I would love to see an active Zaslon on a MiG-31. After all, Phazotron have already developed an AESA for the MiG-35. Imagine active radar with the Zaslon aperture. :dev2:

The creation of an accoustic barrage to throw off a hunting SSN before it can latch on to the sortieing SSBN. Problem with that is that modern passive sonar can filter out frequencies on specific bearings and ‘eliminate’ clutter from the plot.

These barrages behave like a sort of white noise (so they have “all” frequencies). There is a limit on what yoy can do (Cramer-Rao) and even the most powerfull computers-algorithms-sensor combination can’t avoid sucha limit. Algorithms can filter but the detection range is greatly downgraded and the sonar can be rendered almost useless.

Nonsense. All sorts of tactics were employed by Soviet SSBN’s to try and run SOSUS. They didnt work – Delta’s/Navaga’s were commonly tracked entering the Atlantic underneath Sov merchies etc before their SLBM’s got the range to obviate the need.

Delta-IV don’t cross the SOSUS line. They remain in bastions. As far I known Akulas and Sierras do it; and do it mostly undetected whithout problems.

Putin Says No Cuts in Defense and urges MiG to improve quality

Putin Says No Cuts in Defense12 February 2009
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that the state would not cut spending on defense contracts this year but called on fighter jet maker MiG to improve quality.

Putin, who presided over a budget-revision meeting Tuesday, said the decision to keep defense contracts “fundamentally” unchanged was final. He made the statement at a meeting with the country’s chief arms designers.

Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said recently that the federal budget allocates more than 1 trillion rubles ($28 billion) for the contracts in 2009.

Total spending this year is projected at about 9.5 trillion rubles.

Putin scolded senior MiG managers Wednesday over losses and debts at the company and urged them to improve quality, apparently referring to Algeria’s rejection of several jets last year.

The government will increase MiG’s equity capital by buying 15 billion rubles worth of shares, Putin said, without specifying when it would happen.

MiG ran up 45 billion rubles of debt and incurred losses of 11 billion rubles last year, Putin said. It spent 4.5 billion rubles servicing the debt in the last three quarters alone, he said.

“Additional difficulties with financing arose from the rejection of a portion of exported equipment,” he said, according the Cabinet’s web site. “I am sure that you must draw serious conclusions for the future regarding the quality of our products.”

Actually the production of Iskander engines is being speeded-up. Take a look of RIAN. The deployment on Kaliningrad was “frozen”, no killed. The Russians are just expecting the natural dead of the ABM site because of the parlous situation of the American budget, but Iskander are going ahead on schedule.

Time to upgrade them new engines, airframe changes and SMT upgrades. Or retire them and build more Su 27SM

I bet they will choose the “Flanker option” keeping Fulcrums in a slow dying process.:(

Consider how few years it has taken other nations to go from satellite launchers to long range missiles.

    Agree!

Not an ICBM but a very close step.

Those’s right, but no so “close” like use a MicroSoft application to change the profile of the trajectory in the onboard computer and… “OK, we have an ICBM now!!” There are some engineering problems that are quite different. Anyway I concede you that the got the capability to develop something able to put some payload on intercontinental distances.

A SLV is not an ICBM. The key here is the payload. I.e. the Argentinians tried before the 90s to develop a SLV from a MRBM of 1000 km range and 500 kg payload. Off-course the orbital payload would have been very small.

So, the true is the RuAF is going to have to make do with upgraded Flanker and Fulcrum for some time.

No so bad if Flankers are upgraded to the SM2 standard. Considering the current economical meltdonw, that is something that Russia can afford while western countries are just melting down and cuting down militar programs.:(

The Su-27SM doesn’t use anything from the Su-35BM AFAIK.

    Yeap. sorry, I mean Su-27SM2
