The pic at Finningly is exactly as I remember the Grafton Underwood tribute, I do have a black and white somewhere, no Idea where though – but it was too low by far
That does sound like the incident, I remember it was definitely the same guy the displayed the fort at Grafton, there was discussion at the time that the dispaly was far to ‘aggressive’ and low, it went beyond impressive.
Along the lines of low flying, my wifes Grandad flew Beaufighters in India late in the war and he was telling me over christmas about his ferry flight (himself and his second hand Beau) from Portreath to India. One leg was across North Africa using the coast raod as a nav aid from Libya to Eygpt, he said that this leg was flown at low level, 30-50 ft – apparantly this startles camels!!
I remember seeing Sally B being displayed at a Grafton Underwood memorial day in the 70’s or 80’s, it was silver and had no chin turret then. But as Moondance said it was incredibly low, too low. Wasn’t it displayed, then, by a guy who was later killed in, I think, a B25 – for some reason Farnboro’ rings a bell or could have been Biggin, I was only young so excuse my ignorance if I am wrong.
Of course my sympathies, sad news indeed.
I am doing a CPL up at Cranfield and was there on the 11th, did not fly as I got weathered off, but for some reason I decided that I would still go up, what a stroke of luck. I was just part through a tea when I heard a jet start, I initially thought that it was a copter given that they are close by, but not long into the start I realised that this was no copter. So a gander outside to see lots of activity around the lightning. I must admit from the time of first engine start to lining up was pretty quick. What a sight though as it powered, briefly, down Cranfields all too short runway.
I waited and watched it taxi right passed me, the brakes were still steaming, when a lightning weaves through Cessnas you realise how big these things are….thanks to the team I enjoyed the show, tremendously.
I must admit that I did not know about their lack of a campaign or ‘war’ medal. So if nothing else this programme highlighted that. I agree that there should be something, they after all were only following orders, orders sanctioned at the very top level, and living each day as if it were their last, this is pretty poor.
The show iteself was certainly watchable, I agree that putting some veterans in the air would have been very appropriate.
I for one never get tired of the totally impressive sight of fortresses in formation contrailing their way to target……
They are great paintings – favourite is Hermes, but they are all terrific.
B17 Man you certainly do keep posting some great pics.
Correct.
Anyone else want to place some eggshells down for everyone to walk on?
Settle down I say and read the original post for what it was, a bit of fun! Whether it be 2004 or 1944, the regime that this game was aimed at was one that the world could have done without, this is still the case, end of.
If anyone honestly though that it was a real suggestion that forum members should actually play this game then good luck to them.
Whilst not aviation, I think still appropriate – three of us at work have just bought ‘Escape from Colditz’ off E-bay, almost mint condition. We purchased it to play whilst we are in over christmas – just like being at school on the last day!!
Anyone tired of these yet? Not a chance
The last few shots there look like they could have been taken on a real raid, esp the last shot – terrific.
My Gixer was a whore! Still a reliable whore, didn’t need a ‘how do I get home when this Italian lady packs up’ contingency when I left the house.
Still better to be up there than down here though – one day I am sure I will have two wheels again but not at the expense of wings
I sold my Gixer and did a PPL, best thing I ever did, and I loved the bike!!
Thanks Neil, I wondered if this was the guy as Maurice asked him where his mustang was when he arrived (I had landed just before before him so I was close by when he turned up – I was not stalking).
The staggerwing is a nice aircraft too, sounds a treat.
