Looking forward to this tonight. Just a shame () that my Sky+HD box has packed up. So I wont be able to watch it in HD nor record it to watch it again (and again if really good). Have to wait till it comes on BBC i player.

My kind of book. Can’t wait.
Tony.
If this was West Malling, and I know it has virtaully all been re-developed, do those blast walls still exist? They look pretty hefty things to get rid off.
Tony
Well i’ve had a look and I think I’ve seen the bit you mean. Is it just after the police on the wall and there is a split screen with the police in the bottom part and the Beatles in the top part with some men dress in a white blanket thing crossing from left to right?
If this is the bit then I think what your seeing in the top left corner is a tuft of grass at the base of the wall they were standing on and the boys are playing in front of. Can’t see any ghosts i’m affraid. Nice Shack though, if only fleeting.

Theres a one at the top of my village that`s used as a shed.
Is it local to Bromley area? If so, pics please.

But in the cause of airing all opinions I would like to see what somebody who doesn’t rate the Wellum programme thinks is superior. Then, if I have seen that I can judge, if not I can make haste to see it.
Just two words – “The Book”.
I have to say, and I run the risk of being hunted down and shot at dawn, that I was a little dissapointed with the program. It didn’t have the depth that the book has. When you read it you really feel that you are in the Spitfire with him. And there were parts of the book that I was hoping was going to be in it.
Then there was the arrival of the new gate guards at Biggin earlier this year and the Spitfire representing his Spitfire, K9998, and 92 Sqdn, QJ. Geoffrey Wellum actually came and has his picture taken in front of it, but there was no mention of these details.
Having said that, and after what we’ve heard here about the low budget, I think it was well done. Perhaps I had raised my hopes too high. I read the book last year and I had it in my mind what I was going to see on the screen. But I guess they couldn’t get it all in, or the bits weren’t relevant to the overall feel of the film. The BBC has a good track record with costume dramas. It wasn’t long ago that all hell broke out when a contrail was spotted in the sky of a scene from ‘Larkrise to Candleford’.
Anyway, I dug out my copy of the book today and read a few sections in my lunch break and immediately I was there in the cockpit with him, flying the Spitfire for the first time and trying, 3 times, to land it in the dark, un-succesfully. I just didn’t get that same feeling whilst watching it.
To all that watched it last night, but have not read the book, go down to your book shop tomorrow and buy a copy. You won’t be dissapointed. I, for one, am going to read it again.
Tony.
Why haven’t we seen Spit K9998, QJ-K and I thought 92 Sqdn had ‘QJ’ as a marking?

A good programme, my only gripe, it was not long enough 🙂
That’s why I thought it was the first of a series.
Erm! A bit confused. It said that the program was going from Devon to Kent but it only got as far as Southampton and I can’t see another program next week. Sky plus doesn’t recognise it as a series either. Any ideas anyone?
I thought the program was very interesting by the way, especially when the handle from the Hurricane was dug up and given to the pilot.

Thanks for the info. I must admit there are so many things on TV at the moment about WW2 etc that I am getting a bit lost! Whenever I see anything coming up I get the old Sky box to record it but I missed this one. Looks interesting.
Perhaps someone should start a thread about WW2 progs that are coming up soon (if there isn’t one already of course) on all channels, not just BBC.
Tony
Very nice. Like the first one. 😀
Tony
That’s interesting guys, thanks. Clearly these booklets aren’t as rare as I thought they might be.
Nope. I have one too.
