Shimmer in FS9
Hi Steve
I’ve now tried Anistropic filtering with application controlled, off, 2x and 4x and with aliasing on and off in the simulator. The only difference being that
4x makes it noticeably worse and with antialiasing on, the flight itself seems jerky but with it off, its nice and smooth.
Do you think I should ease back on some of the other settings a little which I tend to have to the far right? If you think this will help, what ones would you think will have the greater effect on controlling the shimmer?

Shimmer in FS9
Hi Steve
Thanks for this.
I’ve already got the anti aliasing application controlled and switched on in the simulator but I’ll try the anistropic filtering and will let you know the results.
No cricket in this weather for you mate. Got a job yet?

Hi
‘Esc’ in FSX does take a little while to take effect. An easier way may be for you to press ‘Alt’ which brings up a bar. In ‘Flights’ you’ll find ‘End Flight’. Press that and you’re out.
Any other keys you use during flying etc., you should find pretty much instant. That applies to the joystick too.
Hope it helps

FSX instability
Hi
It’s just happened again. FSX just wouldn’t open and the Logbook was empty, not only in FSX itself but deleted from the My Documents folder too!
I don’t think it’s the logbook. I think it’s the whole Pilot Records folder perhaps or something entirely different.
At least this time I was able to end the program, restart the computer, put in disc number 1 and reinstall using the repair option. Now it works just fine again and I think SP1 is also working. At any rate, it’s still in the programs list but how would you know? To be honest, I’m not sure I’ve been able to tell the difference even before this latest spot of bother.
How PC Pilot can say SP1 helps to increase performance upwards of 20 – 40%I don’t know. It still seems to me to take a hell of a long time to open! Plus, I’ve still got the same frame rates (around 20) and the bars far more left than right, so what really does it do, or perhaps I should ask; ‘what’s it done that we haven’t had before?’
I’m moanin” again I know but this could have been such a great flight simulator. I’ll probably be dead before they iron the bugs out and produce a graphics card that can allow stronger settings. But then again, I don’t want to return to using FS9. Does that make sense?
John Y
Thanks for this information guys. I’ve just reinstalled the whole lot including SP 1 and I’ll now delete the logbook after each flight. I never use it anyway.
I must admit that after the second freeze I’ve been listing a brief note of all my flights in a completely separate folder, so at least I’ve got something. I still don’t trust it so I’ll continue to ‘save’ the flights separately, perhaps in a little more detail so they include the rewards record.
Best wishes
John Y
Yes it’s good.
When Microsoft publish the next one, as they undoubtedly will, I just hope we don’t have to once again re-install the program to get back to a ‘clean’ situation!

‘Lectra
Yes, I’ve just downloaded it today and flew the Learjet from Southampton Intnl to Bristol Filton (I need the runway space as I’m still learning to control the damn thing!) and I thought there was some improvement but I can’t really put my finger on it except the whole experience seemed so much smoother.
By the way, you mentioned frame rate. I used to have it at ‘unlimited’ as recommended in an article published in FS Pilot magazine but I moved it back to 25. It was an improvement but still somewhat jerky especially when taxiing after landing, but today there was none of that and the whole thing was more like FS2004 but with the advantages! I really like the realism of having ground vehicles and road traffic, and of course the scenery even at the left biased settings I suppose we all have to use is so much more vibrant.
Sorry. Am I going on a bit?
I do so hope that they’ve cured the wobbly program a bit though so that it doesn’t refuse to open occasionally, and for me at any rate, meant that I had to reload the whole damn thing and lost all my records and rewards. It happened so much that I now no longer bother with them. I just keep a schedule of flights accomplished now.

Lago FS Enhancer
Thanks Dean & ‘Lectra. I think I’ll dump it. I wrote to Lago and have received no reply so I can’t even get a registration key. Maybe they’ve gone out of business.
Thanks anyway.
Ken, I don’t want to be unkind but you’ve started an entirely separate and different discussion which has no bearing on the subject we’ve been talking about.
You may get more success and an answer to your question about ‘Red Baron’ if you start your own thread.
Best wishes to you all, especially the ever helpful Dean. I hope the flying instructing goes well for you mate. You never know, you may enjoy it even more than the job you’re really after!

2004 enhancer
Hi Deano
Ah well, I suppose you only get what you pay for. It was supposed to be £9.99 in PC World and when they swiped it, it came up as 97p!
What I’m really after is an add-on that will give me the sort of ground traffic you get in FSX. You know the sort of thing. Vehicles running along the roads and service vehicles and cars running around the airports. It’ll give FS 2004 a lot more realism.
Any ideas?
By the way. Have you found a job yet?
Sorry to be so cheeky.
Best wishes

FSX upgrade
Now you tell me! Thanks anyway for the info, but why couldn’t Microsoft have made that clear in their home page? I don’t think it was unnatural for me (an innocent) to assume from their blurb that it was a proper up-grade of the flight program.
After all the trouble I went to getting it on and not being too short on memory I think I’ll keep it there for for the time being. It’s not doing any harm. One day it might prove useful and I certainly wouldn’t want to go through all that again!
Thanks once again to you both for your help.

FSX – SDK upgrade
Hi Blackbird 74
Thanks for this information. I’ve just completed installing it but frankly can’t yet see any benefit.
Why do Microsoft make everything so complicated? Surely they could have had SDK as part of the original disc installation. Why make it such a great mystery and, more particularly so difficult to find and then install.
Without your information Blackbird I would never have found out how to do it. For the life of me, I can’t imagine (unless you work for Microsoft) how you knew yourself!
At least it seems this will enable me to take on any future upgrades they may throw at us.
Many thanks again.

FSX vs FS9
Now here’s another thing. All you wise guys who are holding on before upgrading, and make no mistake, you will be upgrading, are very wise and don’t I wish I had held on a bit longer too!
The reason is Microsoft have launched a free up-grade download for FSX which pretty much improves everything. Unfortunately, only those with a powerful broadband connection will be able to benefit from it. It’s 90 odd MB! How do they expect us dial-up connectors to get it? Well, I did try. After two and a half boring hours and with another five or six hours to go my server decided enough was enough and cut me off!!!
I’m hoping that Microsoft will take up my suggestion that they offer it on disc but I’m not holding my breath.
I tried the real photo scenery too, and my advice would be to hold before you get those add on’s because if Just Flight is anything to go by, you have to get a download from Microsoft before that will work properly too.
Despite all this, I still prefer FSX with the traffic features making everything so busy and the more vibrant and accurate scenery. I’m glad I’ve got it. I use FS9 occasionally, usually to learn to fly a different aircraft, then I go on to FSX to brave the turbulance and enjoy a rather more realistic flying experience.
Runway visibility
Hi Dean
That really is good news – congratulations.
Don’t get a job with an airline. It means you’ll have to work for a living and you won’t have time to help people like me!
Wish you well

Seeing runways
Dean
I might have known you would come up with the answer. A million thanks mate
Best wishes. How did you get on with your test by the way?
John Y
Runway visibility
Thanks for this. I had thought of doing that but isn’t it cheating? Or does everyone do it?
What we really need is a ‘lean forward’ key, or as part of the views when pressing ‘W’.
