    Damocles is basically a targeting pod which can be used for NTISR purposes, it doesn’t record anything to my knowledge. RECO NG is a true reconassaince system with digital recorder and specialised sensors/optronics for that role.

    Interesting info on the older MAW, which is scheduled to be replaced in T2 or T3. The biggest drawback with a RF based MAW is that operating it will make you visible on virtually every RwR in the area. RF based systems can also be jammed. These may be some of the reasons why they are going with a UV or IR based system.

    The Typhoon’s MAW is an mm-wave radar system, actually three (2 in the wingroots and one in the tail). The system is capable of detection and tracking of multiple missiles and provides enough data to prioritise threats and provide manoeuvre instructions to the pilot on the HuD and possibly HMD in the future. The missiles position is presented accurately on the DASS display format and on the fused Pilot Awareness (PA) format. A passive IR based system, dubbed PIMAWS was studied and developed by Diehl BGT Defence and while it has been retrofitted on C-160 Transalls, the proposed integration on Eurofighter has been abondoned or basically never been commited to at all. There are currently no plans to replace the active MAWS on Typhoon with a passive system! The current MAWS is present since years, but software problems prevented the system from being cleared for operational use. A trials campaign was scheduled for September in Scotland, albeit I have no news on this. A software update is scheduled to solve the current problems and allow clearance for operational use. It is proposed that PIRATE may be used as forward passive MAWS in the future as well.

    Here is just a hint, the internal fuel capacity of the F-22 is ~845 lbs less than the fuel capacity of a F-15C with two external tanks. 😉

    For an aircraft which is equal in size to the F-15C, but which is almost 7t heavier the larger internal fuel load is somewhat meaningless in comparison. The F119 is certainly not optimised for cruise efficiency either. Yet I believe the 1600 nm figure is related to maximum range on internal fuel. Back in 1997 I have seen a stated 1730 nm figure for the F-22, though it was certainly an estimation.

    PIRATE is an IRST that is mounted above and on the left of the EF’s nose.

    It cannot see below the EF.

    Can it be slaved to the HEA?

    It’s actually an IRST & FLIR and yes it will be slewable by HEA (including the FLIR image presented on the HMD. The sensor is not directly over the nose check it from the front and you’ll see that the sensor provides a down view as well.

    Well there are numerous iterations of the AL-41.

    AL-41F: This engine designed throughout the 80s/90s for the MiG MFI was to be a 175 kN class engine. As we know the MiG MFI never entered service.

    AL-41F1: A further developed/redesigned version intended for the PAKFA with ~155 kN.

    AL-41F-1S: A AL-31F based engine for the Su-35 using technologies derived form the AL-41F1. Interestingly early sources stated this engine would be designated AL-41F1A, that article unveils the new designations AL-41F-1S. Albeit the change in the designation from AL-41F1 to AL-41F-1 seems not to be in accordance with previous designation philosophies. I would have expected it to be called AL-41F1S or AL-41F1-S.

    The real difference is that the f 35 HMD will receive images from the DAS sensors (IR and CCD cameras). So, it will be a full spheric field of view (including under the plane, or behind).

    Well HEA receives the images from the PIRATE and allows a look through the cockpit with the sensors FOV.

    FOV has been specified with 40° horizontal, probabley 30° vertical, but the later one isn’t confirmed.

    238 MKI or 230? Is it in addition to upgraded SU-30K? How man K did IAF have? :confused:

    The IAF received a total of 18 Su-30K which were put to storage quite a few years ago. The plan for upgrading these aircraft to MKI standard was abondoned and the India signed a deal in 2006 to receive 18 new built Su-30MKI for 270 mln USD. Those stored Su-30K were to be returned to the manufacturer (IAPO). All in all the IAF should get 280 aircraft now (140 HAL built and 140 IAPO built).

    The naming of the engines are kinda confusing sometimes. According to Defunct Humanity it’s just a different labeling for the 117S.

    Yep it actually is just a different designation. It’s somewhat like the aircraft’s T-10BM (manufscturers internal designation) and Su-35 the official designation under which the aircraft is sold.

    5,166 kg (F/A-18C) > 4,996 kg (Eurofighter Typhoon)

    But like I said. I used the data from the ONLY official source to have thusr far be given for the Eurofighter Typhoon – which credits the Eurofighter Typhoon with essentially the same fuel capcity of the F/A-18D (which is less than the F/A-18C).

    You still owe us the source for the F/A-18Cs figure. The NATOOPS flight manual states otherwise and as I figured out the fuel used by the Luftwaffe is JP-4. So convert the 4900 kg figure from JP-4 into JP-5.

    Does the Eurofighter HEA have a similar spec to the F35s. I assume the F35s is alot more advanced.

    Well if you extract the now removed NVE cameras, I see no real difference in terms of functionality between between the F-35s HMD and the HEA. Albeit the F-35s HMD seems to provide a coulored higher resolution display. These were no specs (at least not coulored presentations) for the HEA, though I don’t know if this has been changed in the meantime over all the years.

    Is it known how much the helmet weights with all that equipment? The Eurofighter’s HEA was to weight 1.9 kg and 2.3 kg with NVE equipment. The later one was recently rejected on weight grounds.

    AFAIK everything delivered before the 2nd quater of 2002 is LF1 or post-LF1

    I’m pretty certain that the 2 Rafale M onboard the CdG were F1 when it departed for the Indian Ocean and that 5 aircraft which were ferried to the CdG in 2002 were retrofitted examples.

    Still no answer on whether all of the F1s were delivered as LF1s…..

    I believe it were 6 or 7 aircraft, which delivered in LF1 configuration. Deliveries of F1 standard aircraft started in the second half of 2001. During the first deployment of the CdG 6 LF1 aircraft were onboard.

    The F3 upgrade is not just a software upgrade : that is a 2 week work per rafale with a lot of rewiring and some hardware replacement.

    I mean to remember it were 6 weeks, not just 2?

    I have red that the APG-65 was able to guide up to 2 Sparrows. Detection range was about 80 km against a fighter sized target and AMRAAMs can be used as well. Don’t know if the -73 was retrofitted, but the last examples were delivered with that radar.
