    And why?
    Fail to see any point.

    Why ?
I’m talking about an OPERATIONNAL point of view not from a Powerpoint point of view.
So, are we sure that Europe is so much behind non-American countries about the 5th generation ?

It is 1001% certain that both Russia and China will deploy their 5th gen fighter program into operational service.
    Do have doubts about this?

Oh, no, certainly not, but my question is how far your “will” will bring us in the future ?

Let’s see the question from an operationnal perspective:

    Really Flyable 5th generation designs
    U.S.
    F-22
    Russian:
    none
    Chinese:
    none
    Europe:
    none

How they’d manage to finance such a sale when they don’t want to pay to keep their existing fleet of Typhoons flying is beyond me. Why would the Austrians need to replace perfectly viable T1 Typhoons meant for the air policing role anyway?

    Certainly because it’s not viable.

Congratulations (and loadsa money) to Dassault. With a minimum of 48 to be delivered to Egypt and Qatar (wanted ASAP, I understand) when would any be available for delivery to India, if required? India urgently needs more fighters.

Well, Egypt want several planes for August 2015.
But what is sure is that India is in a hurry, should Qatar signed in few days, are we sure it wouldn’t turn into a real issue for IAF ?

My god, I have a hard time to think that we are talking of too much customers. 😀

What certainly helps is the fact that anyone seriously interested in the raf has to wait longer and longer as more people sign up. India has still not signed, so its planes will be behind Egypt and Qatar. If by some miracle UAE now decide they dont want to wait either that could add another 2 years to India getting to India getting its planes. Even the French Air Force wont be willing to give up that many of its own aircraft. Could be a little domino effect causing panic and helping Dassault….

Damned, I’m not the first to have that idea.
Well, about UAE, don’t worry, they aren’t in a hurry to buy Rafale with still excellent Mirage 2000-9 and F-16 black 60.
When I talked about a problem with the delivery, it would be around 2017-2018, not much after that period of time.

Not so fast. That quote from the ‘Indian Express’ has not been reported elsewhere. Don’t you think a statement of such significance would be doing the rounds as video on YT? Hence, you can file it with those reports declaring Modi would fly in a Rafale @ AeroIndia.

Years after the famous “India kicked the Rafale out of the competition”, I wonder how anyone can believe a single word from anonymous sources or rumors.

That threat — shared also by Dassault which is struggling to keep its Rafale production lines going as deliveries to the French Air Force slow this year — was one of the drivers behind the French government’s active role in clinching the Egyptian contract.

If you have a doubt about french way to prepare budget, don’t hesitate to ask.
The rule is that the french gov promised to keep the 11 planes per year. They did a budget without the proper funds and bet with a signed contracts with a foreign country but should it failed to happen, the french governement had to buy these 11 planes, that happened in the past already.

Remember, the Eurofighter consortium members submitted a revised, lower bid to New Delhi last October

Since the eurofighter has always been more expensive, how can you be sure that it would be different this time ?

The HAL/Safran MoU is just for some components of the M88, not the entire engine. Essentially, it’s a way for Safran to outsource and reduce costs.

So, why is HAL involved in that decision ?

To summerize, from French officials, the discussion is still going on. From Indian officials, the discussion is still going on, but that HAL/Safran information has certainly nothing to do with MMRCA and we will give some of the most important technologies for a fighter to India just to save some euros ?

For those wishing the deal to be cancelled: SNECMA and HAL announce today the agreement for the creation of a joint-venture to manufacture the M-88 engine in India:

Looks like the French MoD is backing Dassault, which means that the Rafale contract is as good as canned, since the Indian MoD doesn’t look likely to budge.

So, India added a requirement that make the whole program MMRCA impossible to reach a positive conclusion and the only solution is to cancel it ?

I cannot find my message, but I wrote years ago that nobody mentally sane would go with such conditions.
Well, only few months to wait.

The cheap alternative for the TSR2 does not exist, its cancellation was a bad thing all round.

and what about a Mirage ?

You do realize that Iraqi WMD’s were real and self-reported. The argument was about hidden quantities not if any existed at all. And the US found small non-disclosed stockpiles after the invasion. And Saddam’s goons performed regular drills as if they did have them in order to give the US reserve over the idea of an invasion. So it’s not like they didn’t have some probable cause.

We still have this kind of discussion in 2014 ? I mean, seriously ?

So, the former PM says no cahs, the defence aquistion budget is slashed, “negotiations” have been going on with Dassault for over two years and you really think this deal will happen?

Dassault gave up discussions about Alpha-Jet after 15 years of discussions. So, are you telling me you find 2 years a long discussion ?

IAF plans early induction of Rafale
Contract to be signed “Sooner than Later” in current fiscal

    http://www.indiastrategic.in/topstories3434_IAF_plans_early_induction_of_Rafale.htm

India’s negotiations with French Dassault for the acquisition of 126 Rafale Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) “are progressing well” and the contract is likely “sooner than later in the current financial year 2014-15.”

Obviously the deal must be financially viable.

What price do you have in mind ?
    8 billions ? 10 ? 12 ? 20 ? 26 ?

But if negotiations are at all compromised by intransigence or greed on the part of Dassault or the French government, as has occurred in the past… well, it might be time to bring back the guillotine.

    Source ?

Actually, price in itself was a tad cynical. Shortly the government will announce a raising of the FDI cap in defence from the current 26% to 49%*(and even higher rates for greater ToT). This stands EADS in good stead, especially as their FDI would entail a more accommodating stance on localised production and, crucially, ToT. So Dassault falls down on all three of the aforementioned: price, FDI and ToT.

    Source ?

I wouldn’t describe it as a step backwards “several years” either, more a ‘clean sheet’ tender for a new administration.
NaMo has an enviable record of getting things done & dusted very quickly.

EF2000 lines should close around 2018, that sound very close to restart the discussion from scratch.
