TSR.2 no competition, i know its a pipedream but…..:D 😀 😀
Considering the huge fan base this aircraft has generated over the last 40+ years why has no-one thought or attempted to build a replica of this?
I thought it was tactical strike and reconaissance 2 because the canberra was Tsr.1 and the Tsr.2 was going to be its sucessor?
Not quite, according to http://www.pprune.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-227831.html
the TSR1 was apparently the Swordfish, TSR standing for Torpedo Strike Reconnaissance!
Since the thread is Brooklands, can I take this sneaky opportunity to mention that the Brooklands aero/auto/bike jumble is on Sun 15 July 2007. Why not come along and support the museum by doing so? Andy Saunders
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I’ve just checked my diary and I’m working all day Saturday and all day Sunday 🙁
…although I’m sure I’m owed some holiday 😀
On topic, given the originally posed question from WP840, I’d be interested to see a plan from this poster as to what Brooklands ‘should’ be, as outside of time travel and allocation of cash that’s not available, I’m a bit stumped to figure out any meaningful difference. The race-course would be nice, but as it was killed in W.W.II where nostalgia was taking a back seat to more immediate needs, I’m not sure we can go to before that chance.
Of course it’s much easier to tut or winge than contribute, even on a forum. So, your vision, WP, if you please. The floor is yours.
You’ve just about said it yourself, I think the Germans should be kicked off, the race-circuit rebuilt and an extra period hanger built for the museum but unfortunately cash and physics always get in the way! :p
Correct Moggy, and when one considers what a few acres of that part of Surrey must be worth these days, then I think you’ve got a result that anything survives.
To WP840
Of course, you could always volunteer to help and that way you could improve things. A friend of mine is heavily involved there, would you like me to have a word with him on your behalf?
A.
Unfortunately living 50 miles away really does limit how much active help I can offer and with 75% of my monthly wage paying for my house that kinda limits the finacial help I can provide.
I certainly intend to visit a couple more times before the year is out and see how ‘Loch Ness’ restoration is coming along.
Can this/will this ever be sorted?
Easily sorted, just give Time Team a bell!
“Tony…!”

This provides a list of what aircraft (and numbers) are on the SAF inventory but can’t offer numbers of aircraft in operational condition;
I have often wondered why there was nothing constructed for long range strike after the Vulcan. Even after the Falklands, where a long range aircraft was needed, there was nothing except the shorter ranged Tornado.
Couldn’t a dozen Vulcans been retained and placed into storage and taken out if needed? One or two could be used for crew training.dave
With the Tornado having air to air refueling capability surely that means it has long range capability?
Hmm… I think some of my comments about ‘culling ‘ have been mentioned here. The North East Vulcan (NEAM) may end up under cover along with the Canberra……. can’t say more, cos no one tells me anything! Lets just say, that NEAM is expanding and the plans include a new, big hangar with a Vulcan in it. Never scrap an aircraft unless it has to be.
Imagine 50 yeras from now when privately owned aircraft of any complexity can be flown……. someone, somewhere will say, “Damn, I wish they kept a few Vulcans – the only ones left will be static forever…”
How many WW2 aircraft are people regularly saying this about? And this is despite many times more of each aircraft being produced due to high wartime attrition rates!
I took this one back in about the early eighties,I was on honeymoon in Jersey and it just happened the airshow was on,the Vulcan flew right over the beach.
I’ll be going to Jersey for my honeymoon in September, unfortunately it won’t be until the 23rd!
…but don’t worry am really tring to convince my better half that we need to visit that weekend too! :diablo:
Weird shape, that is for sure. Not your traditional UFO.
UFO, Unidentified Flying Object.
Picture shows an unidentified object that is flying.
It couldn’t get more traditional…
Judging by this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-70 absolutely no progress has been made!
Ladies, you continue to surprise me.. No one remembers two legends of English aerospace engineering anymore?
Sad, sad.. 😉
Whilst I accept these aircraft are side by side seating (obviously!) I was referring to strike aircraft seating not training aircraft.
Although you’ve got to admit, the Hunter is a sexy beast… 😉
