    Bob the Builder?

    Mr Bean?

    Sooty?

    Winnie The Pooh?

These are all as believable as anybody being able to keep Sunderland in Premiership this season and Championship next season!

Although I’d only seen is designated as a T-6 I think its use against U-Boats and the Mau Mau might just enable it to be called a warbird

    Possibly. 🙂

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warbird

‘Warbird is a term used to describe vintage military aircraft.’

According to Wiki the US name for the Harvard is the T6 Texan. I was under the impression that the T meant Trainer and describing it as a ‘war’bird is a little far fetched.

I know the Hawk is used as a trainer and an air defence aircraft but the Harvard/Texan is a basic trainer and the Hawk is a much more advanced jet trainer.

Am I being pedantic by asking if a Harvard can really be described as a ‘warbird’?

    Couple of questions regarding Tornado

    1. What is the max low level speed of Tornado GR4 carying 6000kg, which I presume is the approx weight of 2 drop tanks, 2 AIM-9Ls and 2 1,000lb bombs?

    2. What is the range on a ‘lo-lo-lo’ mission?

    3. Is the max stores load 9000kg? And max take off weight 28,000kg?

    4. Why does the ECR version use more powerful engines?

    5. What other fighters have TF radar?

    6. Will the Typhoon/F-35 use the raptor pod?

    7. Does anybody have picture of the original GR1/GR4 and F3 cockpits so I can compare?

    8. Is the radar designed and built in the USA? And what other aircraft use it?

    Thanks

I would have thought the front cockpits would be identical and the rear cockpits would look very similar, the main difference being the software used in the computers would be different but the displays would look the same.

Well, there is already a standoff version basically designed that way, in the form of the Bombkapsel-90 (DWS39, derived from DWS24, derived from MW-1).

I think a bolt-on kit for MW-1 would be… well, huge. Roughly the size of a small fighter jet?
Would need an overhead wing structure (to keep the launchers free), and the necessary propulsion… probably would be around 7-8 tons gross take-off weight, depending on range requirements probably rather more than that?

Unlike the UK or Italy, Germany doesn’t have a planned out-of-service date for the Tornados yet btw. MLU planned for 80 units between 2010 and 2012, and around 40-50 will likely make it past 2020 in service (in the ECR wing and one squadron of the Recce wing, the other being replaced by Eurohawk).

What would the Germans be likely to replace Tornado with?

Will they wait and see how other nations do with F22/F35 and other 5th generation aircraft before making their choice on replacement?

    • Strengthened landing gear

      [*]Re-stressed tail hook

      [*]anti corrosion measures

      [*]movement/deletion of hardpoints

[*]confirming that avionics onboard would function in a marine environment

[*]more powerful engines providing a higher margin of safety for engine out situations

[*]and of course a catapult launch bar

    Most importantly a carrier 😀

I realised anti corrosion measures would need to be taken but hadn’t thought about the others. :o:rolleyes::p

The exisiting areestor hook is for nothing more than emergency landings using wires on land bases. in no way does itqualify the type for carrier operations.

I think this just goes to show my complete lack of knowledge on naval aviation!

How would an aircraft/the Tornado need to be modified for carrier operations?

I think Benyboy is being a little cynical, referring to Avro’s Vulcan.

The BBMF Lancaster isn’t under the remit of the CAA, AFAIK.

Note to self, must try typing more swiftly.

    Of course!

The BBMF is owned by RAF.

The CAA will never let them fly a four engined Avro bomber……

This one must have some life left on the spar then ?

Been in this one, its a nice aeroplane.

    Avro Lancaster?

I wonder if the Tornado couldn’t be hardened and used temporarily on the new UK air craft carriers that are planned just in case the F-35 isn’t ready by then.

I thought that as Tornados have always had arrestor hooks fitted they wouldn’t need to be hardened for carrier use.

What will replace the Tornado GR4 in RAF service? The Typhoon, the F-35, upgrade/SLEP of the Tornado GR4/F3 airframe, F-15E, F/A-18E or a BAe new build stealth (doubtful)?

It obviously seems that the RAF will operate just two types of fighter, the Eurofighter and F-35, to cover all roles. They will replace the Sea Harrier, Harrier, Jaguar, Tornado and Camberra.

But can the Typhoon/F-35 carry as much, as fast, as far and as low as a Tornado GR4?

Is there anything in service, or in development, that could truly replace the Tornado’s unique abilities – carrying 6 tonnes of weapons, at 900mph, at tree top height, in the night, in any weather, comfortable for crew and able to operate from rough airstrips?

My bold, I thought Tornado could only do @600mph at tree top height? Or is this only GR1 speed and the GR4 can hit 900?

Or a B-36 with a pair of Mk 17/24s. Or with a pair of 44,000lb T-12 (conventional bombs). I suppose it could have carried 6 or 7 25Mt Mk41s but I don’t recall if the service dates overlapped. I wonder how much range and speed a Bear would have carrying a bomb that wouldn’t even fit in it.

What is the heaviest bomb load ever carried by an aircraft into combat?

Excellent pictures but I have a question, what colour will the Harvard FE695 be painted, silver or yellow?
    They don’t seem too sure!

I’ve recently gotten hold of a Gameware control pad for my Vista PC which, although I’ve installed software isn’t being recognised by computer. Can anybody offer any ideas to get it working ?

    Cheers.
