The crewless B-17 incident was in the newspapers of the time. I read it in a Times microfilm archive many years ago. Whether it is true is another matter! I’ve never found anything in various records to confirm it.
Possibly tuning base frequency for a short time every 15 minutes to listen for a recall message in the event of unexpected weather deterioration etc?

Some of the British research into nuclear weapons – the Tube Alloys project – was carried out here in North Wales as early as 1941. This is the building where it took place, one of the scientists being the notorious traitor, Klaus Fuchs. The location is within the once ultra secret Valley Works at Rhydymwyn.

I believe the Hilton car park is on the site where the airfield huts once stood. I stayed at the hotel recently and tried to compare the area with what was left in the 1970s but nothing is obvious. Oxfords were the main type flown from here.
