My question is what could make the Indians think that the Typhoon is as good as the Rafale for the foreseable futur ?? :confused:
Presently , the Rafale is fully “omnirole” with an alreary founded futur way beyond the RBE2-AA capability while the Typhoon is at least 5 years behind in overall capabilities in every Ops you can think of , including the AtoA warfare .
Maybe the Indians are simply not as biased As you. :-p
@Das Kardinal,
with Germany being the economically strömtest nation in Europe India may not want to miss opportunities wrt economical benefits.
You ever pay a bit more for express deliveries.;)
Now we have Rafale mail bombers, Tornado & Typhoon fast food deliverers. Something else?:D Oh I forgot about the Gripen chicken strikers, but that’s a different story.
Things like this happen, it’s not nice, especially for the other guys who have to suffer now. Don’t forget these are just humans like others!
@TMor,
that’s the max value, the practical one will certainly be lower.
@mildave
The ownership of a Company doesn’t translate into a design responsibility and not even any sort of technology transfer. Thales France is just the holder. The same is true for the F-22’s ALR-94 designed by Sanders which was swallowed by BAE Systems, but the UK company doesn’t hold any IP and the technology isn’t even transfered to the British holder.
Ahahaha! Agapanthe? I had to google that 😀 To be fair, you ‘ve mixed the scenarios of 3 different exercizes. The one with CdG was operation Medor, where the AWACs (Erieyes) were supporting the greek aircrafts actually.
Well thanks for the reminder, was some time ago. Anyway the point being that the “invincible” and “undefeatable” like claims are ridiculous, even if we exclude said exercises with the Greek. Btw. it’s stated that E-2s were supporting the exercise as well, thus it’s quite possible that the Rafales were supported by them, whereas the F-16s were supported by the Erieye, but who knows.
@mack8,
AL-41F1A was a designation previously linked to the engine we now know as the AL-41F1S aka article 117S. I suppose the 117A designation reflects that former designation, whether it was official at any point or not is beyond me.
@LMRaptor,
no that’s actually the combat radius they mistook for range. Range on internal fuel is given with 2500 – 2600 km.
I suppose you missed this part.
I missed nothing you just don’t grasp the fact that the Thales Group has swallowed a lot of companies from all across the world. That means that a lot of formerly independent companies are now under the flag of Thales. That doesn’t mean that any (now) Thales product is made in France or had French involvement. TMor explained it perfectly! Whether “merged” or “swalloed” doesn’t change the fact!
Rafale was designed from the beginning even before the present FSO became “obsolete” to integrate and sensor fuse the MICA IR.
Don’t know about this part, but the rest of your post is factually flawed, not to say incorrect. PIRATE is developed by the EurFirst consortium which originally comprised FIAR from Italy (now Selex Galileo), Pilkington-Thorn Optronics from the UK (now Thales UK) and Tecnobit from Spain. It’s not Thales France which was involved in the development of PIRATE and just for the record the IR-channel of the OSF has been designed by Sagem, not by Thales! Thales is responsible for the TV/laser module and will now work on an IR module for the OSF-NG. Those nasty little details…:dev2:
If Typhoon wins it would still be wise to incorporate Mica IR search functions into the Mirage 2K, which is one reason the upgrade costs so much. Would be nice to see ASRAAM and IRIS-T have similat integration on Typhoon.
With PIRATE being a dedicated IRST which is much more capable than an IR seeker on a missile such an integration would be redundant. I think the main reason for the MICA IR integration into the Rafale and the possible integration into the M2k is largely owed to the lack of an adequate IRST sensor. The one incorporated by the OSF is reportedly obsolete and doesn’t perform to the satisfaction of the AdA/MN. That’s the reason why you don’t see an IR channel being part of the improved OSF-IT. Though Thales appear to be working on a new IRST for the next evolution OSF-NG slatted for batch 5 Rafales.
@Deino,
almost, it’s one of the 4 Su-30M2 for the RuAF. 😉
since we’re at it, an EF-18 did “shoot” down an F-22 :diablo:
You probably mean EA-18G and btw a T-38 got a gun kill against a Raptor as well.;)

@c-seven,
T1 delivieries (148 aircraft) between June 30 2003 and July 15 2008
T2 deliveries (299* aircraft) since October 20 2008 and scheduled completion in 2013
T3A deliveries (112 aircraft) 2013 to 2015
*As Saudiarabia requested its last 24 Typhoons to be delivered to Tranche 3 spec its likely that we’ll only see some 275 T2, but 136 T3A instead.
You can calculate the average delivery rates from these numbers, it’s actually difficult to obtain exact and up to date data from all customers.
what i’m saying is that it obviously has a low RCS and that is visible fropm at least two points:
1- when facing fighters like the eurofighters it managed to get the lock abnd shoot without them being able to lock and fire back, despite the fact that the eurofighter features a more powerful radar (if its “more powerful radar repeadly can’t lock until too late, then the only explanation would be a lower RCS)
Guys like you are so focussed on the results from Solorenzera and Al Dhafra that you forget about the Greek F-16s during that Agapanthe exercise or what it was called, which defeated the Rafales (with AWACS support on the Rafale’s side I might add) when the CdG was attacked and virtually destroyed. You also forget about the F-4F nicknamed Rafale eater scoring 5 kills against the Rafale and you can bet that these were conducted BVR as well. EF-18As acting as aggressors during one TLP I’m aware off also conducted BVR shots against Rafales. To cut it short that Rafale is a defacto stealth plane claims are a myth and nothing else. Lower RCS and not THAT easy or better said early to detect yes, but invincible and undefeatable, definitely not! Makes you wonder what the outcome of the other DACTs was Lt.Col. Grandclaudon hinted at during the AFM interview and why he didn’t state the results of them.:diablo:
while the F15 has had so far (well as far as we know at least) no lost due to enemy fire.
Two F-15E were actually shot down by enemy airdefences during ODS!
The Gripen is clairly a interceptor, with secondary multirole capabilities designed to fight
Not really correct as the Gripen was from the outset designed as a multirole fighter to perform AA, AG and reconnaissance missions. That’s actually what the JAS stands for in its name Jakt, Attack, Spanning (fighter, attack, reconnaissance).
