what ever it was have you got a photo of it?
I’ll take a stab at a Hurel-Dubois HD.321
Incorrect!
Unfortunately it arrived at 02:29 and departed at 05:38 so not only did I not get a photo but I didn’t see it either. That is one of my biggest regrets!
You will LOVE the Prentice a stunning aircraft went up in her at the flying day last year, rock solid in the air fantastic view from the aircraft as well she might not be the fastest aircraft but thats not important a great stable camera ship.
I believe that this is the same one that use to do joy flights out of Southend in the early/mid-1960’s.
Is it still a 7 seater?
Yoy can see JRB plus onother in the background of this shot of the BE2 talken at Sywell in Feb 1969.
Yes indeed – the other one is quite clearly G-AGVG which is the only one I don’t have a photo of! Nice one.
….in that case, I shall just have to help you out!
…..and very nice she looks too! Thanks for posting that.
I am guessing these are all black/red and silver? Any in colour?
Yes they are and very attractive they were too! Unfortunaely I never took colour pics in those days.
ahhhthe sadly departed ‘RB. my first Auster flight…..sigh
Thanks gooneybird!
TT
TEXANTOMCAT – glad you liked them. Just for you I have attached a close up RB plus a couple of other pics
Excuse my ignorance, but I didn’t realise Argonauts had Merlins, why were they so equipt compared to DC-4’s.
Yes indeed, the Argonaut was basically a “super” DC4 with a number of modifications including the Merlin engines, pressurisation, longer range fuel tanks etc. It was also known as the “North Star” by the Canadian operators?RCAF.
What is the reg of that Aden Airways Argonaut? – I can’t quite make it out.
VR-AAS
Does anyone know what the 747`s are like that Travelcity use on their LGW -SAN routes? Also any pictures?
Thanks 🙂
I understand that they are 300 series!
Thanks for the posting. It brings back happy memories as I spent quite a lot of time at Jersey airport from 1960 – 62 in the days of Channel Vikings/Dakotas, BEA Viscounts, Jersey Airlines Herons/Heralds, Derby Airways Dakotas/Marathons, Transair Viscounts, British Eagle Vikings/DC-6’s, Dan Air Dakotas/Freighters, Silver City Dakotas etc, etc.
I liked the one of the BM Dakota as well.
The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum have VH-UUP/G-ACUX in store
The mortal remians of Scion G-AEZF was on charge with the Southend Museum but this was just the very batterd remins of the fuseularge frame. a restoration/re-build was being under taken (photos appeard in anoth mag cant rember what one) upon the closure of the musum the aircraft moved to a garage in Southend where the restoration continued it then moved to the Thameside Aviation Museum and then on to Redhill.
I seem to remember that when it first arrived in Southend it was put in the Tradair hangar in the very early 60’s. I’m not sure what they were doing with it!
Correct, in 1966 we were waiting to fly home from Jersey when it was found that the Trumans had been omitted from the schedule, it looked as if we were on to go back on an Argonaut, which I thought was pretty amazing at the time, but my mother had remembered the Stockport aircrash and wasn’t too keen, we ended up flying home in a Herald with just 2 other passengers during a violent thunderstorm which upset her even more. Best rollercoaster ride I ever had.
Yes I remember the Stockport aircrash well, although it was a shame that you missed out on flying in an Argonaut. Those lovely Merlin engines would have been music to the ears!~
By the way, whose Herald was it?
Consul/Steve,
Yes indeed you were both correct.
She was delivered to Southend from Riddle Airlines of Miami on the 19th April, 1962 after a 21 hour flight via Gander. She was then flown to Wymeswold on the 25th April for a Check 4 by Field Aircraft Services. Unfortunately there was a huge dispute over the bill which meant she was unable to enter service that year and did not actually enter service with Channel until Easter 1963.
Also at Wymeswold on the dayt the photo was taken (sometime in the Summer of that year) was an Aden Airways Argonaut (see photo) and apart from some visiting Jet Provosts on a training exercise that was it, so pretty sparse!
Pete – Thanks for sending in the Derby Airways Dakotas. I assume by DC4’s you mean Argonauts.
