Thanks for the info MarkV, much appreciated. In that case it’ll be even lovelier! As I said, no disrespect intended, I was just thinking it would look rather dashing in the red & white scheme.

Thanks Tom, interesting history on this one. Shaping up very nicely! 🙂

I don’t wish to ‘diss’ the owner’s choice of paint job, but it looks very similar to other Yak-11’s already flying. Considering this one’s history, it would be nice to see it back in the Skoda Team colours, just for something a little different.

Ah well, it’ll still be great to see her fly!

Ps. Any news on the Yak-9 restoration?

RAAFVampire- I’ve been having the same trouble. I’ve sifted through the various Sturmovic forums, and it appears that it could be a sound card compatability problem. The latest patch, 4.09m, won’t work on my machine as it has a slightly older generation soundcard. You could try running the 4.08m version of the game and see if that runs. If so, it’s possible to then transfer a file from 4.08m to 4.09m that will make 4.09m run on your machine. Complex eh?

If 4.08m works, go to the Il2 1946 folder in program files and copy the file ‘mg_snd_sse.dll’ to somewhere like Desktop. Then install 4.09m and delete the new ‘mg_snd_sse.dll’, take the old one from desktop and put it in place of the one you just deleted. Make sense? 4.09m should then run with the old 4.08m sound file.

Malta Aviation Museum’s WS774 served on 2ANS for a time, there’s a photo of her in service with the unit towards the bottom of the page on the following link.

    Hope this is of help.

I’ve just installed 4.09m, and now the game won’t run. I’m on Windows XP, and the update was installed in the usual il21946 folder in program files. When I click on the desktop icon to start the game, it comes up on Windows Task Manager as normal for a few seconds, and then disappears.

    Any ideas??

Such awful, awful news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the pilot’s family and friends, and to all at Thunder City.

According to the thread on avcom the aircraft was ZU-BEX, the silver T.5.

Good telly, it’s a shame it only went out in NI. Good job there’s iplayer! Many thanks for the heads up Paul, well worth a watch.

Avro Tudor perhaps? Certainly not Trident, they had two small clear panels in the roof above the pilot and co-pilot.

Thanks very much aerovet, that’s just the kind of thing I’ve been looking for! It makes you realise just how many have had P&W conversions.

Rather than trying to wheel out boxed in aircraft, have you thought about leaving the hangar lights switched off, and using spotlights to illuminate some of the indoor aircraft?

The RAFM at Hendon have been doing that for quite a few years already. 🙂 Couldn’t resist…

I agree with all the positive things that have been said about the show, it was a good bit of telly. It was daft perhaps, but it was daft on such a scale as to be worthwhile! I’m sure it’s hooked a few people into the hobby, and that can only be good news. The people I most admired in it all were the blokes at GateGuards, working all hours to try and satisfy fruit-loop May’s requirements! 🙂

As regards the discussion about Airfix kit age and quality etc, there are only a handful of kits that I would class as truly awful and worthy of pulling off the shelves. The fact is that kids want something relatively easy to build, and looks something like the real thing when it’s finished. Whether the rivets look too big, or the tailwheel isn’t to scale etc etc is neither here not there. They were made for the youth market, and as such they mostly do nicely.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that there are alot of modern kits out there that are just as bad as some of the worse Airfix’s, and at twice the price. Italeri’s new 1:48 Re2002 is a disaster in all areas, and Revell’s new 1:48 Mosquito B.XVI has some serious flaws (prop spinners and undercarriage). You can pay alot more and end up with something disappointing, atleast with Airfix you’re paying a fairly decent price for fairly decent quality.

I seem to remember a TV prog a few years back in which there was an interview with a former Blackburn Beverley pilot, who apparently flew several sorties in Vietnam during the war. I can’t remember now exactly why they were there, some sort of re-supply operation. Apparently the best tactic was to fly the Bev at nought feet over the jungle, must’ve been pretty hair-raising!!
