IIRC, the US congres asked the question several months ago, refusing a complete TOT over stealth.

Some air forces and airplanes are meant to be used in war, other air forces and airplanes are meant to fly airshow routines on sunny Saturdays. Unfortunately, half of the air forces interested in F-35 fit in the later category.

Is it a hidden criticism of the USA ? :diablo:

Potential F35 customers will not get less tech transfer than F16 customers get now and most have been happy with that. Only the UAE bitched a bit- and that was because they were paying for the development.

Even UAE hasn’t got the source code.
They have the possibility of adding objects into the different databases, that’s all.

For UK, it seems they are serious about that 😐

Using Rafales as Tankers is criminal…….. 😮

Three times more fuel than the Super Etendart 😉

I think many people are underestimating the JSF.

    couldn’t agree more.
And that many people are overestimating the Su-27 series.

I am surprised that the CDG has had so much trouble with its plant as the French are usually very competent in Nuclear engineering.

The nuclear core K19 used on the CdG has been design for submarines.
I think that 4 reactor instead of two might have been possible in a 60 000tons carrier, but obviously, the cost prevent such a solution.

Does anyone foresee any of them opting for an AESA upgrade? How does an F-5E or Mirage III with AESA sound? 😀

French aircraft aren’t famous about their internal spaces so I’m not sure it’s the best candidate. 😉

The M2000 assembly line in France will be closed and will not be reopen to produce fighters neither to Brazil nor to India.

Of course it can be reopen, as long as the tools exist.

Though I’d prefer a Gripen or a F16 to a M2000 I do agree with you that the french fighter is still a good fighter. But the Brazilian airforce isn’t looking for a fighter which is modern today but one which stays modern enough to be Brazil’s frontline fighter over the next forty years!

Therefore, the newer the fighter project the better (at least for Brazil). And, the M2000 with almost 30 years since its first flight it’s not what I would call a new project and its clearly a fighter undergoing its latest developments.

Of course, in that case, the Mirage 2000 has a real problem here ….. just like the F-16 🙂

The model’s major user the Adl’A is in the process of replacing the Mirage with the Rafale thus effectively limiting the number of potential upgrades to the older plane.

    Not until nearly two decades.
But that’s why I think a small fleet of mirage 2000 can be seen as a transition to a newer one, I think it can makes sense.

Offered at over US$ 70Mi the Mirage2000Br beside being limited, was outrageously expensive!

It’s all about what the deal include.
But 70 millions for ONE plane, it’s out of question.

The main goal of the F-X competition was to create a small core, a high tech unit capable of digesting these new technologies and weapons so that this knowledge is later passed on to the other fighter units of the FAB. Looking at it through this prism the M2000C proves to be a pointless purchase, there is less benefit in it than would be in buying additional modernized F-5Es at a much lower cost.

It seems that the problem of the FAB is to get some cheap fighters and no more than that.

Of course we know the M2000C can be upgraded but we don’t own enough planes to justify such a rework, 12 aircraft is too little to make any economic sense out of this proposal. We have a standard upgrade package with Embraer and Elbit, soon all our AMX and F-5s will share the same cockpit and avionics, as well as weapons fit with the A-29 Super Tucano. This should generate wonders in terms of logistics support and aircraft availlability. Should we integrate this upgrade package with the 12 M2000C airframes? I don’t think so! 🙁

Either Brazil don’t want more mirage 2000C and in that case it’s not an issue.
Or, perhaps the FAB will add more and more Mirage, and as you said will worth some upgrade.

Typhoon has already won, M1 unlikely to replaced or supplemented.

    LEt’s see that.
Saudi Arabia wanted to buy some LEclerc (150 of them), regardless of the reason.

So, would you find amazing that even if some typhoon are bought, the RSAF buy some Rafale ?

On what do you base this TMor and glitter? With a MoU signed, Chirac leaving empty-handed and Saudi Tornados at Warton right this moment I would have thought it is quite clear who won, but you may have sources indicating something else?

