    @Sens,
    there are 4 LRIP RBE2AA built to date and these have been delivered to Dassault and installed and tested. The AdA will use some batch 3 aircraft fitted with these radars for operational evaluation etc. I suppose it will be done at Mont-de-Marsan!?
    Tranche 4 gets this radar as standard fit and the last examples should be delivered ~2015/2016.

    there is a difference between people who are just uninformed and people who obviously try to disrupt ongoing discussions to suit their own agenda. Those people like to provoke and charge up the more attention they get from regular members. Ignoring them is the best way to deal with them.;) If no one spent attention those people will sooner or later leave, but they won’t if you feed them over and over again. I’ve learned it myself from previous events. Let the pony be the pony and just ignore it (him) and everyone else with a rightful mind should do the same.

    Maybe one of the mods takes care of this thread!? It’S a real pity that a sensible discussion is almost impossible these days without people resorting to fanboy slamming matches.:(

    The main difference is that T3A and T3B form the entire third tranche. It has been split due budgetary constrains. T3A covers about 45% of total T3, but the future of the T3B is uncertain and doesn’t look promising atm. There might be some technical differences as well, such as the Captor-E radar IF T3B is realised at all. It’s of course possible to retrofit such items into T3A and with a bit more work T2 aircraft.

    it’s not only about provisions for AESA or CFT (the latter to be introduced with T3A and for the former only T3A features full provisions). The main issue is the obsolescence of the T1 examples computer architecture and with dozens of computers flying aboard the Typhoon and T1 examples using a different software (similar in functionality to optimised to run on the old processors) such an upgrade would be quite expensive. There are also some limitations with regards to the airframe, with T2 examples introducing some structural strengthening to allow for heavy stores carriage without risking an early fatigue risk. I don’t think that this is particularly critical if roles are split properly.

    to a certain extend they are paper planes, but at least paper planes which are contracted. 😉

    If Oman would place an order they would likely get T3B examples, except the UK trades some T3A for quick delivery and replaces them with T3B. Of course there is the risk that something similar could occur as with the Saudi T2 examples. We’ll see.

    While wouldn’t call the F-35 a paper plane anymore, the core of your statement is certainly correct. It’s not known how many F-35s will be bought by the UK and as long as this isn’t secured any implication on the F-35 replacing the Typhoon as well claim is highly theoretical only. Cutting the Typhoons in place that early is hardly cost efficient and while the T1 examples might be scrapped due high upgrade costs, the same isn’t necessarily true for T2/3 examples.

    That’s of course true but you can’t cut if there is nothing left to cut. If the UK decides to entirely abandon its fast jet fleet then such a date might be realistic.

    The full report has been linked to in the Typhoon thread and I strongly recommend to read it to get a better view and understanding if the issue. Those summarized articles are largely incomplete and tend to throw a wrong light on the issue itself.

    I personally don’t think that the RAF will really retire its Typhoons in 2030, albeit this date has been repeatedly mentioned, earlier statements (reaching as far back as the 90s) indicated a service duty until 2035-2040. This is in line with the Luftwaffe’s planning for example and reflects the aircraft’s life time more accurately. No one can afford to scrap airframes that early and we all know that the development of a replacement is going to take ages and facing one delay after another. On time replacement by 2030 is subsequently extremely unlikely.

    Wrt capability enhancements much could be done faster if someone would pay for it. It’s a pain in the a$$ that they complain about the lack of capability, but aren’t willed to make decisions on time and fund them. That’s an issue which has plagued the programme throughout its entire history and I unfortunately can’t see this changing right now.

    I’m not sure how reliable that article is as a couple of claims in there are inaccurate. I wouldn’t rely on it in the first place.

    The report unveils a lot of things, albeit most aren’t exactly new many details are interesting and explain a lot of things, including the often asked “why are there no Typhoons in Afghanistan” question.

    In my opinion it’s short sighted to withdraw the T1 Typhoons from service that early and the predicted 2030 out of service date for T2 & T3A examples means that some of them won’t be in service for longer than 15 years! I’m yet sceptical on these time lines as a replacement is not even on its way!

    …share a striking similarity? The former is the AMSAR demonstrator and the image is from BAE. The latter is supposedly a RBE2AA prototype or at least passed as that.:confused:

    10kW “average” (or “mean” ? I don’t know what’s the word in english) power output. You’re comparing it to “peak” values.
    The source is A&C, in several issues.

    It’s called average yes. I just pulled that figure out of my head so it could be wrong. Though 10 kW average sounds quite high, considering that the Irbis radar has a peak power of 20 kW and an average power output of just 5 kW or the Zhuk-AE which has a stated peak power 6 kW and an average power output of some 1.5 kW. If we apply the same ratio for the RBE2AA assuming 1000 TRMs that would mean a stunning 40 kW for the RBE2AA as peak power which would translate in a TRM output of 40 W each. Considering that the UMS modules used on the CAESAR demonstrator offered a max power output of 10 W just 5 years ago that would indicate a huge jump and I somewhat wonder from where this power comes and how the RBE2AA is supposed to be possibly shorter ranged than the APG-80 with so much power.
    Just my thoughts, but something doesn’t add up here for me.

    What do you know about the “limited power output” ?
    What do you mean by “(and many other radars)” ?
    The problem here is the E-Scan system which sacrifices the raw performance of range at large angles. Isn’t it true for any E-Scan radar ? (except those which also use mechanically moveable antenna)

    Well if the RBE2AA 10 kW power output figure is true (don’t know exactly where I read it) then it is more than likely that the RBE2 had a considerably lower output which would “qualify” as limited output. Most newer fighter radars offer a peak power between 10 & 20 kW.

    That all E-scans suffer from performance degradation is true. PESA is even worse here as the transmitter loses (concerning all TWT based designs including MSA & PESA) means additional loses and antenna gain is usually lower as well. Another issue with the 2 lens system on the RBE2 is that the transmitted energy must pass two lenses before it’s being radiated meaning even more loses. The AESA solves at least these issues and if power output is increased than it’s understandable that a 50% range increase is achieved.
