RE: SriLankan to Colombo from LHR

When have they been undercutting the price on the routes? Since the bombing of Columbo airport by the Tamil tigers Sri Lankan lost alot of tourism and passengers would not fly with them, they are consistently cheaper than Emirates, they even have Interline agreement on most fares as well as code sharing on certain flight’s, if you want to go to Oz for example it’s cheaper with Sri Lankan, and you can use EK flight’s on the same fare. I would prefer to go with Sri Lankan as I have a daughter and they have childminding services on there flights.

Fantastic airline to fly with, food, onboard service, friendly, and good seating arrangements.
I don’t know what that person was saying when he says there not as good. I have flown many times with Sri Lankan and with Air Lanka, Air Lanka were awful. Emirates have done a good job, but Sri Lankan hospitality is out of this world, You will enjoy the flight, trust me.

    RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner

My fav jet is the Boeing 777, I sat in the flightdeck from LHR-JFK, and I tell you what, what an aircraft, the power of the engines, the size of the flightdeck (Not cramped at all) the electronics and so on.
The only slight disappointment is that as much as the pilots fly the aircraft they don’t really FLY the aircraft, They punch in the route, speed, height and everything else and the plane can almost fly itself.
Compared when I have sat in for landing’s in a boeing 737-200 where on landing there’s no little computer telling you where you are and the route you are going to take on landing, they fly the route by VOR and compass bearing’s!!, I hope this makes sense!

But The 777, well what can I say, gracefull, big, powerfull, and I’ll tell you what the captain told me alot of stories of what boeing originally wanted to design compared to what’s built now!

RE: Singapore Airlines preparing to enter Australian domestic market

Very true, I forgot SIA own a large percentage of Virgin. That would answer alot of questions in term’s of infrastucture, routes, fares, aircraft. It’s all there ready.

RE: BA and ‘Jetiquette’…… tongue in cheek time, me thinks…

After working many years with BA I can see your point, but the points they raise are quite true, there has been many a flight I have been on when someone will start chatting to you for no reason while you are reading a book, or people listening to walkman’s pretty loud at 3am on a LHR-SIN or HKG sector when everyone is asleep or trying to relax.

But I agree with you about the food, it has got progressivly worse, especially the egg mayonaise roll on the MAN-LGW shuttles, there are only so many you can take!

With student discounts… well why should they have a discount and a unemployed person/disabled person/single parent not have a discount as well. if they get 25% discount that’s good, but there are alot of other people out there with worthy causes as well. It used to be a while ago that if you flew domestically it was pricey, but with low cost airlines and maniline carriers realising now that there is a big potential market where people do not want to go by train or drive they have reduced the fares.
I have a mortgage, child, bill’s, like every one else, why can’t I get a discount?. Students made a decision to go to uni/college for year’s knowing that it will be a hard graft and with money problem’s in between which can bring stress, but that’s life.
At the end of the day people who go to uni/college should hopefully be on a lot more money than I will be and make a better life for themselve, and I know the age old “Yes but i got student debts of XYZ”, so have alot of people, it’s called a mortgage.
I know i have probably have opened a can of worms now, and i don’t mean to some condesending, I am just putting my opinion across, needless to say someone will probably have a go at me now!

(By the way I have nothing against student’s)

    RE: Monarch

ZB is crown (Scheduled) and MON is charter. ZB is the IATA flight code which any airline needs to operates a schedule flight , i.e AMM for Air 2000 is charter and DP is scheduled. With a ZB or a DP flight code the flights can be viewed on airline CRS systems like Worldspan, Gallileo and Amadeus.
    Hope this helps

    RE: Landing on water

Most of the people died on board because they inflated there life jackets inside the aircraft and blocked the emergency door’s, that’s what panic does to you!

RE: Singapore Airlines preparing to enter Australian domestic market

They have probably got everything ready for the start. Thay have always been interested with the Australian market, big business there. Since Ansett folded (Star alliance partner) they needed a domestic carrier for there alliance and they have lost alot of business to oneworld as well as BA/QF Discovery & Outback tickets. As soon as they get a new airline set they have increased business and awareness in Oz and it also helps them within the Star Alliance for the round-the-world tickets.

    RE: I Give Up !!!

Let’s try and calm down here, we are jumping on one another, we all have our opinions on this subject which is fair. I tend to agree with softlad with this, i am not a smoker but i can see both sides of the story here. I have travelled with smokers on long haul flight’s and if you are addicted to tobacco, as some people are it can be hell not to smoke for 8 hours. On the other side of this when these people get there tickets, then boarding passes I do believe it usally states on them NO SMOKING. It is a danger on board to smoke, when people have crafty cig’s in the toilet they may think they have put the fag out in the bin, but they might not have and there is alot of paper in an aircraft toilet, hence alot of danger. Would you really want to be on aircraft at 35,000 ft over the atlantic and there is a fire on board because some twit has decided that they MUST have a cig and put everyones lives in danger for the sake of there habit, a bit selfish don’t you think. I have been on a flight to HKG and a chinese passenger lit a fag smoked it and when he finished flicked the fag onto the floor, let me stress here he did not even put it out!! That is a danger to the aircraft and passengers, the reason we have never had an accident due to smoking is because we abide by these rules rigoursly (spelt wrong i know!) Then for a magazine to tell you how to have a crafty fag is disgusting and immature, in light of recent happening’s they should be ashamed of themselves and this should be highlighted with a letter to the editor, and if softlad works for an airline he should highlight it to his manager. I think I have said enough, as my fingers are aching but i thought I should have a say for a person who has worked within the industry>

    Boeing 737-4 BA old colours
    BAC 1-11 BA old colours
    Boeing 757 BA old colours
Boeing 747-1/-2/ BA and Virgin old colours
Boeing 747-4 x 2 BA old and new colours

I think anybody who has an interest in aircraft will have at least one model somewhere!