Internal politics in Saudi Arabia isn’t as calm as it looks.
For now, obviously, the typhoon is ahead of the rafale. But neither me nor you can guess what might happen in the next few years.

They were talking about the Leclerc a few years ago, but I dont think the money or the need realy exists.

For the Leclerc, the money is here unless you’ve got an electric car 🙂
The problem was the condition asked.
The need is evident, the M1 cannot be used by the Saudi army, that tank request too much logistic.

    The two main deals were:
    – Protection of the territory, for Thales, around 6billions of euros, still pending for 5 years.
    – Rafale, even Dassault is very discret about it. It seems that internal side are competiting between the EF2000 and the Rafale.

“As a European” you should know by now that European BVR exist for some decades:Aspide, Skyflash, MICA. The problem is if the Europeans could make a missile as good, reliable and economical as US can.

For the economical side, as long as Europe don’t want to waste too much money into their army, the USa can save lots of margins because of the raw number.

    No Glitterr.
SFC show the consuption of a engine per N of thrust.

YEs but the -2 is LESS POWERFUL
Il pousse moins, il pousse moins, qu’est ce que tu veux que j’y fasse ?

Now that’s true that the EJ200 is 20% more powerful, perfectly right, but it’s a bigger engine and since the SFC are even, the EJ200 consuption is logically 20% higher.

    But it can go higher.
The -2 can come close to that thrust but take a look at the MTBF and the sfc :diablo:

There were two separate groups of offset proposals the “Technical” and the “Commercial”

    Ok

    a) high possiblity of production being interrupted soon
    b) Low technical contribution to the development of brazilian Aerospace technologies and knowhow
    c) Unjustifiably high acquisition cost
    d) low export potential
    e) avionics and weapons incompatibility with current Brazilian standards implying the need for major inveastments in this re-configuration

    a) If Brazil buy or rent some, what’s the point ? As long as the mirage can be upgrade, is it a problem ?
    b) I want a link about that, Dassault/Thales have always been pretty generous for that.
    c) Is it the myth of the 70 millions ? Show me an official link from DAssault or Embraer
    d) Low export ? The mirage put to shame Gripen and Su-35
    e) Yeah, gripen and FLanker would be compatible, without a doubt.

The French Armée de l’Air had no desire to send 12 of their Mirage 2000C to Brazil they still need them since Rafale introduction was happening at a slower pace than they had intended

Then, I will learn you that the french air force is pretty happy to get ride of the Mirage 2000 of theOrange base.

The offer to Brazil of these C models was a decision of the French government against the best interests of the Adl’A brass. That’s really why their delivery schedule is so long…

Well, I don’t think these few mirages aren’t as important (BTW these mirages are RENTED, not bought).
BTW, can you show me a link which clearly state that the deliveries will be so long ?

    e) There were many technical offsets expected from the F-X deal but the Embraer HAD ABSOLUTELY NO OFF-SET at all in it’s offer.

What the hell does that mean ?
There were offsets or not ?

Once again over the reluctance of the Brazilian Air Force’s to accept the Mirage 2000BR

And do you know the reasons about that ?

    i) the second evaluation focused on the technical offsets and the Su-35 won it this time.

Even better than the Swedish one ? :p (special for Jackomino)

    k) having found no way to push the Mirage 2000 the governement opted to quit the bid and settled on the used Mirage 2000C offered government-to government against the wishes of the French Air Force

    Errrrr ..
Brazilian Air Force you mean ?

    m) Second hand F-16 from the Nederlands, Russian Su-27 and Gripens A/B were offered but the government bought the Mirage 2000C without any realistic evaluation of the other options.

    Bought ?

The Gripen A does have a datalink, but Dassault can easily fit one- the UAE E models were delivered in the ’80s with a datalink that gave the UAE a network capability that no European NATO country had- and was 20 years ago!

The 2000-9 in late 90 got a weak datalink, nothing close to the Link16 (that the mirage won’t get before 2008-2009) but the gripen enjoy a far better system than the Link16.
