Mark
I have a spare origional dh84 dragon m/manual….Not wishing to sell but would swap for
origional BA Swallow series 2 manual…This is needed to complete the post restoration
paperwork package on our a/c.
Have a very tatty ,faded and grease marked copy which is not very presentable…
I have the origional Pobjoy manual and hoping you or some of the forum can help with
the airframe….A long shot but maybe one out there;;;;;
Rgds John
Thanks Mark, very interesting ,amusing and informative write-up..Rgds
Stan..got the bits you need….PM your landline no.
Check PMs rgds
Thanks Tim and agree with you re media confusion, this keeps cropping up!
The a/c was fully restored from the ground up in 1985/6 for the 50th anniv. of Aer Lingus and more recently had a major hangar visit in preparation for the 75th anniv.in 2011.
It has been kept as original as possible i.e as it would have been presented to Aer Lingus passengers in 1936 so no polished copper/brass or chromed nuts etc. just a serviceable working aeroplane.
Any changes from original were kept to a minimum and were mainly due to legislation/performance requirements,a few obvious are original DH props replaced by more efficient and slightly finer pitch Hoffmans.
Seat belts for pax. and shoulder straps for pilot.
Polyester covering on wings and controls in lieu of linen for weight saving.
Gaps between inner/outer wings at folding point taped over, gives a noticeable speed increase .(temporary measure).
Finally, Its as original as you will get!! J…..
Could it possibly be EI-ABI ?
Moggy
Yes…EI-ABI returning from Berlin Airshow…Long haul!!
Got similar but less flange..its thirties as previouly stated, and identical internally to car speedos of the day!
RPM range is correct for a Gipsy Major. One ive got is i believe Dragon, but depends on angle of drive for different installations! P/N should be on face, in pivot area of pointer..
Never heard of one, from my experience it would have a major weight problem!
In a nutshell!! Gives a softer i.e less lumpy idle, also with the further retard from the impulse mag.eliminates/reduces kick back on start!!!
As regards modern engines, well not really interested anymore, stick with the older generations!!
Historic/Vintage aircraft should not be ground run unless for a specific purpose i.e return to flying status…
They should be properly inhibited and stored in a low humidity envoirnment if at all possible..
Ground runnig of a/c in short term storage can be acceptable provided the engine is run to normal operating temperature..
Short runs can be disasterous in the long term due to build up of moisture and other contaminants which would boil off at higher temps..
As regards running an engine without a propeller or other vibration dampening device fitted..the mind boggles!!!!
Finally if you want to preserve an engine inhibit it..
If you dont care and want noise, well run away!
Re cotton/linen/polyester.
if the aircraft is going to fly use polyester..no contest…
Why?
1 weight saving
2 much less skill reqd and less likely to damage structure due over taughtening
3 availability and cost
4 who can tell the difference? unless up very close or look inside at back of a panel..
5 use the lightest spec that will meet or exceed the origional..
6 needs far less dope to finish …again weight!! WEIGHT!!
I could go on and on but for now rgds to all and hope i havent offended the purists…
