According to Wikileaks the Saudis hard-pressed the U.S.A to attack Iran “right now”. Arabs seems very afraid of the growing Iranian influence in the region and the Iranian nuclear program. Apparently the Americans refused the idea based on geopolitical stability calculus.

Iran is already supporting insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, i don’t think they mind US weakening the Taliban and Al-Q in Afghanistan, except for the fact that right now all they see around them are US military bases (Saudi, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.).

That’s basically untrue. Taliban are declared enemies of the Shiite Islam mostly practiced in Iran. In addition the Iranians performed some small scales punitive actions in Afghanistan after the Soviet retreat and before the NATO intervention. There is no way the Taliban to be considered Iranian puppets to perform a proxy war.

In Iraq, the situation is different. While Iran may economically support Shiite militias they are holding them as “strategic reserve” for asymmetrical answers just in case an American attack. So, they are likely providing arms and some degree of training but on condition to put them on hold to unchain at the “right time”.

On the Iranian population, even, considering the small Arab influx with the Islam, most populations seems to have preserved the Indo-European lineage. According Cavalli-Sforza (Genes, Peoples, and Languages) there is no significant genetic difference between Persians and Europeans. Interestingly the Arabs are not the most numerous minority. The most numerous minority is constituted by the Azeri (It is a people with a Turkic origin).

In fact, they are not Arabs; they are (mostly) Persians . Anyway this doesn’t negates the Iranian influence in the region, i.e. Shiite zones in Iraq and in Lebanon.

Thanks for posting. The time line matches up with the UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11 rather than the America West Boeing 757…….

That’s insane! The Chinese are not dumb enough to launch a SLBN so near LA risking a nuclear retaliatory strike.

Another “conspiracy” explanation: It might be an undeclared American ABM test using a SLBM as target.

The order involves 32 Su-34, so the production rate will keep growing. Sorry :diablo:

It seems as a SLBM launch. So it is, likely, a Trident-II.

Here’s a speculative piece of artwork for your enjoyment.

The colored pen & pencil drawing features an operational Russian PAK FA fighter engaging Chinese J-14A’s (5th generation air superiority fighter) over Luzon Island, Republic of the Philippines, during Exercise COPE THUNDER 25-3. The hypothetical exercise engagement occurs circa 2025.
This image assumes 3 things: (1) PAK FA/T-50 will undergo few planform and camouflage changes on its march towards initial operational capability; (2) the Chinese new fighter will display a canard configuration; & (3) the re-emergence of Exercise COPE THUNDER as an international air-combat exercise. While I freely admit that few of these presumptions are a sure thing (or even likely), it is fun to speculate. Next on the drawing board, a Chinese J-10B vs. Japanese F-2A’s …
    AJT

    J-14A = MiG-I44 :confused::confused:

After the financial crisis, nobody (except maybye Russia) are going to give Argentina any major credits for arms purchases. Older second hand equipment might be a difference (it would otherways just rust away and Argentina might pay after all) like used French Mirage F1s. Argentina would have to pay cash, in hard currency. They would need modern kit in quantity to be able to take and hold the islands.

I don ‘t understand this Argentinean fixation to not buy “Made in Russia”. For a few more bucks it can buy a few less Su-35S than second hand Mirage but in the end Argentina will have a lot more fire-power. The punch of i.e. 24 Su-35S is infinitely superior to the punch of i.e. 36 second hand Mirage-2K.

Yeah, Russia is completely bankrupt. Back to T-55s and MiG-21s. . .

On a slightly more serious note, those numbers are a load of crap?

$38.8 billion defense budget for 2013? ~$15 billion lower than this year?

No; take a careful view, please. These numbers are for procurement of new material, repairing & modernization and R & D.
I just have doubts on the 2013 number. Look at the series: 16.3 billions (2010); 19.2 (2011); 24.3 (2012) and 38.8 (2013). Now compute the grow rate. 17.8% (2011); 26.5 (2012) and 59.6% !!!!???? (2013). This last number seems completely out of logic. May be is a typo and the real number is 28.8 billions for 2013. This imply a grow of 18.5%. That’s more logical.
