Ooerr
I have just found out on http://www.warbirdregistry.org that KF314 crashed near Boscombe Down on Feb 22nd 1982, it doesn’t say if there was any loss of life.
Thanks uksceneryman, suprisingly I seem only to be able to find 2 photos of this aircraft! 😮
ps. That’s FT375 immediatly behind KF314 in the colour pic and KF183 at the very back!
Dambusters II cast list;
Barnes Wallis, I have to agree with Colin W and cast Ian Lavender in this roll.
Guy Gibson, would have to be Sean Bean who can seemingly play characters from any military age.
Gibsons wing man, Flt Lt Hopgood I believe, could be Robson Green (possibly with Jerome Flynn as his Flt Eng Sgt Brennan?)
C in C Bomber Command, I think John Cleese could use it many acting talents to bring this character to life.
And as for the part of Nigger, I’m not too fussed as to exactly which Black Labrador they cast in this role just as long as they DON’T CHANGE HIS NAME TO ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY PC!
Sorry but I felt I had a small point to make….
Not forgetting…
I’ve managed to find loads of pictures of two of the three Harvards once based at Boscombe Down (FT375 and KF183), I can’t however remember the serial number of the third.
Can anybody help me out?
I’ve found it!
It appears that Shoreham Aerodrome holds the honour of being the oldest in the country. The following comment is from the official website,
Shoreham Aerodrome was opened in 1910, making it the longest established airport in the country. The 1934-5 terminal building with its ‘fly-in bar & restaurant’ was an immediate contemporary of Embassy Court and the De La Warr Pavilion and shares the same streamlined modernist design, preserving many original art deco features.
I was expecting somewhere like Duxford, Farnborough or perhaps Biggin Hill to be older but I guess you learn something new every day!
vultee35,
I have just viewed the Old Sarum Flying Club website and found this explanation as to the age of the site;
Old Sarum is the second oldest continuously operational aerodrome in the United Kingdom. Its aviation history goes back to 1917 when it was requisitioned from farm land for use by fighter and training aircraft.
I will now go and have a Google to see if I can find the mysterious ‘oldest aerodrome’…
New variant or type?
I guess this is a worthy point to raise. The B-52 first entered service in 1954 and has been continually upgraded to such a degree that the current models bear only structural similarities to the original.
How many mores modifications are going to be made before it becomes the B-53?
I guess the same could be said of the Spitfire, Hurricane and Bf-109s, during WWII they each underwent many significant changes yet never became known as a new aircraft.
The Lancasters that flew on the Dambusters raid in 1943 had significant changes to the aircrafts structure to carry the Upkeep bomb, the installation of the specialised release mechanism and the addition of searchlights to enable the aircraft to fly at the necessary 60 feet for successful dropping of the bomb. Yet this aircraft was still known as a Lancaster, why didn’t these changes warrent a change of aircraft model rather than simply variant?
Simple solution…
The easy way to get the secrets of Kenleys wartime past revealed is to give Tony Robinson and the Time Team a bell!
3 days over one weekend and Kenleys secret history will be secret no more.
I have seen photoshopped pictures of aircraft either parked in or flying over woodland but have had a digital camoflage pattern painted on.
A camoflage that works deceptivly well!
Why haven’t the Government (any Government) realised this and painted real aircraft that colour?
Or have they and it’s soo good I’ve missed them?
GZYL, yes RAF Tornado GR4s are getting/have got a new all grey paint scheme but it is slightly darker than the F3 grey. I think the reason for this is when flying at 500mph+ at 200ft a two-tone camo scheme just becomes irrelevant.
The shade of grey chosen has obviously been chosen as the colour closest to the many different colours seen on the ground.
FAR, my source for the subject of this thread was an article in the news section of this months Airforces Monthly magazine.
But the point I am making is about the Governments fascination with tending out military contracts to be owned and run by civilian companies. Civilian companies have to operate in such a way as to earn themselves a profit and as a result for the money being offered them have to supply limited numbers of products eg aircraft.
I know in the Army the REME have to repair certain vehicles (new Landrovers) in strict accordance with the manufacturers instructions as they are leased to the Army. In the ‘old days’ dents were banged out, parts were made the fit sometimes by bending and cutting and non standard parts used but today only certain products and techniques are allowed to be used.
I would have thought the same rules applied to the maintanence og the RAF Fireflys and the AAC Tutors….?
Spectral, the Gazelles roll is observation and reconnaissance. Air Observation Post, AOP to direct artillary fire and Airborne Forward Air Controller, ABFAC to direct ground attack aircraft, casualty evacuation, liason, command and control and communications relay.
Sens, the British Army needs both Gazelles and high performance helicopters. The Gazelles roll as an observation and reconnaissance platform is vital to ensure high performnance helicopters know where the enemy is. The Gazelle is also a valuable necessity for troops providing casevac, liason and comms relay.
SEMAE, I agree, the Government no longer thinks it needs an military force as we have been relying on America so much over the last 18 years that they seem to think they will help us out whenever necessary.
Do planes still dogfight?
I have read people comparing the manouverability of the MiG 29OVT with the F16, Gripen, Rafale, F22 and F35 but does it really matter or will they have shot each other down using AAMs from 25+ miles away?
It can only be…
Admittedly it would be quite a difficult project to undertake but finding the various components from CF-CIO-X rebuilding her and getting her flying again would be a dream come true for millions!
What do you me what is CF-DIO-X?
It is the prototype DH Chipmunk!!!
