so what are the details to why the Rafale isn’t being considered by the japanese. Some one mentioned that it didn’t meet what the japanese want but whats the details?
From Dassault, it’s just that after the Korean case (and a bit like Norway too), they decided that some deals were only jokes and nothing more.
Japan didn’t look like a country free to buy what they want, so, Dassault asked them if they could provide them a proof that Japan is independant of their choices but nothing get back.
I thought the French were open to license production, tech transfers (from their Korea dealings)
They are, it’s the most important argument except the qualities of the plane.
The last one is a rafale.
From that angle, I find them pretty close too.
Herakles is not so powerful for AAW ship like someone says :diablo: :diablo:
Sorry, that’s not what is written. :p
BTW the Rafale is no longer considered by Japan:
The Japanese MinDef asked Dassault to bid, the answer was that they would if Japan can garantee a fair competition. No answer, so, no bid from Dassault.
The lack of information about the Rafale is truely amazing.
Mention a F-15T operator and the number they have and why it is better?
Singapore
Twenty IIRC
Better avionics and radar.
BRENDAN NELSON, DEFENCE MINISTER: The Super Hornet, the Block 2, the most advanced version of it, is a very capable, very stealthy aircraft.
BRENDAN NELSON: The F-22, whilst it is a brilliant air to air combat capability is not the correct aircraft for Australia, would lose stealth capability once we put bombs on it.
Judging by those 2 quotes this guy clearly missed his calling as a comedian!
How discret is the F-22 with external load ? 😀 😀
To bring the discussion back on topic: Can anyone tell me if the new AESA for the Rafale will have GaN based T/R modules or not.
Nothing has been official for any technologies.
The Su-30MKI only is totally superior to the F-15 but in reality in the arms race both superpowers held advantages at a certain time.
A modern F-15T has quite some arguments versus a su-30 MKI.
I think it’s that EADS bought some of the stakes and can earn money with them. But no idea how it works at all.
IIRC, EADS got these share from the French State at low price, so I’m not even sure if EADS has a total freedom with them.
Welcome in the french capitalism 😀
I read exactly the opposite that EADS wants to reduce its stake in Dassault. The Rafale being one reason as it is a direct concurrent to the Eurofighter.
Since years, I really wonder how that system of shareholding has worked.
xanadu asked a question about the active cancellation. Without being so far, I would gladly take your feeling of the Rafale stealth features. What do you think of them ? Sufficient ? Cost efficient ?
Thales never stated any capabilities of that kind but several technological bricks from their portfolio seems to fit very well into that concept.
Usual french BS ?
This is the first website who speak about that
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/9735/rafale1.htm
Unless Popular Science is a french magazine you should replace “french BS” by “speculation”.
Anyway, no way someone can think that active cancellation, even if available on the Rafale is THE magical way to achieve stealth?
It would certainly be more like a last joker, to breack the lock of a radar for few seconds.
What’s that? A Citroen? Anyway, have a look at this baby, the price difference is well, hum, let’s say noticeable. 😀

Why are you showing us an overexpensive car from a german owned company who used to have citroen made suspensions ? 🙂
With the exception of the su-34, what plane can really replace the F-111 ?
Most arguments of the anti E/F-18 crowd hardly worth the interest of being posted on a forum.
But from the mouth of former high rank officials, it’s amazing.
@arthuro: Funny then that Dassault was in talks with Norway as late as April 2006, one month before it was kicked out. I’d find it highly weird if Dassault voluntarily went out of the Norwegian competition if you consider that Eurofighter and Gripen will get some development money from Norway.
It was obvious that Norway wasn’t really interested into the RAfale, so, not a real loose.
Just like in Japan where Dassault asked to Japan to proove them that the market was really open to competition. No answer :diablo:
Rafale was not offered to Austria.
Dassault didnt even answer, they were not interested. Probably because the French didnt like Austria at the time.
Later, a request for proposal was sent anyway to the French, but the French still were not interested. Note, that was about the Mirage 2000.
I must say that I find the french behaviour here totally amazing.
Dassault propsoed the mriage 2000-5 (why not when your opponent are Grippen or F-16, around the same price) but with SuperHornet and eurofighter, why DAssault didn’t propose the Rafale is above my mind.
Now, there’s definitely something unclear in Greece, about Rafale
According to several french magazines (Le point or L’express among others), that’s very simple.
The french secret service has threaten the greek governement to make public some documents about several millions of dollars that reach a lebanese account of the brother in law of the minister of defense, and few days after that, Greece dumped the EF2000 with a crappy reason.
It seems that Dassault complained, and could not show the aircraft (no competition polemic, and no offer !).
As far as I remember, this was because Dassault wasn’t even invited, and reacted too late. But I can’t find evidence anymore…
Dassault and LM too, made several propositions, each way way cheaper than the EF2000 but Greece wasn’t interested.
You Rafale fans really shouldn’t bring up the Netherlands, because the Typhoon is presently the RNLAF’s favoured alternative to F-35. Both European aircraft have been flown by a number of Dutch pilots (both high profile VIPs and evaluation pilots) and Typhoon was preferred.
I’m sure you can prove that easily.
And yet you harp back to a paperwork exercise that was so unimportant, and so long ago, that I almost couldn’t find it in my notebooks.
Don’t you think it sounds like “Too much favorable to RAfale, doesn’t matter” ?
I told you you shouldn’t have mentioned the Netherlands…..

“The Dutch Way ”
As a starter, I’ll ask a question. After Greek Mirage pilots had flown Rafale, why did the Greeks not issue an RFI to Dassault for the Rafale, but did issue an RFI to Lockheed, Boeing and Eurofighter?
Starter ? I would say “troll” instead ….
Evaluations where Typhoon was selected or placed ahead of Rafale on technical grounds: Austria, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Norway, Singapore.
…. or beginner
