Saving Private Ryan?????????????????????????????????????
How on earth can anybody say that SPR is historically accurate?
The beach that Captain John Miller and co landed upon on D Day had a large number of British Tommies landing on it too. When you watch the film however you see hardly any British Tommies at all. 😡
On the other hand the number of Americans you see all through the film makes me wonder if the Brits played any part in the liberation of Europe at all! 🙁

Judging by the blatant Americanising of other WW2 movies how many B17s will we be seeing flying with 617 squadren?
I think the inclusion of historically accurate names (Nigger) will play second fiddle to the aircraft if Spielbergs Private Ryan is anything to go by. Despite the British Army landing a considerable number of men on the beaches of Normandy on D Day you only get to see a handful of British Tommies wondering around.
‘Substandard’
With the incredible pace of developments in military aircraft surely an aircraft is ‘substandard’ as soon as it leaves the factory if not the drawing board?
What will determine how substandard the PAF F16s turn out to be will be the quality of the pilots sat inside them.
Put an incompitent pilot into F22 and that aircraft will perform poorly but put a fully competant, highly skilled pilot into a PAF F16 and he should be able to perform near miracles with the technology available!
My first flight was with the ATC flying out of Hurn airport, Bournmouth.
It was in a DH Chipmunk, WP840 on the 22nd June 1991 and I flew in her twice more my final flight being almost exactly 12 months later. 😀
I was bitten hard by the flying bug and the only reason I haven’t made progress towards my PPL is the old £££££££££££££££s! 🙁
You can’t have pictures of light aircraft without including one of these….
Earlier in the week a B1B did a couple of circuits of nearby Boscombe Down before heading off in a northerly direction.
Any idea why?
I’ve managed to find a few photos of Chipmunk cockpits, sorry if it offends anyone that they are not complete aircraft! 🙁
Agcat, I wasn’t planning on using a Gipsy Major engine but choosing a more economical modern engine.
Stuart G, I had seriously considered buying a complete Chipmunk (WP840?) but because of their age thought it would be far cheaper to run a new build airframe.
DHfan, I realise it would be quite a substantial undertaking to build a complete aircraft but think, in the long term, it would be very beneficial.
QldSpittey, considering the popularity of the Chipmunk would have thought copies of original design plans would have been quite easy to find?
The only thing I still don’t know about building an aircraft is the total cost!
How much?
How much of an aircraft can be replaced before the airframe has to be reregistered?
I only ask because I know WP840 has had at least one new engine and is about to have a new set of wings and I’m thinking there isn’t much left of the original airframe.
How much of the remaining fusalage would need to be replaced before she would have to be reregistered?
Or wouldn’t she ever?
I recognise that second one 😀
I simply put WP840 into Google and viewed the first 25 sites (or so) and took any decent pictures of her that I found.
Any more news on how she’s coming on?
BAe 146 N521XJ
I never realised the Americans had ever bought any BAe 146s, I thought one of the many American manufacturers would have made a similer aircraft over their side of the pond.
Although I guess it shows just how good British Aerospace aircraft are! 😀
Pity the Solway Lightning is looking so unkempt… 🙁
Earlier this year, a Chipmunk engine was passed to us. It was the one used to trial the VP propeller on the prototype Chippy. Attached to it were engine bearers and firewall. The firewall is distinctly pre production, and certainly handmade. I believe these to be the last surviving parts of CF-DIO-X!
Bruce
What’s happened to the rest of this piece of aviation history? Over the last 60 years the Chipmunk has become regarded as a classic aircraft, I would have thought that more than a few pieces of the engine would have survived.
🙁
‘sniff’ sorry but I am actually quite upset by this.
I’ve managed to find two photos of the Chipmunk prototype, CF-DIO-X!
Isn’t she beautiful….
Tu-22, what the F1-11 tried and failed (just) to be!
The Russians sure know how to build sexy planes, MIG-29, Tu-22, Su-35!
