David, I think I may have been misunderstood here. I was trying to make the point that the cartridges MAY have been good in practical terms even though time-expired. IF there was indeed a latent defect in the pipework which resulted in the canopy jamming then even brand new cartridges would not have helped. I though it was significant because it MAY have been the direct cause of the fatality, given the fire and hydraulic failures.
I would be interested to know what sort of inspection/replacement regime applies to this kind of component – is it fit and forget for 40 years or replaced every 5 years or what?
I go back to page 114, if there was latent defect in the pipework on one side then the canopy was always destined to jam on ejection. It is a matter of conjecture whether the cartidges were any good but there was no evidence pointing to a misfire. With the benefit of total hindsight, an early landing may have been a good option with a happier outcome.
Looking at page 114, there is evidence pointing to a latent defect in the gas pipework which presumably could have been there for many years. Is this sort of thing ever pressure-tested?
alien keyboard – cool
🙂
The Royal Mail approach sounds like a cheap way of getting rid of unwanted stuff :diablo:
I’ll swap you that RPM indicator ..
nice picture of a Boozer, thanks for posting. Has anyone got a picture of one in situ on a Lancaster?
ahh canopy hatch, got it now.
thanks Peter
Lancaster Hatch
Beat me to it.
Doesn’t look right for a Lancaster top hatch, what is it really?
should say 6A/366, also fits the magnetic hand compass??
This may seem warlike as it is published by the General Staff of the Army but it is just Geography, we had (and almost certainly still have) a similar series of little books covering the whole World and published by a similar military department.
Has anyone got any? I’ve got one about Yugoslavia and it makes very dull reading. I also saw one once about the continental coast which was clearly for invasion planning – wish I’d bought it.
not totally accurate though
A ‘deactivated firearm’ is classed as an ‘imitation firearm’
I take it this offence is the one you are worried about?
