How many aircraft do Jet2 base at Edinburgh now?
3 B733QCs.
FR’s Socttish base is in Glasgow, not enough demand in Scotland for two FR bases.
FR haven’t stated they want to start a base at EDI, simply increase their number of routes from there to include mainland Europe.
Glasgow has two international airports..
Glasgow International
Glasgow PrestwickFACT!
Yeah if you believe everything FR say! ๐
Indeed..still awaiting the long promised Easyjet routes. ๐ฎ
and FR expansion etc etc…. Often the reality is different from speculation you read in the press. We can hope…
Still, good to see more expansion from Jet2 but I’m sure GSM won’t be far behind in extending their PRG route into summer now…
Saw it parked at T4 earlier, certainly wasn’t expecting to see that one!
If the routes stay as they are then I’d expect a B736, with a stop at FAO for fuel on the way to TFS like the STN route…. or maybe a B733.
It’s always been on the cards since they talked up EDI as being a future base in a document they released quite a while ago. However, this isn’t the first time they have said this, there have been near identical press releases regarding FR expansion on atleast 2 or 3 past occasions. I can’t say I’m all for it either although there is definitely room for them to start some currently unserved routes (i.e EDI-MAD, La Rochelle etc) but I wouldn’t want them to start pushing their way in and pushing other more established carriers out…
I Think MME will be lucky to get a 2nd aircraft now, otherwise the TFS frequency would be higher, not enough aircraft to go around at this rate.
Nice shots Tom, looks like you got a interesting day even by LHR standards!
When i book it the flight will be GSM101/2.
Operated by GSM then, B763, 2-3-2 with IFE but no PTVs. The B763s are getting cabin re-fits with leather seats I believe but not sure if that extends to economy, assuming that’s what class you are travelling in?
Are some of these flights not done by Zoom?
Helsink to Scotland’s Capital wasnt axed, it was always summer only and apparently a big success!! ๐
Indeed, and with Sterling off the route it was easier to work out their load factor for September from the CAA stats which was 85% so hopefully they will increase the frequency for next summer.
Let’s face it, each plane is checked routinely and it won’t fly unless 100% safe so I would have no worries going onboard it. Having said that though, 7+ hours on a narrowbody would annoy me I think.
I don’t have an issue with the safety, I agree with what you said, it’s more a reliability issue I have. These aircraft are 21 years old and are going to be doing transatlantic runs on a daily basis come next summer and GSM aren’t going to have any back up if things go wrong so I’m just hoping that they will be reliable enough, given their age…
As far as fares and convenience go, Jet2 are the people’s choice. As for comfort, experience and service the likes of BA are better, so both are better then each other in different counts.
Think you’re right, Jet2 have won this because they are willing to offer something that BA aren’t, cheap departures from local airports, and that probably means more to most people than a free sandwich…
You cant really compare Jet2 and BA. Jet2 are a low cost airline, BA are full service. Compare Jet2 against Ryanair, Easyjet, FlyGlobespan etc.
Anyways, Jet2 are probably better than BA, its hard not to be better than our rip-off โnationalโ carrier.
The award was for best European Short Haul carrier not best Loco carrier so in this context I think they can be compared, and while I think Jet2 are a great airline and I enjoyed my flight on them, I don’t think they are quite up to BA’s standards but as this is a readers survey it seems a lot of people beg to differ so well done to Jet2!
There appears to be 3 “winners” though, or is that supposed to be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd thing? Doesn’t make it very clear…
Best European Short-Haul Airline 2006

Aer Lingus
Lufthansa
More than 15,000 readers expressed their views in the annual survey and the winners were announced at a ceremony held in Cape Town, South Africa.
Have you got any clues as to where the remaining 2 may be coming from, Jethro?
Can’t say that GSM acquiring the 74th and 75th B757s built to use on daily transatlantic ops fills me with confidence…. Is this just a stop gap if they’re struggling to find decent example just now? Anyone know how reliable they have been for Excel?
Are JET2 and Globespan part of the same company ?
No.
