    Bluff? Which bluff?
The bluff will be to pay a lot of money for an aircraft downgraded that need the authorization from Washington when it has to take off or fix a flat tyre.
The bluff is to pay money for an aircraft that doesn’t exist and will be full service in 2015 (may be!).

Rafale is a good plane, cheaper than F35, ready and french will not create problems to give their best. Partners have to considerate that.

Uk payed 2bil$, Italy and Netherland payed 1bil$ for demo and start of the project.
How many Rafale they can buy with this money?

No doubt USA is able to build the best aircrafts. ๐Ÿ™‚

Plan B? Seriously? IF US will give to brits the Hi-tech secrets, then also the other partners will ask for the same ‘operational sovereignty’. That’s for sure and for correctness.
How much does it cost a navalized Rafale?

However if F35 program fails, it will be a great problem for Italy.
Cavour costs is 1400 mil euros.

Okay, So the Brits aren’t happy and now its the Norwegians. Who is next ?

I think there will be more partners not happy in the future.
    Italy invested 1 bil$ (UK put 2 bil$).
The idea that using the aircraft is submitted to permissions of US is not easy to accept for all partners.
Also if an aircraft is damaged when in service, it has to return in USA and wait for fixing.

It’s better to buy, to own and to dispose of an aircraft less hi-tech (such Gripen or Rafale) instead of asking to use in case of self defense or other.

    Very interesting project.
Is this more expensive than FREMM class frigates?

Is that enough to justify 1400mil euros to italian taxpayers?
Do you think that 0,85% of gdp for military expenses r good for Italy to play a medium role in the Nato?

    To Santi.

Why Italy needs a new carrier?
It’s role in the world is not the same of France or UK.

So, I try to write a rank of radar:

    1-SAMPSON (T45)
    2-EMPAR (Horizon)
    3-AEGIS (F100)

    Do u think is correct?

    Sorry, but I don’ understand.
The BPE has the same role (carrier of F35), then why Italians throw their money when they can do the same job with a cheaper ship as well as BPE?

Because that SPanish price isn’t correct! $300mlln is NOTHING. You can hardly buy a modern frigate for that price. Maybe some corvettes, but nothing like a carrier though.

Another explanation is that Cavour is one of the first warships to be classed by a “merchant” Classification Society, namely RINA (they don’t have an excellent reputation though), but those Societies are extremely expensive to hire, add to it that they needed a new set of regulations to class a carrier and that of course the carrier has to be built taking these rules in account, something more expensive than just designing and building it.

Do u mean that Cavour is more expensive due to burocracy expense?
MoD of Spain reported 300,000,000 euros the cost of BPE.
The max speed of BPE will be 21 knots. It’s enough for a carrier?
