I don’t think so. 40N6 is from the “P” family.

    Avangard 😀 That’s great.

Gentlemen, S-300V4 is a sort of “S-300-PMU2 Favorit of the S-300V family”. That’s the good old S-300VM improved with some hardware & software taken from the S-400 system. It is like a “bridge” to S-500 system. Better radar and guidance gadgets allow to optimize the use of the already formidable 9M82M missiles from the Antey-2500.
I assume it should be better than the S-400 in term of anti-ballistic capabilities with a larger protected area and may be some improvements in other parameters.

I think the 185km ceiling correspond to the new missile 58R6 or whatever the name.

Most sources quote the 40N6 with 400 km reach and 40 km ceiling.

Hi space warrior. Nice to see someone sharing the same interest on the always mysterious soviet/Russian ABM programs.

I mostly agree with your view. I knew from the SpaceWar web that Russia invested heavily in advanced solid fuel production for “KEI-like” missiles. This may support your thesis that solid rocket motors for 53T6 Gazelle had resumed. May be 45T6 is just another iteration of the 53T6 or is the new short range interceptor for the S-500 system. I.e. a “mestizo” between the 53T6 and the 9M82.

Respect to the 40N6, Austin knows my opinion. I think the thing is just a 48N6 on steroids to launch on a near ballistic path to up to 400 km distances against large low maneuverable targets. Some comments on Russian forums stating that the 40N6 weights 2000 kg should support that hypothesis.

So, the 58R6 will probably be the missile “able to repel strikes from the space” of the S-500 system that can be used also to arm the static ABM Moscow system and with a limited ASAT capability. It certainly sounds logical.

Finally, if there is something for the upper tier, I think this will be in the development/design stage for a while. A Gorgon-like weapon makes sense for a period like the Cold War but no for the current days. Likely it will never be used and is expensive. Maybe there are plans to retrofit the Topol with an ABM payload in the same way the 60s Taran program proposed for SS-19 ICBMs. Who knows? In the end this sounds very low likely.

58R6?? I didn´t knew about this missile. What is this?
I knew from a site in Russian that the prospective A-235 system will share with S-500 some interceptor (45T6?) to perform ABM tasks.
Now what kind of missile will be allocated to each echelon?
    A very rude guess:
    Lower tier (5 km- 80 km altitude): 53T6M and/or 45T6?
    Medium tier (80 km – 200 km altitude): 45T6?
    Upper tier (> 200 km altitude): A Gorgon-like missile?

But… what will replace the Gorgon? The 40N6?

    Two comments of mine:

    – Available tanks are OK for local and regional wars. New tanks will be need just in case a large conventional against e.g. NATO or China. But the SRF is supposed to deter this.

    – The loss of skilled workers is the most acute problem. Agreed!

Agreed but I bet Yars will be superseded by the Avangard ICBM, since the later will have better penaids than the former. So Topol-M production is now closed to free resources to the Yars production but in the future a similar step will be taken to give space to Avangard.

As I already stated, the “son of Satan” will be in the RS-18 (SS-19) league. It certainly will surpass it in terms of payload but will be considerably smaller than the RS-20 (SS-18). We should expect payload around the 5 ton and not nearing 9 ton.

Smerch looks so much more badass 😎

Agreed. The new system looks as the Smerch good small brother.

Did the selfdestruction mechanism failed? It is hard to believe such an advanced drone lack this kind of dispositive.
