the EJ200 engine

    It wasn’t April’s fool.

I’m not sure of the future of PA2.

I don’t know if the Marine will reduce its number of Rafale.

It could be 44 fighters less for the AdA.

Oh NOOO!!! It would be a catastrophe for many AF.
In Italy the next prime minister (Berlsconi) will say ‘Why the AMI should have more modern fighter than AdA if they spent 3 times our budget?’ and He will have a good reason to cut EFA and F35A…. 😑 😑

That will probably happen in other EU countries.

Total program unit cost, yes. But that’s only from our Gvt point of view. This shouldn’t increase the flyaway cost by much.

    πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

You are positive Tmor, if the number of Raffy will be reduced the prices will grow up ad the future development will be more difficult. If we add the export difficults of Rafale, so the further upgrade will be very difficult due to the high costs for the upgrading of few aircrafts.
Last, but not least, this will be bad for the export image of Rafale. If France doesn’t want its own aircrafts, so, why someone else should buy it???

    Conclusion:
please, don’t cut the Rafale, it will be a great mistakes and a damage for France and EU. If NS or Dassault are looking for more money buying the future French Air Force One, they can rises taxes.

Finally, we should get only 250 Rafale, instead of 294. πŸ™ Nothing official yet. But chances are that it will really happen.

    Sad news.
How many Rafale for the navy and how many for the air force?
There will be the risk to have insufficient aircrats for the 2 aircraft arriers.

Cutting 44 aircrafts it looks to me as too much and will increase the unit costs. Above all, Dassault (that strongly supported N. Sarkozy to the last elections) will be not happy.

    Be honest Tmor, it’s April’s fool??? πŸ˜€

So, how are we going to respond when France’s CdG will undergo maintenance? Or Spain’s Principe d’Asturias? Or – untill recently – Italy’s Guiseppe Garibaldi?

France CDG will be available at the end of 2008 (may be) after 18-20 months of maintanance (every 5 years). The spanish PdA is completing its maintence and the italian Giuseppe Garibaldi is not in maintainance, but in active duty. The GG will go for maintainance next year when the already ready Cavour will be admitted in the fleet, so Italy will doesn’t have a breack as France, Spain, India or Uk. Uk has 2 aircraft carriers in service, but the RN has no more aircrafts.

in reply to: Should the UK get the F35C? #2481195

What is the rationale behind the UK getting the less capable and more expensive F35B as opposed to the F35C, considering the new carriers could be configured to handle either?

Because of the famous ‘friendship’ between RN and RAF.
RN will provide the aircraft carrier.
    RAF will provide the aircrafts.

F35C is for CTOL aircraft carrier, that means catapults and arresting gears.
RAF doesn’t want to pay qualification and traininig of pilots for CTOL carriers, beacause that means to assign pilots and aircrafts permanently to the naval group (aka RN). Pilots have to train constantly while working on carriers.
Buying F35B, RAF will have flexible aircrafts and will remain the leader of airwing.
Look what’s happening today. RN doesn’t have any aircraft (Sea Harrier are taking rest) and HMS Illustrious/Ark Royal are surfing the 7 seas asking to italians and spaniards the aircrafts to train the aircrew onboard the ships, because the RAF Harriers are in Afghanistan.

RN will buy 2 huge STOVL aircraft carrier, but that means the end of Naval pilots.
RN finished to recruit pilots for RN aircrafts, because in the future there will be not a RN JSF Air wing.
During the past years, to become a Harrier pilots there were 2 options, the first to join the RAF academy and the 2nd to enroll in the RN academy and become a naval pilot.
In the future the 2nd option will be not available. There will be only RAF pilots qualified to operate onboard aircraft carriers, but they will be RAF pilots and nothing else.

Probably RAF will buy a mix of F35A and F35B, but never F35C.

Four Eurofighter Typhoon Air Forces United in Exercise

allbergmoos, 13 March 2008. For the first time, all four Eurofighter Typhoon core Air Forces from Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom combined their skills for a mutual exercise at MorΓ³n Air Force Base, near Sevilla, upon invitation of the Spanish Air Force. Codenamed β€œTyphoon Meet”, the deployment commenced on Monday 10 March and officially ends on Friday 14 March.

In total, 20 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft take part in the exercise: the German Air Force deployed three aircraft from Fighter Wing 73 β€œSteinhoff” from Rostock-Laage; Italy’s Gruppo XII 36 Stormo, based at Gioia del Colle, and Gruppo IX 4 Stormo, at Grosseto, both sent two aircraft; a total of four weapon systems came out of the Royal Air Force’s No.3 and 11 Squadrons from RAF Coningsby; with the remaining nine already stationed at MorΓ³n as part of the Spanish Air Force’s Gruppo 11 Ala 11.

The objective is to demonstrate the interoperability of Eurofighter Typhoon and its air-to-air capabilities while training with, and in mock combat against, other fighter aircraft types. While tactical aspects in realistic scenarios are to be evaluated, of equal importance is the inter-squadron comparisons with regards to maintenance and logistical support.

Eurofighter Typhoon flies in formations of up to twelve aircraft against fighters brought in from across the Spanish Air Force, including a combined ten F-18s from Ala 12, Torrejon, and Ala 15, Zaragoza,(supplying six and four respectively), as well as four Mirage F-1 jets of Ala 14, Albacete.

In addition, the Spanish hosts had invited the Portuguese Air Force to take part in the exercise, who brought with them four F-16 assets of 310 Escuadron, Monte Real. The Spanish Navy also played their part with four Harrier AV-8Plus of 9 Escuadrilla, Rota. The Eurofighter sortie rate for the “Typhoon Meet” was three per day, with a total of up to 70 different aircraft flying in the training areas over Toledo, Albacete and Huelva (Atlantic Coast) daily, which delivered an impressive operational scenario for the military experts………………….

Italian Air Force has bought 4 KC-767.
