I’ve heard that the Typhoons in RAF service will carry the designation Typhoon FGR4. Is this the case?
Going back a few years would a single Tornado FGR varient have served the RAF better than the two seperate F/GR varients did?
Sorry to move the topic of the thread slightly 😮
Its got to be the EE lightning for me, with a record breaking rate of climb and an awsome top speed it was a perfect interceptor. What more could you ask of it? Can anyone find a link to one of those videos that shows the lightning take off and then climb almost vertically upwards. Thanks
I was thinking this aircraft too but its main drawback was the fact it only carried two missiles. If it had been developed to carry 6-8 then maybe.
One aircraft I think might deserve a mention is the Tornado GR4. The GR1 was a truly world beating low level strike aircraft when it was launched in 1979, but as with a lot of aircraft in the 80s its systems quickly became outdated until its mid life upgrade to GR4 standard. From Wiki,
Upgrades to the more than twenty-year old aircraft included FLIR (Forward-Looking InfraRed), a wide-angle HUD (Heads-Up Display), improved cockpit displays, NVG (Night Vision Goggles) capabilities, new avionics and weapons systems, updated computer systems, and a Global Positioning System receiver. The updated weapons system allowed integration of the latest offensive weapons, for example the Storm Shadow and Brimstone missiles and reconnaissance equipment such as the RAPTOR pod. As of late 2006, the GR4 fleet is being fitted with a new 12.8-inch Multi-function display in the rear cockpit to replace the circular Combined Radar and Projected Map Display (CRPMD): The BAE Systems Tornado Advanced Radar Display Information System (TARDIS) is an Active-matrix liquid crystal display.[8] [9] TARDIS is currently being fitted to aircraft of the Fast Jet and Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit (No. 41 Squadron RAF), before being fitted to all GR4 aircraft.
Using Google I got GN-C
See fourth picture down, http://www.markstyling.com/hurricanemk1s_3.htm
Actually none are of XN503 and none of the other well-known sites seem to have a photo of this JP either – maybe not altogether surprising, as it was struck off charge in 1976 and maybe had not been in use as a training aircraft for some time before that?
Oh, bu99er!
OK, just tried XN503 in Google and the only two pages I got were this one and Clyde North Aviation Preservation Group and neither has any pictures on.
Not able to find specific pictures of those aircraft so decided to try jet provost pictures in Google and got these, might be what you’re after.

Ther’s 416 photos of the Jet Provost here, I’m pretty sure a few of them will be of XN503.

Fabulous pictures but if it can truly call itself Flying Legends where were the Chipmunks? :p
What aircraft is this? My usually adequate aircraft recognition skills are letting me down today!
XV208 was replaced in 2004 by BAe146-300 G-LUXE, the 146 prototype.
See here http://www.faam.ac.uk/
This is scandalous that Snoopy could have been replaced by an aircraft with a ‘normal’ nose! 😡
And what happened to Snoopy’s nose when they took it off XV208?
I like! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Just bought a copy [ single disc DVD ] in Somerfield £3.99 cheap as chips
I’m going to my local Somerfield in about an hour to get myself a copy too!
:D:D:D:D:D:D
This is our new 3000 sq ft building, just needs some painting, cleaning and a few other jobs to do.
What’s happening with those Landies? I’ll get rid if you want and I won’t charge a penny!
Alot of the aircraft thought of as ‘ugly’ are usually the best at their job, the A10 Thunderbolt is a prime example.
Is this true generally in aviation, the uglier something is the better it does its job?
The old British Army base in Dortmund, Napier Barracks used to be a Luftwaffe airbase used during WW2. My Dad was based there ’88-’90 with 12AD Regt RA but where can I find out more about the barracks when it was used by the Luftwaffe?
What aircraft is this and why on earth did the designers (presumably) deliberatly mount the cockpit off centre?
That is if it is off centre and I’m not going mad…!
